Brexited | the worst threads live the longest

Do you think there will be a Deal or No Deal?

There is a british guy who lives near me, I think I've mentioned him in this thread before. He voted brexit, he had a british flag on his balcony for a bit, he lost his business because of brexit, which was related with importing products (he has a lot of cash though so no biggie I guess) and has gradually been growing apart from his daughters because of politics.

Does he regret any of it? Well, he was in the cafe this morning going on about how brexit is great, but with a new reason for it now. The british will suffer financially but that's good because it will create more resilient people and a stronger generation. British people are too spoiled these days.

This moron spends his days in the cafe, the park or at the beach, has a great life in a sunny country and doesn't give two fecks about people struggling back home. Some people are beyond saving.

If he was American he'd be a diehard Trumpite, there's a similar mentality in what they think

He kind of has a point. If they have it too easy they'll most likely end up like him. A cnut.

The story is based on what Starmer said yesterday about wanting a “better Brexit deal” as he said Labour would respond to calls from British car manufacturers for the government to negotiate changes to the “rules of origin” provisions in the Brexit deal that could lead to British exports facing prohibitive tariffs next year. Starmer has not raised this particular issue before, but what he said was in line with his long-standing commitment to negotiate changes that would make the Brexit agreement function more smoothly. (To the dismay of pro-Europeans, he has ruled out a substantial renegotiation, such as taking the UK back into the single market or the customs union.)

This morning Jim McMahon , the shadow environment secretary, insisted that Starmer was not proposing a wholesale renegotiation.

Asked on Sky News whether Starmer’s comment meant he would “start again” with talks and abandon the current deal, McMahon replied:

McMahon said Labour would seek to “reduce red tape and allow us to trade on a competitive basis”, for example, but a return to free movement “isn’t on the table”.

This pretty much confirms what I knew about Starmer from day one back in 2016.

He doesn't understand the EU, he doesn't understand international trade and doesn't understand Brexit.

Which "Brexit Deal" is he going to renegotiate? The Withdrawal Agreement is not being re-opened. The trade deal is up for minor renegotiation in 2026.

The Uk (apart from NI) is in a different Custom's Area, you plonker, there has to be borders and checks. Why should the EU let you be more competitive? You are now a competitor. Before you were a trading partner on the same side.

Wake up you moronic idiot!

You cannot get elected in this country without getting the votes of brainwashed idiots. These idiots vote based on soundbites and slogans.

The problems are complex and the fixes are decades long. It is nigh on impossible to win an election in this country if you only arm yourself with the truth. I honestly can’t understand anyone that thinks Labour could get elected on a platform of a return to the single market and/or customs Union. Stating that would see defeat.

There is close to zero percent value in criticising a non-governing party. The entire country wants and needs (whether idiots understand or not) a party that improves every single thing in this country. Yet enough people will still vote for a party that’s worried about 16 people in a dinghy.

If the left (aka functioning adults) could just spend 100% of their time criticising the actual government 100% of the time, we’d be fine.

We are governed by early stage facists. Let’s vote them out. Then criticise the new government when we get one. ‘What would Starmer do’ is so irrelevant right now. Get him and his party to a place where we can criticise and influence what he’s ACTUALLY doing and our complaints and critique has merit. Anything less than that enables the Tories.

I think you've already progressed from early stage fascists. If I was voting for someone I wouldn't be voting for them in the faint hope that they were lying (what an endorsement) and would actually do something sensible.

Yes the Tories need removing but what does the future look like? Everything Starmer's saying now is a load of rubbish.

If he gets voted in at the next GE, trying to please everyone and no-one is not going to work. Either he's going to double down on his 'please the Brexiters' stance in the hope that he stays in power at the 2029 GE or he's going to change tack and move closer to the EU again which the RW press will have a field day. He hasn't got the credibility or character or knowledge to be strong enough for that.

Then in 2029 you'll have another Tory government for x number of years and Starmer will be an insignificant footnote in history.

Since 2019 Labour should have found a strong Pro-EU leader with character, knowledge and conviction. People say the political mood wasn't right.

Five years to bring the country round with you. Not to rejoin immediately but to tell people why Brexit is so bad for the country and start to be closer again. Not to say Brexit is done but I can do it better. There is only one Brexit.

