Relying on Saha to put up any sort of appearances was a risk. We would have gotten lucky if he was fit enough to play a game or two at the end of the season.

Not at all, but I'm not unhappy about it.
You'll be getting a fantastic player - one of the very best forwards in the world IMO - who is pretty much excellent in all departments.
We'll be getting a shed-load of cash to spend on other players and getting rid of a player who is not motivated to play for us any more. Far better for us to have a replacement who is hungry and motivated.
It's also the case, in my view, that we'll be switching mainly to a 5-man midfield and lone striker system next season. So our need for strikers becomes less.
According to Revista de la liga, multiple times, we agreed a fee with PSG but when we faxed through, it was less than we had suggested. Sounds like something we'd do.
As for Senna, he has come out and claimed that we wanted him but SAF had been 'told' he needs to buy an English player by the Glazers. Not sure about that one, since I dont think SAF would take kindly to being told anything. He may have conversed with them and together they decided it, but whatever. I've no idea about the money side of things, but you dont go from your £4 million first choice to an £18 million second choice. So it likely has something in it.

The word is it's going to be right next door (literally), on land that adjoins the current stadium.
It was 10mil (our opening bid for carrick) for 1st choice then to about 15mil then to 2nd choice for 4mil then "back" to 1st choice for 18.6mil.

You don't need to be a Spurs fan to see that yes, he really is THAT good.
I probably watched Spurs play about 10 games last season (maybe 15, the season before that) and believe me, the Cantona comparisons are justified.
Would Robbie Keane be that lone striker? Because he isn't up to it.
See the thing is, Berbatov had an excellent season last year. Was he really that unmotivated? I don't believe you'll be signing a striker who will do anywhere close to a better job than he did.
As for the 5 man midfield... Then surely Berbatov is the perfect player to spearhead it?
He's good, yes, very good in fact. I dunno, I just don't think he's as good as people are saying (i.e as good as Bergkamp/Cantona etc). I hope I'm wrong.

I think he'd be somewhere up there with Bergkamp if he had an Henry to play with. Again, I don't think the balance is excellent with Rooney - but it would work. Just not ideally.
It does make you wonder why Spurs fans would be happy about that. Whoever they get in to replace them will be nowhere near as good a partnership, likely nowhere near as good individually even. Must just be that the clubs are paying way over the odds.
I wouldn't have said a Berbatov-type was the best sort of striker to spearhead the attack in front of a five-man midfield. He's very classy, and works well alongside a player in the Keane mould (or Rooney), but on his own I think he'd be far less effective.
What Spurs will want next year is a player in the Drogba, Adebayor, Heskey bracket. A big lump of a man who can control the ball, lay it off to the onrushing forwards and also smash them in around the penalty area without having to create too much himself.
ALot will depend on just what role rooney is playing. You wouldnt have come out with this statement the way he was playing when he 1st came to the club. If they play as a front 2 often enough i see no probs with it working...but crucially for fergie berbatov is also excellent in the lone striker role so we wont have this farcical situation where we have ronaldo stranded up front on his tod with rooney doing doggies at right wing back
A new owner might not want your finance (DIC). Or they might want to build a stadium on cheap land in Foulness. Spurs won't go for more than £200M odd unless you get top 4.
He's good but not that good and doesn't really get enough goals. Considerable upgrade on Tevez mind you.
He's a decent player. Is he worth weeks of public squabbling with Spurs until we end up paying 28m-30m though? No fecking way.
I know people will say that the money does not matter. But it does matter. There will be bugger all re-sale value in Berbatov in a few years time.
If you pay the buyout clause for Aguero say, at 40m, then you are buying someone who could have a massively increased re-sale value in a few years time.
I doubt it will be Keane. If we sign no-one it will be Bent, who is well-suited to being a lone-striker and played that way for Charlton. But I'd imagine we'll sign another striker for that role as competition/cover for Bent.
But remember that any 5-man midfield is likely to include, as attacking elements, Dos Santos on the left (who can also play as 2nd striker), Modric in CM and probably Bentley in RM, so any lone striker will be well-supplied and supported from all angles and directions.
I don't know what will happen with Keane now that his main strike partner is going - he could be sold or maybe he'll be kept to provide us with 4-4-2 options.

Well we still played with a single front player at times this year in Rooney, with others breaking from the midfield. If we got Berbatov, there will likely be European matches where Rooney is on the left and Ronaldo on the right. So we're in a similar boat, with people saying "Berbatov is the perfect target man" etc.
Yeah, I've always thought Bent was a decent player if thr team plays to his strengths. The thing is, with so many players changing, will Ramos change his two strikers as well?
Being Irish, I should like Robbie Keane, but it pisses me off mightily that he doesn't show for us at all, and on the Saturday he plays a blinder for your lot. I know he doesn't get the same service with us, but he has a shocking attitude in an Irish shirt, and if it was anyone else he would have been dropped by now.

But when you have a frontline of Berbatov, Tevez, Rooney and Ronaldo, with support from Nani, Giggs, Anderson, Park et al, you can put your bottom dollar on us scoring plenty of goals. Even more than last season (remember that? you know, when we won the double even though we had that shitty Argentinian upfront- you know, the one that scored 19 goals)
The only problems we will have is deciding which players to play in which games, oh what a dilemma to have!
Spurs tradeable shares have already reached a value of more than 200m at one point in the last 12 months - that's without any new stadium plans all signed and sealed.

27 league goals in two seasons? Unimpressive for a £27M centre forward. Man Utd could well lose Ronaldo's goals and be stuck with three 13 league goal a season men. Where would all the goals come from then?

If you spend big money on a Huntelaar or an Aguero then you've still got a great chance of getting most of your money back, or even getting more back if you sell in a couple of years.
I think anything over 20m and Spurs would be ripping us off.
Are you trying to say Tevez isn't that good? Put berbatov in the united team and he'd be a different player to the one in the spurs side. It's always the way.
Additionally, feck his re-sale value. We're not a selling club so why some thinking like we are one? He can play at a top level for 5+ years (injury permitting) no worries

Obviously we are run as a business, so we should sign a blend of young players with potential (e.g. Ronaldo, Nani, Anderson) who can help build a squad as good as Chelsea's, without needing to match their mentalist spending. Then you combine these "potential greats" with a nucleus of world-class stars who you will hope to hold onto until their best years are over, irrespective of their re-sale value (e.g. Ferdinand, Neville, Evra, Vidic and, oh yes, Berbatov)
I know it's a harsh insult but I can't help thinking that people who obsess about re-sale value (especially looking to make a profit on a 40m transfer!) must be spending a wee bit too much time playing a certain computer-based football manager simulation
Berbatov and Aguero are completely different players as well. The whole point is gaining some variation in our forward line.
I guess my view is that the ideal was a player with more pace, power and finish to complement Rooney. That said Berbatov is a very good player and will make you a good deal better.
