Chelsea under Conte | Let's sign the next Hazard, literally.

Something to be said for a side that will fight with their manager. Dark horses for the title in my book.

Clearly the much better team today - no excuses, congrats to them.

A lot is being made about this formation change. Given that three-at-the-back hasn't ever really worked at the top in the Premier League (from my memory at least), it'll be interesting to see how long it works for Conte.

The man has a clear plan and as I start before the start of the season he will go far. Far better than our chop and change nonsense.

Fancied them or City to win it. It isn't quite "his" side yet, either. Could make them a frightening side

I don't know who tried it before, but this time it's an Italian top manager. Chelsea already resembled Conte's Italy quite a bit today, with their mix of discipline, aggressive pressing and quick counters.

3 at the back was not uncommon in the league in the 90s, tbf.

Recently from memory: we tried under LVG (for one whole pre-season, and about 45 minutes of the first game ), Rodgers experimented with it for a little bit at Liverpool, Dalglish did at Liverpool for a bit (not that they were a top team when he was in charge). Did AVB try it also at Chelsea? I'm not sure about that one, I might be confusing it with his high defensive line which exposed Terry and the rest of them. Mancini tried it during Sir Alex's last season, and that didn't work either.

But as I say, that's going by my generally shocking memory :D

Said at the start of the season that they were my front runners for the season...Chelsea fans scoffed.
Said he'll play 3 at the back after he got Luiz...Chelsea yahoo, "Why do people keep saying that"..

He is an excellent manager. Very pragmatic. He'll do well in this league.

He had words with him at the end. Wouldn't say what he said to him bit wasn't complimentary.
Oh, I wouldn't think that was calling him out. There's no basis to do that having just lost 4-0 fair and square.

They are through their rough patch.

Will challenge for the title but really arent that good. Citeh are better player for player.

He pulled him up on it.
 He whined like a sore, petty, whinging loser that he is in these situations. Feel free to find the innumerable occasions Jose's done much worse when his side are winning.

Conte felt the atmosphere dull a bit, as it does in the final minutes of a game like this only to rise at the end. It was nothing to do with Jose but he had to make it about him(unverified translation, I might add)

Thought Azpilicuta did well as a centre back. Be interesting to see if Terry and Zouma can get back into the side.
Azpi's the best defender in the League. Luiz is highly important for our build up. If anyone's going to be left out it's Cahill but he's played well in recent weeks to be fair to him.

What on earth are you on about.

I would probably agree with this. I also think playing just once a week will be key if we're still in the race come squeaky bum time.

The Arsenal battering was a blessing in disguise & Conte luckily stumbled upon this new formation.

Hopefully the battering we took today will have the same effect for us!

I'd imagine Cahill would be the one looking over his shoulder as he's slower than Azpi, Zouma, and Luiz. He's also probably only better defensively than Luiz as well.

Tbh they didn't outplay us. There goals came from awful defensive mistakes from us. We have won games with less chances than today. Had Luiz been sent off we'd be talking about a much different game right now.

They weren't great today but it's like what the 3rd time he's played with this 3-4-2-1 and generally everyone seems to know their roles. Moses and Alonso aren't exceptional but they're doing a decent job, and they allow Hazard and Pedro to just play their game and not worry about defending. He's building that team around it's best players and fixing it's defensive deficiencies with the back three, it's good management. I like Conte, even today when he tried to hype up the Chelsea fans, I loved that, he's the kind of guy who if you play for him you'll leave everything on the pitch and it was reflected in all the 50/50's they won today.
With city and Liverpool looking likely for the title, I wouldn't mind seeing Chelsea gatecrash it ahead of Arsenal to be honest, if just for Conte and Kante whom is also very likeable.

He played it at Juve and Italy, wouldn't say he stumbled on it. He would have used it but he felt the players wouldn't be used to it but circumstances meant it was probably the better option and so he's using it now.

Oh no doubt he's tactically astute & knows the formation well. I just doubt he'd envisioned playing Azpi at CB or Moses at RWB before the season started.

The switch to 3-4-3 has been glorious though. Moses has been a complete revelation in that position. Like you said, he's not normally exceptional but at RWB his strengths are amplified & his weaknesses are no longer a hindrance to his team. Same with Alonso who was written off before he even kicked a ball, his lack of pace was considered a huge weakness but teams haven't been able to exploit it yet. Cahill & Matic have covered him well.

Kante is Kante & is proving he's definitely not a DM but I have to give him huge credit for Matic. Still cautious about him after watching his performances over the last 18 months but it seems Conte has played him back into form. He actually resembles a footballer again. David Luiz behind him certainly helps with his lackluster build-up play but his rejuvenation was a nice surprise.

He finally has his spine now. Ultimately, the team will only go as far Hazard takes them. He's been one of the best players in the League along with Coutinho & Sanchez but he still has another level in him. We can compete for the title despite being inferior talent wise to Arsenal & City if he reaches it.

Ah, yeah that makes more sense, would agree with the positional place of Dave and Moses, Terry/ Zouma injuries and Ivanovic being so bad probably left him with little choice. Very right about Moses too, he's a bit like Valencia, not quite good enough to be a winger but a lot better deeper. It's great to see a back three formation though, I've always liked them, think it's something we should consider too because it would allow us to play more of our players in their correct position but can't see Jose ever using it. I think title talk is too soon IMO but you look more stable and a lot better than us all of a sudden and you are on 19 points so who knows.

I think this guy is a great manager. His best quality is to create a proper team spirit. His teams are full with energy and enthusiasm and ready to fight tooth and nail. He made a relatively unimpressive Italy side peform brilliantly in the Euros. They were without five (!) top midfielders vs Germany--Verratti, Montolivo, Marchisio, De Rossi and Motta--and nevertheless gave them quite a game. Conte's enthusiasm inspires his players big time.

I think he's doing even better than I expected back in August.

When Conte took over I said that he was Mourinho on steroids. In that I ment that they share some of the same beliefs and basic priciples, but that Conte is alot better at getting the most out of his players. I still feel this is the case.

Several of our players have been poor compared to last year (Martial, Rashford, Blind and Smalling). I also feel that Shaw proved more in five games last season than so far this season. On the other hand, some players have been better, for instance Mata, Valencia and Herrera. I actually believe a manager like Conte would get the best out of all of our players. Herrera and Pogba would be perfect in that midfield setup!

Be careful. you will trigger a Jose vs Conte thread and we know Jose has the better resume. Conte is the "new kid on the block" so to speak. He is doing well though and I like his passion. it is kind of like early days Jose