Instead it means that just over one year away from the next GE, the leader of the opposition is too scared to oppose the Tories and hoping to be better at being crap than the Tories. There has to be someone, somewhere who's got a backbone and the courage of their convictions. It's too late for 2024.

Under no set of circumstances could you have started 5 years ago with a pro EU stance and be where Starmer is now. ie About to be the next PM.

I think you’re blinkered if you think he’s in this position through sheer accident. He’s dismantled the Tories piece by piece. You seem to give the party no credit for their role in getting to the position that they’re in. I do.

We have opposing views. It’s cool.

I believe that 8+ years of labour will see;

- Stronger Unions
- Weaker landlords
- Closer EU ties
- Weakened/Higher taxed large private enterprise
- Higher pay for public sector workers
- Better standards of living for the majority
- Huge changes to higher education costs
- Changes to the voting system to see people better represented.

It takes half the time to dimsmantle, vandalise and destroy something, as it does to repair and rebuild. That’s the game.

All that… just gets us back to the position that we already were in. We need decades of Labour government to get anywhere near this idyllic Corbynist existence. Nothing is getting nationalised inside a decade.

Vote them in. Ask for better. I’m over the child like fantasy that he just run on a ticket of Socialist principles. That’s gone. We had a chance. We fecked it. The pendulum is not swinging from where it is right now, all the way back there.

To be clear - I adore Corbyn. The man, his manner, his politics and attitude. Im fortunate (if you can use that word) enough to have spent small pockets of time with him, Starmer, Streetinf, Abbot, et Al. Through my profession, I’ve also spent time in rooms with Kwarteng, Hunt, and a few other Tory gobshites. The latter talks about the country as chess pieces used to win a game for businesses. The former talk about people and living standards. There are no comparisons. None. Any time Starmer puts a single toe on the line of anything that appears ‘centrist’… we on the left (and I am Socialist/Communist Left) lose our collective minds and lump him in with people that giggle over deporting half-drowned people to Rwanda.

It’s getting to the point I find hysterical Starmer/Labour opposition as repulsive. It’s akin to the one-child policy seeing female babies getting aborted. ‘feck this created life. I want my specifically desired version of something’. It’s gross and juvenile.

I want monumental taxes on the rich, corporations and extra-ordinary profits. I want public utilities nationalised. I want equity and equality for the majority. I don’t believe in Billionaires. I want money out of politics. I don’t want MP’s to ever have second jobs. I’d abolish Westminster and have a digital version of it that saw MP’s live and work in their constituency. I want a four day week. Paternity pay that matches Maternity pay. I want to be able to travel overseas and people be envious of my baseline.

All of that… no longer available in my lifetime. And I blame misty eyed idealists for seeking Nirvana in the length of a TikTok video.

The cnut’s on the right have spent 20 years getting back into power, taking it, exploring and then exploiting it. Yet we all want a manifesto that cures everything. Again, we had that option. We fecked it. It’s gone.

All that not really an attack on you of your beliefs. We don’t agree. But I truly don’t believe your version of what should happen, is available right now.

I appreciate what you're saying - but my views are neither right, left or whatever.

Straight after 2019 he couldn't come out and say no we should be close with the EU. It had to be a gradual process. But we're four years from there and he's still not offering anything to anyone who doesn't believe the rubbish in the Mail, Express or Sun.

The Tories may have done badly in the local elections because people are fed up with everything. Come the GE next year I wouldn't be so sure Starmer even gets in. He's got to offer something. Saying I can do it better than the Tories doing the same thing isn't good enough. But he may get one term of five years.

The main problem and Brexit is the only thing I'm concentrating on which will be the biggest factor affecting the UK going foward. It's clear he doesn't understand the implications and consequences of Brexit. There's another four years of things to come that are going to make it worse.

So in the middle of his term, if he's elected - full Brexit, the only Brexit, not his version of Brexit, not the one he thinks he can change or make work will hit him right between the eyes. He won't make it to another term.

The idea that he doesn’t understand more about Brexit, it’s impacts and countrywide limitations, than you and I… is insane. He does. You surely must believe that if you gave him a Thanos snap to undo it and revert to the countries global standing as of 2014, he’s clicking immediately.

