Champions League Round of 16 (12th Feb - 13th Mar)

If this is the best team Germany has to offer, then oh man they're in major decline.

Might stick a bet on Liverpool to score more than 3 goals vs Bayern at Anfield ..

I wish we had drawn Dortmund instead now. Bayern in europe are a lot more steely and experienced than these.

Great game by Ajax. Very high tempo in the first half, got a little bit worse in the second half which is normal, but they still played well. I fell they deserved more, probably 2-2 or 3-2.

Ramos was titanic today, he solved his own problems and the problems the team mates created.

For some reason it doesn't work so well for Real Madrid if the media hails them. They give their best in Europe when journalists say they stand no chance or when they say the opponent is as favorite as them.

Just saw the Spurs-Dortmund result. Quite impressive result. I feel Tottenham will be a serious contender this year.

You could say that about Real a lot of times in the CL in recent seasons.

Aside from Bayern last year, it didn’t happen that often.

Ajax should have played it safe and tried to keep the 1-1. It was very stupid the way they played after their goal.

Call me delusional if you want, but based on what I saw today, I can see Ajax advancing.

VAR or no, Real Madrid simply has more experience and quality. Carvajal is a huge player. Not you @carvajal. :nono:

Yea they beat Atletico Madrid 4-0 but they aren't that good

They've crippled by injury on both the offensive and defensive end but still I'm mad Favre didn't do anything to change what was going on.

Not saying who's right or wrong here but taking a single game from months ago where the scoreline in no way reflected the match (and which was played at home!) to make your point feels like clutching at straws a bit. :)

1-1 is not a good result at home. They had to go for another goal.

I'm honestly surprised, I expected a lot more from Dortmund. I get that they have injuries to key players, but so do we.

Second half we totally shut them down and Vertonghen was rampant down that left hand side.

You don't nearly the same amount of important players out. Kane, Alli, Davies vs Reus, Paco, Akanji, Weigl and Pizseck.

How did it not reflect the match? Dortmund dominated that match, Atletico hit the post with a brilliant effort from 30 yards but didn't create a single big chance.

Feck off. You whine about your injuries but Dortmund were without 5 starters.

Injuries mean you can't play with any intensity in the second half and allow Jan Vertonghen to run rampant down the left hand side? It was an embarrassment. Yes you're going to be limited in an attacking sense when missing guys like Reus but you still try and keep the scoreline down and don't constantly lose the ball in stupid areas. We're missing two of our best players including the star player at the club so it's not like we were at full strength either, 3-0 is a terrible scoreline considering this is a side who are clear at the top by 5 points.

We were utterly crippled by injuries at Stamford Bridge in the cup (Son, Lucas, Kane, Alli missing, Sissoko came off early) but still made it competitive and ended up taking it to pens. There is no excuse for how poor Dortmund were in that second half for a side top of the league, no excuse at all.

Not really, 1-1 would have been fine the way these teams match up. They’ll have their chances at the Bernabeu.

I can’t see a team as experienced as this Madrid throwing it away now but I still believe we’ll see a competitive second leg

I have a feeling that Spurs might surprise a few people and go through in a commanding way. Dortmund haven't convinced me since the winter break and they will miss Reus more than Tottenham will miss Kane (and Alli).

Regarding the age old leagues comparison, let’s not forget Dortmund have tied the last 2 Bundesliga games, went out in the cup last week, and are generally struggling without Reus. United, the in-form PL team, didn’t have the best game at home either last night.

Yeah I think Real got in trouble a few years ago for this. But if the yellow card is given for a tackle can you really prove it was deliberate?
Yeah I think it was Alonso or Ramos? Not sure how they can prove it but I think everyone knows he did this because this tie was pretty much in the bag and the second leg is a great game to miss.

They definitely weren’t playing like it though.

Madrid were there for the taking. Incredible how they got away with this result

The thing is that you want Real to lose so bad that you just dismiss the obvious.

