Champions League Round of 16 (12th Feb - 13th Mar)

Schalke are 14th in Bundesliga. I don't know how they are acceptable in the CL every year despite playing absolute fluke football in basically every game as well as even being near the relegation zone in Bundesliga. Just like when Schalke went to the CL semis.
They're doing not too bad right now, are they

That in itself took from 32:50 mins to 37:13 seconds before the penalty was taken.. now imagine a couple of more decisions like that in a first half with a referee taking an age and players surrounding him. Ten minutes might not sound like an exaggeration.

You say this as if stoppage time is actually based on stoppages throughout the game. How many games do you see players taking an age to go off when they're substituted, someone getting treatment on the pitch for 6-7 minutes only for the referee to give the standard 4 minutes of injury time? If its the first half expect 1-2 minutes at most unless something egregious has happened

(I jest with that first sentence but I have a hard time believing that stoppage time is actually accurate right now. In fact I find when one team is dominating and the match is more or less over, referees give even less injury time)

Peps away record in the Cl is piss poor. It really needs to be highlighted more often

That foul by Partey, I never understand the point of them. Why would you throw yourself like that, there ?

In the middle of the pitch with seconds to go no less. And now he’s out of the return leg. I’d be fuming if I was Simeone.

Few things from this so far.

Offside rule needs an overhaul. How goals like that can be scored is a farce

Good and bad sides of VAR. Penalty harsh and took forever but backed the ref on the 2nd pen.

Fermandino is fecked with VAR

One of those game where we were completely comfortable but somehow managed to feck ourselves twice and Schalke only feck themselves once. Think even if we were to lose 3-1 I'd be confident of going through at home.
Nothing to argue with either decision either (first could have went either way), both pen's but I hope the ref stays consistent on the pulling in the box.

Was thinking the same thing about Smalling. If this becomes a thing, these guys are going to spend more games suspended than they play.

What’s the point in signing Ronaldo solely to win you the CL if you’re gonna put this midfield behind him? Pointless, Matuidi and Bentancur are useless.
What I've been saying all season. Ronaldo plays so far away from goal(to compensate for his lack of service) that his best weapons aren't even utilised often.

Couple thoughts:

Lots of teams have problems vs this style.
Athletic has actually a really strong team.
Trying to influence ref at every occasion.

DeSciglio pretty bad this game.
In this kind of games you can see how important Khedira is.

0:0 will be an okay result. 1:1 or better "the dream"
Interesting. From what I heard Khedira is missing this tie altogether? Hopefully he'll be fine!

Standard xenophobic and homophobic chants from the Atleti crowd as usual. Spent more time singing about Ronaldo than about their players.

So with the help of VAR both games have seen initial (non) penalty decisions correctly overturned but people will apparently complain because of few extra seconds eaten up by it (ignoring all the other time wasting that goes on during the game).

Khedira had a surgery on his heart yesterday. In Germany we only know that he had cardiac dysrhythmia
He will be out for awhile...

What are they saying? Ronaldo being (slur for) Portugese and gay or something?

The handball penalty was harsh.

Crazy how UCL proves how overrated EPL is

 Because City are losing at HT?

They'll win this tie. Liverpool vs Bayern is still 50/50, and we smashed Dortmund. United/PSG is pretty much done and dusted, but United are 4th in our league so expected.

Still very possible that 3 out of 4 English teams will progress.

I'd agree with that, it's better to wait for all the ties to played before making any statements

are Schalke doing well, I know it was two pens but are they deserving to be in front?
The first pen was rather bullshit. Apart from the pens, Schalke had two shots at the goal. So... more than expected.

Great result for you guys yesterday. Really highlighted the strength of La Liga

Have yet to lose a game all tournament, got 25 shots on target. How did Arsenal do in their Europa match against a team that hasn't played since December?

Thought so