You seem to think there are enough people that would vote Labour if he’d made that a private goal in 2019, and a declared goal in 2022 ahead of the the next election. There are not. Not even close. This country is full of Turkeys that wave flags in appreciation of Christmas.

You don’t live here (I don’t think). If the next Tory party is elected this side of 2032, I won’t either. This country is absolutely fecked. I loved what it was, but detest what it currently is. I’m gone at the next sign of danger. One more spin of the wheel is all I’ve got. I’m 40, well paid, and sick of it all. From such a low starting point, every year should get better than the last, for at least a decade.

One more roll of the dice is all I’ve got left and I’m fairly fecking desperate for every single person that hates how life looks, to vote against the Tories. Despite my essays in response every now and again, I don’t have any time for anyone on the left that’s standing in the way of that. It’s dull and reductive. We don’t need to waste energy in what a Labour leader isn’t doing. The facists ARE doing shit. Get them gone.

It just made me feel sad.

Oh come on. Those bench sitters (both couples) were hilarious. Making a point about foreigners coming and taking all their hard earned tax money, then pointing out the streets were never cleaned any more. And the reporter stuck the knife in further asking "why do you think the streets are less clean since Brexit?"

The squirm was delicious.

Because spanners like that have feck'd this country up big style. The whole idea that this isn't the Brexit that I voted for is crazy. Brexit was a binary vote, Leave or Remain. Leaving meant that we trusted the Tories to drive the bus with the hand break off and this is the car crash we ended up with.

Also if I remember correctly for a long while the ones that weren't in favor of no deal championed a "norwegian deal" until they were told what it was and that idea disappeared.

Just because he's a politician who used to be a lawyer doesn't mean he knows what he's doing on every subject. I don't claim to know about everything about every subject either. But having listened to him since even before the referendum I know what he doesn't know . It's not a guess. I absolutely know he doesn't understand about international trade, customs unions, etc and the various other side issues associated with it. 100%.

Maybe he would want to go back to 2014 and undo it but he has no idea how.

I haven't lived in the UK since 2007. Yes you need to get rid of the Tories, yes you have a country of brainwashed turkeys. Are they going to all change if Starmer gets one term in office. He'll get the blame for what goes wrong during his time in office and you're back to square one because the UK will always vote Tory by default - unless Labour can produce an exceptional leader of substance.

They were so many things that could make you laugh and cry at the same time. The one that stuck in my mind was the short haired woman- sunglasses , grey hair and teeth who said we can't take all the refugees, other countries should take some too. Ultra brainwashing.

 You have to talk to them like children as well to lead their brains into joining the dots and creating a thought that wasn't imprinted on to them by The Daily Mail. Fascinating to watch. "They're all the same" is something I hear quite a lot from that generation. Usually in response to you criticising something they voted for. It's a natural defence mechanism even though there is some truth in it. Deep down I think some of them know full well they've been had. If it's enough to put them off voting then I'll take that as a win.

Also if I remember correctly for a long while the ones that weren't in favor of no deal championed a "norwegian deal" until they were told what it was and that idea disappeared.
Once we had left I would have loved a Norwegian deal. Any deal that kept close ties with the EU. The idea that the EU is punishing us by treating us like a 3rd country when we are no longer part of the Union is just tragic. It's what we told them to do.

The problem with rejoining isn't only that it is a painful process of application that could take from years to decades to complete and that can be vetoed by any member. Also, there's an incentive for the EU to make any UK potential application as difficult as possible in order to show the consequences of leaving and to discourage countries sitting on the fence. That's why it's extremely unlikely to think of a rejoin scenario anytime soon.

Nevertheless, it seems it's in the UK best interests to try to slowly align as much as possible with the EU current practices and procedures, in order to make a soft "Brentry" until the point that rejoining seems the obvious next step. Unfortunately that's difficult to accomplish if most of the country is still divided between "Brexit is great" and "Let's make Brexit work".

I didn’t say on every subject. I said Brexit.

I also can’t control what the idiots in this country consume, swallow and vote for.

