I fail to see what Lahm provides in midfield that others couldn't give us... after over a year of this. I just can't see it.
Absolutely nothing. Said it in the summer. Low learned the hard way when Ghana exploited him for both their goals. The game after against us, he was at right back where he stayed the rest of the tournament. They're trying to be too clever, for whatever reason.

Only 6 days until the return leg, I doubt we'll get any of our injured players back until then. So we basically have to start the same team again on Tuesday :nervous:

Unfortunately we can't start the same team again. Danilo and Alex Sandro out. We have no backup LB so Indi will have to play on the left and replaced by Marcano in the center. At RB will be a former winger Ricardo. Makeshift defence, it won't be easy. Plus, we're chasing Benfica (3 points behind) on the league, play for the league on the weekend, and away with Benfica after Bayern. Insane two weeks.

As for today, loved our players, all of them. Jackson was injured for a month and ran miles. Herrera, with all his lack of skill was pressing like a lunatic. Torres was superb in the 2nd half. Quaresma was instrumental on the front and tidy on defence. Extremely proud of all of them.

I don't see it also. I mean he's good enough in the Bundesliga but Bayern are so much better than everyone in that league that it doesn't matter.

God I hate this thing Neuer does every time when he conceedes a goal, fighting for the ball like biggest prick. Probably one of the most arrogant players around.
I think Quaresma hates it too, he interrupted his celebration to go for the ball like if we were on the 90th minute and needed another goal.

Barely played didn't he?

Yes, but he used to be too lazy at that times. I mean imagine Mourinho buying such a lazy player. He was on a big contract at Inter and he barely played.

The football you played at times this season was absolutely on another level to anything I have ever seen from your team. Of course it didn't last because of Alaba getting injured and him being so vital to the 3-4-3 you played at that time.

Naturally in the end that it will count for little if you had 4 or 5 months with some of the best football every played at your club when at the end of the season no trophies are won but imo it mainly shows that even the best teams can be crippled by an injury crisis.

When has Bayern performed brilliantly?

They lost the season series to 2nd ranked Wolfsburg and 3rd ranked Gladbach, tied the series with 5th placed Schalke. They won at home against Leverkusen 1-0, so they could still lose the season series to the 4th placed team as well. Now they got hammered by the first decent side in the Champions League. Once again Pep tried to outsmart himself by playing Alonso and Lahm out of position. They feed on average teams that lack in class, tactics and confidence.

Holy shit I've only just seen the Porto Bayern result

Ye I agree with that, he is probably the best right back in the world why move into CM when they have so much quality there anyway?

Which was pretty stupid. Should have let Neuer hammer it into the stands. Maybe ref gives him a 2nd yellow for delay of game.

Henckes Bayern was one of the most complete teams I had ever seen.

Pep has made the Bayern so much worse and taken away all their strengths they had under Heynckes.

I'm not sure if you are being fair to Pep, Heynckes side was superb and almost any team compared with it would come off worse. Still, its difficult to know what to make of Pep's Bayern. This is the same time that put seven goals in against Roma. When they get it right, they're wonderful. Still, this Bayern is like a well oiled machine: if one part of it doesn't work it all falls apart, and there's no one player who can make it work.

He does that always, it's so small time IMO, I want to punch him in the face for that.

It was clear for everyone to see when Madrid spanked them last season.

Heynckes Bayern would have brushed that Madrid team away so easily.

I was disgusted at how Pep's Bayern had no game plan at all for Madrid's counter attack.

Lahm started in defensive midfield against Algeria, too. If not for Neuer´s brilliant performance Germany would have been down 0-3 at halftime. Only when Mustafi got hurt, Khedira came on and Lahm moved back to RB, where he stayed for the rest of the tournament. In a sense Mustafi was Germany´s tournament MVP.:wenger:

Hector Herrera, Martins Indi, Martinez and Casemiro of Porto would all look good in our team. Wouldn't mind at all if LVG raided the Porto squad over the summer. The win will do wonders for Lopetegui's reputation also

He did it when Aguero scored his second past him this season and ended up on his arse  always makes me laugh when I watch it

Sometimes I feel that Pep, a bit like our own Louis Van Gaal, tries to be too clever by half. The Madrid game last year is a perfect example of that: Sending out his team in an unusual shape with some overly baked plan that was easily exploited by Ancelotti. I guess there's a thin line between genius and madness.

I was watching barca, only seen the result and Martinez goal. What happened?

Not a massive upset that Porto won in my eyes. I've watched them a lot this season and after a shaky first few months they have been excellent. So well organised and play with excellent pace and always look dangerous. Second leg will be incredibly tough.

Ye it made absolutely no sense at all. Guardiola just looks to be a very limited and stubborn coach.

He wants his team playing one way even if it doesn't suit his players.

Much like an English manager insisting on long ball 4-4-2 all the time and never changing or adapting.

I remember Robben and Ribery used to get on the ball very high up the pitch and we're devastating.

Guardiola changes everything and they are getting on the ball much deeper and not being any where near as effective as they were the year before.

Jesus, buying more than one Porto player would cost what, 3 billion euros?

I remember a Bayren poster on here saying that season was sort of one off, a coming together of everything at the right moment(Losing the final at home the year before and having that extra hunger of putting the mistakes of the past season right). So it might have never worked in the long term but it's sad that we never got the chance to see.

I don't think Pep has only one way of playing, I think the trouble is he tries several different ways of playing. He's used 3-4-3, 3-5-2, 4-3-3 etc. just this season. He also changes the emphasis in different games. There's a degree of over-thinking in what he does nowadays, something that wasn't present in his first few years at Barcelona. I wonder if he's just bored? If he just finds it tedious drilling 4-3-3 having done it so extensively, and needs to find projects e.g. Lahm the midfielder to keep him occupied?

So after the first round of games I'd say it's:

Real Madrid 60% Atletico 40%
Juventus 70% Monaco 30%
Barcelona 100% PSG 0%
Porto 50% Bayern 50%

Luckily LVG found the formula and doesnt tinker that much.
I think Pep believes his own hype about him being the master tactician, there were some articles last and this season about revolutionary tactics he has brought into football and now he is too clever for his own sake.
Having few formations and tactics is good but changing it too much is never good.

Weird that with 35 he is still better than Iniesta. This isn't the first game where he looks better either.

Xavi has looked very good this season when coming on and helping control the game. He's still too good for Qatar or the MLS or wherever he's headed.

Probably doesn't get through a lot of legwork though and hence doesn't start as often.

no good weeks/season for german football :(

too many injuries everywhere...

Hopefully he stays at Barca. A fantastic player and absolutely brilliant to watch. Going to Arabia wouldn't be right as long as he's still able to play on this level.

He's better by far, and it's been like that for a while.

I'm sure he doesn't have the legs anymore though. If he were to start from the beginning he would probably not be able to give this sort of performance/tire out at the highest level. Maybe Busquets and Mascherano behind Xavi could be a solution. That midfield looked good in the final minutes of the game today.
