Chelsea under Conte | Let's sign the next Hazard, literally.

I think this guy is a great manager. His best quality is to create a proper team spirit. His teams are full with energy and enthusiasm and ready to fight tooth and nail. He made a relatively unimpressive Italy side peform brilliantly in the Euros. They were without five (!) top midfielders vs Germany--Verratti, Montolivo, Marchisio, De Rossi and Motta--and nevertheless gave them quite a game. Conte's enthusiasm inspires his players big time.

good post.

Hmm, he was always shit in UCL, a competition where I think tactics matter most.

I don't think he was poor in the competition at all and he did very well with a very limited Italian side.

The parts up front don't fit and the back end is sloooow.

It's going to be an over reliance on Hazard again similar to 2014-2015 unless Chelsea beings in more players who can link up and create

Limited as in pretty much the squad they have now -Dybala + Tevez, Vidal and Pirlo. Conte had a very good squad.

Our second CL season under Conte was disappointing with the group stage exit. But the last game against Gala should probably not have gone ahead under these conditions. And it's easy to forget that under Allegri we struggled to qualify as well in a similar group before we made it to the final. The CL is about small margins and he only coached a team in the CL for two seasons. That's hardly enough evidence to make him out to be a CL failure. But it also means that he still has to demonstrate his tactical credentials at the very top before he can be called brillant.

Between the 50th and 75th minute, they were very very good. West Ham couldn't cope.

I meant the limited Italian national team.

Batashayui looked very promising when he came on, I thought. I don't think it's going to be spectacular football from this side, but they will grind out results not playing well, like at west ham. If Hazard can pull something out the bag while they defend the life out of every game, they'll go far.

Conte has a reputation for getting his team to work hard and play well collectively. If he does that, Chelsea should be there or thereabouts come the end of the season. The question is how much last season will effect them when they get a bad result. A season like that can leave pretty big scars. Also, I do feel they might be too reliant for goals on Costa. Hazard is mediocre in front of goal, and William is more of a team player who does also get you some goals. Their attacking midfielders are particularly prolific either. I think they might go for 2 upfront eventually to give them a bigger goal threat.

They need James, don't think Madrid would sell for anything less than ADM.

Yeah, that could well happen, though wouldn't Batshuayi (sp?) and Costa be too similar? Not that I've seen enough of the former, in all honesty.

Oscar does have a few goals in him though, but he's been below average for a long time. Ditto Fabregas, who I think is on the decline and has been for a while. As Clariion mentions though, James could be ideal but they'll have to shell out 60-70m pounds for him IMO, and Zidane said yesterday that he wasn't for sale. (talk is cheap I know).

How/where can Chelsea fit James? He has no place in a Conte team whatsoever. These James rumours all sound like bollocks really. That said, Chelsea will be still be spending 100m+ more on a couple of quality signings (Koulibaly and Lukaku/Icardi)

As for goals, I think once the team gets more comportable we will start to see a lot more of Pedro over Willian. If Pedro and Hazard can both chip in with 10-15 goals each we will be on out way.

No idea about that new fellow. But they also had this left footed forward last season. Can't remember his name. Toure? Looked decent.

I think James would be a great fit. With Kante and Matic, he'd get plenty of protection. He's got terrific final third impact. Not sure Conte will fancy his defensive contribution though.

Completely forgot about Pedro. If he steps up this season it will add loads to your attack.

I think James will do alright, especially with Kante/Matic protecting him tbf. And Willians another work horse. But yeah, Pedro could be a solution, but he depends on quite a bit of service himself.

Traore, wasn't it? I think he's out on loan, unless I'm mistaken @duffer

Traore. He's very talented.

Yep. Bertrand Traore. At Ajax for the season (he started for them in their champs league qualifier the other day).
Thanks duffer! I do recall reading he went out on loan. I really thought this was going to be the season he would get a lot of minutes for your side, as he saw quite a bit of minutes last season iirc.

I think the general feeling was to get him starting every week, rather than the odd cameo from the bench. The manager at Ajax was in charge at Vitesse when Traore did well there so I would think he'll get a lot of playing time.

He actually signed a contract extension just before going on loan so I don't think the club has given up on him.

Yeah, he seems a big talent, so I'd have imagined they just loaned him for the experience. There's another guy out on loan in La Liga, Musonda or something? He seemed a talent as well. Is he doing his second stint out in La Liga?

Also, it's very difficult for a new manager to come in, with the expectation of at least top 4, performing under the added pressure of blooding in unproven youngsters.

They might still win today but anyone that saw the first half against West Ham could see his performances coming.
They don't have enough to win the title imo. Their midfield is woefully uncreative.

Still early days to be fair. Watford were a tough side at home last season.

Initial impressions of Chelsea aren't anything remarkable but certainly don't look any worse than Arsenal or Spurs.

Too reliant on Hazard to make things happen. And he's never been an overly productive player.

Also, very lucky that referees seem to be very unwilling to send of Costa.

Chelsea are going to do well this season. They never entertain at the best of times, but they are so good at winning with late goals

Passion, grit and some good creative players when they want to show up. Top four nailed on - maybe even the title if they turn it up a level.

Still the think they need to spend. But they look a lot better when they have two strikers on the pitch. It makes up for their lack of goal threat. Also, Cesc is more creative dull as feck Oscar.

Btw, I really really like Kante.

He's awesome. Real shame United didn't move for him.

Their luck will run out if they don't invest anymore into the side. Very jammy at the minute.

Only going to get better. Showed great spirit and Hazard looks great. No Europe is also a big plus for them.

Dont have Europe which may help them prepare for games better. Think theyve been a little lucky, but you need luck as well as talent.

They have grit and passion in spades but that will only take you so far. Even against West Ham, when they played very well in the second half...they had long spells of not even looking close to scoring a goal.
That's their main problem.