But if we as a country decimate them at the polls, leaving them with a 20% minority vote in the richest and most racist areas… leaving a strong Lib Dem cohort and a twice larger Labour voting block… we can see change.

If I were a Labour guiding political voice, I’d promise Scotland a referendum in 2035. Their votes are lost. Ask them for a decade of support in exchange for a referendum. That country wants - and absolutely needs - some skin in the game.

The country/nation is on its knees. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to marginalise the Tories to a group of facists and free market fundamentalists. Let them share that tent.

Let this win be so crushing that the Tories become an Orbanesque bonfire of a party. It’s available.

But everyone left of them needs to vote. For ANYONE else. That’s how we give rise to a Socialist left, a Corbyn led party that wins 5-10 votes next turn. A Green Party that contests and wins 5 seats. A coalition of absolute left wing chaos that sees the facists and racists age out of existence.

Not voting for Labour, Stops that. All of it.

Yes but that's where I don't like Starmer. It's an open goal, there will never be a better time. Offer something to the Scots, offer something to the people who know Brexit can never possibly work. Give people hope. That's what I meant where there are millions and millions of people totally unrepresented. He's got probably less than a year to come up with something that doesn't treat people the same as the Tories, ie like brainless idiots. He's chasing after one group of voters and ignoring the others.

I agree with the sentiment. But I don’t think he can do that now, within lived reality.

Promises and change need to be offered when the horse can see the stable and starts galloping.

In the meanwhile? Every single person to the left of the Tories (read : functioning, intelligent adults) needs to just criticise the Tories and ensure that everybody they know and love, votes against them. Shouting ‘Nationalise everything we own’ into the abyss… helps the facists.

Once in a lifetime vote. They can stop the votes. We can galvanise people to vote.

If Starmer becomes a corporate puppet I will be vocal online and in reality. I will protest and do all I can to vilify, criticise, hold the recently won ground and ensure we don’t slide centrist. But we have to actually win. Nothing matters before then.

Scotland is so simple to get support for right now it's unreal.

'I can't offer you independence but I can offer you a Westminster government that will try not to treat you like crap. We'll also not feck up your public services as much as the SNP have, and when we make mistakes we won't just wave a shiny Saltire in front of you and scream "freeeeedoomm" like those dipshits Salmons and Sturgeon did.'

There. Done.

We'll also not feck up your public services as much as the SNP have, and when we make mistakes we won't just wave a shiny Saltire in front of you and scream "freeeeedoomm" like those dipshits Salmons and Sturgeon did.'

There. Done.

Your first ministers sound fishy

Such an elonesque pause. The sign of a genius mind, if not a particularly quick-witted one.

Jim McMahon. Labour's shadow environment secretary on Sky News.

The first 2m45s is about Brexit.

You can laugh and cry about the Brexiters in Clacton who have been brainwashed and will never change.

This is far more depressing. This is what part of the country will be hoping for and to get the Tories out of power for this.

A few gems - shouldn't need going over yet again and again and again and again and again and explaining but...
Quotes:
We can remove barriers to trade

It was for the government to make sure that Brexit could be made to work.
Britain hasn't made the progress it should have made and we want to make brexit work for working people.

He (Starmer) says the agreement is a framework and a starting point.

Veterinary agreements - the reason why farmers in Northern Ireland struggle to trade with Great Britain is because the veterinary agreement isn't in place

Businesses want simplicity and for that red tape to be taken away.

Jesus wept.

Brexit has been a catastrophically stupid act of self harm (I described it as such in front of the BBC Look North cameras the day after the referendum in 2016 and that opinion has only intensified over time), and has resulted in us imposing completely unncecessary economic sanctions on ourselves.

However, I fully understand why Labour cannot say that at this moment in time, pledge for England, Scotland and Wales to rejoin the single market, talking about rejoining the EU etc.
That will basically be an electoral gift (or at least welcome respite) for the Tories, and will result in Brexit once again being a major issue at the next GE, which would terrible for Labour.
When general (or Scottish) elections are heavily dominated by 'emotive', divisive constitutional issues, namely Brexit and Scottish independence, Labour are well and truly f*cked, as highlighted by the 60 seats they lost in Northern England, the Midlands and Wales, and 40 seats that they lost in Scotland.