You really think Casemiro, Modric and Kroos are interested in a running competition with those young players? This is a recurring theme in Real games in CL. They're not trying to show they're better, they're just trying to win. They play on experience, 4 CL's titles in 5 years experience.
They'll get burned one day but Ajax was never the team to do it.

Yes, Dortmund have more injuries, but the point is we have issues of our own.

The injuries aren't enough to justify conceding 3 in one half and failing to even mount one competent attack. That was a total mess.

I fell off the Frenkie de Jong hype train. Talented, sure, but not that special at this point.

De Ligt however, is truly amazing. The way he knocked away Vinivius like a little girl at one point, amazing.

Spurs proved tonight what you can really achieve with a rock solid defense. Vertonghen, Sanchez and Alderweireld were immense. Just image what our forwards could do with that kind of support behind them.

Hoffenheim and Bremen scored 3 goals against Dortmund (away from home), so don't get so giddy about doing the same. Dortmund is crippled with injuries right now and have hit a really bad patch of form. Pizseck would've been the starting RB today as Hakimi has been playing LB the whole season. There is a very decent chance that Pizseck would've been defensively strong on the right side.

Anyways, bask in the glory of the win. You deserved it. But Dortmund are much much better than this and are missing many more key players than Spurs.

EDIT: Also, I hate you and I hate Tottenham

Anyone who uses one off matches as an indicator of league quality needs to be sectioned in a room with @Wumminator

Eh, could also point to German teams in general in Europe recently. The league has dropped down a level IMO and tonight was just another example of that, not so long ago they were neck and neck with the PL and ahead of Serie A, now I think they're a clear 4th. I wouldn't be surprised if Liverpool simply emphasised this point next week.

Great 2nd half from Spurs. Will have to be big turn around for us not to progress through to the QFs from here, especially if Kane and/or Alli are back.

Super Jan!

Dahoud instead of Reus, Pulisic instead of Guerreiro (fitness issue? rotation?), a third CB instead of Piszczek. Plus Alcacer still not fit.

Massive downgrade in quality going forward and too much to handle for Dortmund, who already were in a bad spell. Spurs did very well without their key players, but in the 2nd half it was mainly Dortmund who weren't good enough in possession, imo.

Dortmund conceded 3 goals, 3 games in a row. Defensive issues, wheels coming off their season. Can see Real and Spurs going through very comfortably in the return games. Only close second leg now should be Roma / Porto. Other games are done barring miracle performances.

Plus Diallo was rushed back from injury.

Amazing result for Spurs tonight, they look set fair now and I'd be very surprised if they didn't go through now, it would take a total collapse/huge Dortmund performance to turn this tie around.
If they have Kane and Alli back that will only increase their chances, although Son seems to improve almost on a game by game basis. The first goal came at a good time for Spurs it was looking pretty tight until then but they won well in the end.

Yeah but .. 3 without reply? It's one thing conceding 3, it's another conceding 3 and offering zilch going forward. Dortmund were manhandled in that second half in every area of the pitch.

I get that injuries had a big impact on the result, and quite honestly before the game I'd much rather have had Kane/Alli back and Dortmund at full strength, I don't like CL ties where stars are missing. But Dortmund were horrendous second half regardless of injuries, they know a lot of players may be back for the 2nd leg so all they had to do was keep the scoreline respectable and perhaps try and nick a goal but instead totally folded.

Tonight wasn’t a good example of german teams in Europe. Usually german teams give it a real go to then make really dumb mistakes and feck it up. Look at Hoffenheim or Gladbach or even Bayern against Real and Atletico. That’s typical. Dortmund tonight looked like they were playing a Europa league qualifier against FK Baku. They were a disgrace.

EPL has been crap in Europe since Chelsea won in 2012. Only last year Pool reached the final but before that I can't remember anyone other than City one year who reached the semi-final. Atleast Bayern have consistently reached the semi-final for the last good few years. Dortmund also reached the quarterfinals a couple of times, one when they had the attack on their bus before a match.
