Do you think there will be a Deal or No Deal?

Ok, fine, it is Brexit.

In which case feck you Brexit even more cause it's impacting our veg too and I got terrible tomatoes in my shopping this morning.

Feeling a bit North Korea this, no-one else with problems in the EU but our press ignoring that and giving us the official message from the government instead.

Should we form some sort of circle that sends care packages to our fellow posters most in need? I thought no toiletpaper was bad but no vegs isn't sustainable.

Jokes aside: How bad is this really? Has anyone tried getting basics and failed for multiple days?

This one is really interesting because the disinformation is a bit more subtle than usual. There was bad weather which has affected crops, there was also a lack of workers which has also affected recolts but it's not a current issue and doesn't concern fresh products(it will likely be an issue this spring/summer). There are products that should be missing or that have seen a price increase but not fresh products, it's largely transformed ones, an example is mustard.

So they are kind of lying about something that is kind of true while also totally overlooking that brexit puts the UK at the end of the supply chain because it's more expensive for haulers to supply the UK.

We did offer many moons ago but of course they wouldn't be able to cope with the red tape clearing through customs plus all the transport costs and duties inflicted by the UK government on their own citizens.

Of course it's largely due to Brexit. We have no shortages of anything in Italy, we have loads of different varieties of tomatoes too. If it was all about the weather, we'd have shortages here, wouldn't we?

That post about Dutch tomatoes tells a tale - there's no value in driving to the UK from the Netherlands now, it takes too long because of all the regulations.

Oh yes, I agree completely. Our press is just ignoring all of that so there will be a load of people in the UK who don't know that's the case.

We have been told repeteadly on this very forum that you have to be super careful not to offend Brexiteers (as they're actually the most fragile snowflakes on the planet), because otherwise they'll never change their minds and become more (?) entrenched. So what we have instead is blatant lying and embarrassing propagandist slogans monopolising mainstream media, purposefully and sometimes explicitly hiding the biggest factor in millions of households losing quality of life if not outright falling into poverty. But that's all right I guess, as long as no one says or writes that they think that perhaps a few of those who voted for Brexit maybe, who knows, maybe not, weren't the most tolerant, sensible and brightest members of society. I apologise for the language used and truly think Brexiteers are a lovely bunch, I was just describing how others may (unfairly) see them.

No peppers or cucumbers over here last week.

Let’s face it, the people who want the weather excuse are the people who watch these news channels. None of them are going to check twitter to see if it’s actually true.

Spain and Morocco are a lot closer to France than Ireland.

anyway, clearly you have a weird obsession with this and refuse to accept it’s due to anything but brexit so I’ll leave you at it.

What @Paul the Wolf ... having a weird obsession in relation to Brexit... No can't be so, you must be mistaken, he hardly ever mentions Brexit (;))

Alright that's serious enough to be pissed off about. Thanks for the answer!

I have no clue how much pepper is here (can't eat it) but cucumbers are way more expensive here too. Maybe not quite 2€ but at least1.5€. I had it down to inflation before hearing about this from the UK though. Does make sense if potential importers ordered less if they calculated the consumer price to hit 2.5 £

Of course Paul, how can it be any different, we all know everything going wrong is down to Brexit... you have told
us so often! :nono: ..;)

Part of what's going wrong with the UK is down to incompetent politicians across both main parties, an out-of-date parliamentary system, pigs at the trough and on top of it a suicidal Brexit. Don't know what it will take for the electorate to wake up.

The UK are a great country but Brexit is one of the dumbest policy of the last century.

OK Paul, so if I've read your post right, things going wrong with UK are;
a) incompetent politicians
b) out of date parliamentary system
c) 'pigs at the trough'
and (drum roll please.. da.. dah!)
d) a suicidal Brexit (incidentally was their any other type of Brexit option??)

So really Brexit is only a quarter of our problems?... best stay in France Paul, live the good life don't worry about us, we will muddle through. :)

I didn't say each was 25% . The other option was not to leave. Even the most racist, xenophobic, nationalistic numbskulls will not get what they expected to get with Brexit - unless the UK up anchor, have no contact with the outside world and are self-sufficient.

The problem is that things will get worse and the government will double down. Although it does not affect the rest of the world as much it does the UK , it is a problem having a nutcase country just over the water.

Don't worry, I have no intention of ever returning.

Eating turnips will help ease the shortages of fruit and vegetables hitting supermarkets across the UK, the environment secretary suggested in the Commons today.
Therese Coffey was questioned by MPs in Parliament today about fruit and vegetable shortages in the UK.
During the session, MP for North Devon Selaine Saxby suggested seasonal eating would solve the shortage of tomatoes and other fruit and vegetables.
Ms Coffey replied: “It’s important to make sure that we cherish the specialisms that we have in this country.
“A lot of people would be eating turnips right now rather than thinking necessarily about aspects of lettuce, and tomatoes and similar but I’m conscious that consumers want a year-round choice and that is what our supermarkets, food producers and growers around the world try to satisfy.”

you’re all going to dine on scurvy etc from that great mix of fruit and veg in your new diets.
Turnip soup instead of tomato soup, past sauce made from turnip, a lovely stuffed/toasted turnip, turnip on crusty bread, turnip & cheese, mmm all yummy alternatives. Just change your mindsets and think 1940s you spoilt lot!
oh wait, don’t grow enough turnips??

I loathe turnips. So I would have to starve.

I'm still in the hope that at some point the people will say, "Alright, enough of the gaslighting and the lies. It's beyond a joke now."

But no, they believe it because they want to believe it. "Please lie to me some more!"

No Paul I didn't think for a moment you would.... but perhaps just for a visit, e.g. to OT when United lift the PL title again (not saying when, but keep your passport* up to date)
*That's the new Blue UK one... of course by that time HM Government might not be letting even Ex Pats back :(

You forgot 'Battered' Turnip with chips, (if we have some potatoes) of course 'deep fried' turnip up in Scotland.

The obvious Scottish one would have been "haggis, neeps and tatties". Preferably battered.