The second largest party in Westminster, that wants to become the largest party and enter government, has to 'play politics' and think strategically - there's no way around that. It's significantly easier for smaller parties that have absolutely no prospect of forming / leading Westminster governments, and includes the SNP MPs in Westminster who are separate the the governing MSPs in Hoylrood, to 'remain' pure, because ultimately there's a strong chance that without holding the levers of power they will never be judged against their comments.

It's like when people say that Caroline Lucas is the 'voice of reason' in Westminster. While I have a lot of respect for her (apart from when during the Brexit chaos in 2019 she said that a cabinet only consisting of white women was required), and think that she is excellent at succintly highlighting where the government are failing, ultimately she has one of the easiest jobs out of any MP in parliament. As she will always remain an opposition MP, that will never even be part of a confidence and supply deal, let alone a coalition, let alone being a government minister with responsibility over a departmental budget, she can say exactly what she wants, promise and pledge exactly what she wants, without ever having to worry about being held to account for delivering those promises, balancing costs, her record being judged etc. It's also of course far easier for politicians to cultivate and maintain a loyal fanbase if they never enter, or especially never come close to entering, government. If the Tories had won a majority in 2010, Clegg would have remained incredibly popular for at least quite a while longer.

The problem with Starmer is that he has learnt absolutely nothing since he was appointed by Corbyn in September 2016 as shadow Brexit whatever.

A rough timetable of Labour's position on Brexit;
Corbyn (anti-EU and let's not pretend otherwise) makes half-hearted speeches with Thornberry in tow before the referendum.
Corbyn appoints Starmer (inexperienced wet behind the ears)
Corbyn says Starmer had a season-ticket to Brussels - Barnier mentions one meeting with Starmer.

Corbyn and Starmer rush to trigger Article 50 with the Tories despite no plan behind put forward.
Lots of abstaining, loads of incoherent rubbish about Swiss deals and so forth, in out shake it all about where not one single person in the HoC had the first idea of what was to come and what Brexit actually meant.

Deadline is extended past the two years to get the deal over the line. Bearing in mind that the EU were throughly sick of the Uk's approach and the time wasting.
Johnson finally agrees to something which MPs's voted for and accepted.

Labour propose some kind of unspecified referendum if they get in and renegotiate the deal if they get in. This is probably one of the more laughable suggestions. the Eu were really in need of another session of renegotiating unicorns and cake.
British people and the EU are throughly sick of the whole thing. They vote for Johnson hoping that would be the end of it. Unfortunately for them it is only the start.

Starmer sets his 6 tests, Starmer wants the same benefits, inside and outside of the EU. He gets his chinese takeaway menu out to decide which unicorn he would like.

To cut out all the bits in between, Starmer still doesn't understand about the EU, he doesn't understand about Custom's Unions, he doesn't understand about the Single Market and doesn't understand what the implications of Brexit are.

The Starmer you see today is still the same wet behind the ears naïve innocent whom Corbyn appointed 7 years ago. He's still got his takeaway menu in his hand and still thinks he can have the same benefits in and out of the EU.
He even got hoodwinked by the DUP regarding the ability of NI to trade with GB. He still believes it.
He thinks he's going to be able to reopen negotiations with the EU.

How can anyone be this out of touch?

The other point still being missed is. No it's obvious the UK cannot rejoin the CU or the SM or the EU for many years to come and that's if the EU ever let them back in.

The first step towards that though is to stop pulling further away.
That means what is Starmer doing about the Freeports (disastrous move for the UK - probably lose even more access to the SM and possibly the trade agreement) leaving the ECHR/Rwanda policy (ditto); Bonfire of EU regulations (ditto).

Then he's going to rely on people being highly trained and highly paid in the skills sector to cover the jobs that are no longer being done by the EU workers who the Uk have told they're not welcome.
So when he's trained the highly skilled cleaners, waiters, fruit pickers, and all the other menial jobs the British don't want to do and paying them £100k per year. - what's his next brilliant idea after the manufacturing industry in the UK has completely collapsed? If only he had some kind of vision.

Do you enjoy making things up about people that you don’t know? All of that is invention and fantasy.
