Champions League Round of 16 (14th Feb - 15th Mar)

He does, but then Alonso does after. It's subtle but if you focus solely on the ball it becomes obvious.
Yup, can see it now. It is extremely subtle you are right.

I was torn between what game to watch and ended up opting for Arsenal. Glad I did as not only is it a good game, I just don't want to see a game reffed by you-know-who. Not just because of THAT game as I swear he ruins every game with his nonsensical decisions.

 He got the bloody ball.

I've gone to the bother of recording it for you.

Sorry mate, "Getting the ball" means changing the direction or nicking the ball away from the player. Alonso's studs barely brushed it and just didn't have any effect where the ball was played by Walcott, instead he brought down Walcott. Its a penalty to me.

;) Gentle ribbing at your expense. Alonso touches it after Walcott does. Watch it again.
Still a pen for me. That would be given outside of the box because of the follow through.

This is the style of refereeing that UEFA promotes - big presence, taking initiative, giving a foul when in doubt (or someone falls for whatever reason). Basically everything you wouldn't want a referee to be. And Cakir is all that.

It's what ruined Clattenburg, as well. Used to be a decent ref, before he got all those gigs in Europe.

Yeah that explains it.

So if Arsenal win 1-0 by playing well everything will be forgotten? The Wenger out brigade will be silenced and Wenger will stay?

From this angle it looks like the direction doesn't change. From the other angle the direction change is clear. It's not just a "slight" touch with 1 atom of his boot, he changes the direction of the ball and makes it go out for a corner. The angle we're looking at doesn't show the direction change though. Perspective.

Great attempt of a save from Neuer on the Walcott shot, absolutely nothing he could have done about the shot that came straight at him, he had no right to attempt to save it but he went for it has my utmost respect for that.

So 20-something caftards agree -after watching slomo replays from 3 angles- that Alonso either didn't play the ball, or clearly did.
Shocking refereeing!!!

I've seen it 10 times and only on the 9th was I able to pick out the apparent nick everything says is so clear. It's not clear at all, even now I'm not 100% sure my eyes aren't making it up. How is the ref meant to see that in real time?

If the ref had done his job properly we'd be half way there.

Good performance though, still on track to go through.

Ok fair enough mate. I admit to only going off that angle so can't compare to what actually happened.

You can get the ball without nicking it away from the player.

Think about it as of two different plays. You touch the ball, but the ball remains under the control of the attacking player. That's phase 1. Not a penalty. But if you then bring down the attacking player, who can still play the ball and has it under control, that is a penalty.

Getting a touch on the ball can mean the slightest nick. That will change the position of the ball, if the player was kicking the ball and you got a slight nick on it, then the player would miss kick it, thus saving a potential goal.

Let's see if Napoli break through the overall confidence that Real will uktimately edge this tie

Hope not. It would be pathetic from him and the club. It would create a truly toxic atmosphere.

Was the ball still with Walcott after that?

Not sure about Mustafi myself, he's a bit well, poor really.
