He did well with Timmy and seems to have done well with De Gea so I'd be cautious about parting with him.
However, I think any "top class" goalkeeping coach would have got the best out of Dave this season... I think weight (muscle) gain has helped and more composure is a result of growing up, not necessarily coaching.

This flies in the face of everything you've said about Moyes this season.
Lolz! I think you're wrong. Coaches are extremely important, especially for young goal keepers.
Not to nit-pick, but you've banged the "prehistoric coaching" drum re: Moyes with a while now.
Eric Steele is a far better goalkeeping coach and was very involved with the early development with De Gea. Woods is OK but like the rest of the coaching staff most of them inexperienced in coaching. Even though some were good players that does not make them good coaches and there lies a lot of Moyes problems'
As far as SAF coming back he would have to start from scratch with a coaching team as most of them have moved on and would only come back in an elevated role or were promised so much when SAF gave it in again.
Its not just a question of getting coaches in, you have to try them out, develop them and still manage the greatest club in the world, Unless you have a very experienced manager who has done well in most areas in the game it will all be the same. Was way ahead of his time during his playing career in Glasgow: his dedication to training and being as physically fit as possible was unusual back in the 80s, especially in Glasgow. I've never seen another GK with the level of concentration that Woods had.

Eric Steele was also a fantastic GK coach. Another one ahead of his time which was why SAF picked him. As I said the early development of De Gea was with Steele something De Gea has not forgotten.
Yeah Woods was an excellent keeper: suave and physically imposing. To be honest I reckon England should have played him at Italia '90 when Shilton was looking past it. And I'm glad he's made good on his strong reputation within the game at United.
To be honest if van Gaal comes in, I can't see him making THAT many changes to the backroom staff other than to replace Steve Round with maybe someone who knows the Club.
Van Gaal will definitely bring his own coaches. His biggest quality is how he coaches teams and make them better then the sum of its players. For that he needs his own men. I wouldn't be surprised to bring also a goalkeeping coach because the keeper is integral to Van Gaal's system (his teams play the ball to keeper very often), which maybe will be a good move considering that it's time now for De Gea to improve that aspect of the game (getting involved more on the play).

Whoever comes in should ask De Gea and Lindegard for a blunt answer. They are the two that will benefit, they should have a say. It's different to a normal coach as Woods only has to work with keepers I would assume.
I'd like to see him stay. His loyalty to Moyes might make it hard though. And if a new manager wants his own staff then he will be gone. He's done well with De Gea though. I know people are saying De Gea would have improved regardless, but I'm not so sure about that. Hope he stays.
Lindegaard may be off in the summer. He's arguably too good to be a no.2 and deserves playing time. Sam Johnstone is building a fine reputation for himself on loan and I'd be more than happy having him as Dave's deputy.
I agree. But he's a big United fan isn't he? I've heard he absolutely loves the club. Wouldn't surprise me if he stays on, and happy as the #2. Don't begrudge him if he does go though.

Does not always work like that. Schmeihel has been retired for over a decade and has shown zero interest in coaching. And Van Der Saar already has a job on Ajax's board.
I doubt Van Gaal has a particular GK coach, so I'd really just go with whatever Dave wants. Vital we keep him happy.
Perhaps David should have a say in this, but I really feel that De Gea's improvement comes down to his own ability.

I'm not sure about that. He had quite a bit of kinks in his first season that have been worked. Of course he has to be willing to accept them as kinks and work on them but he can't do it on his own. The goalkeeping coach should definitely know what he's talking about. That and being a good guy. That job is a lot more personal because you've got the one or two coaches for 2-6 players. That's it. They're spending almost every day together. It's like a partnership.
Woods staying is only a good thing. Three goalkeeping coaches in three years isn't optimal. But it's up to Woods if he wants to stay and the new manager if he would like to keep him. I don't think managers are generally very tied to having their own goalkeeping coach so I don't think it will be a problem with the new manager.
Sure he might but he also has to think for himself. Moyes probably won't be unemployed for long but he will be unemployed and Woods probably doesn't want to be that.

He is still the GK coach for the U.S national team so he would not be completely unemployed.
Not bothered either way. De Gea was great last year as well and will further improve anyway. Woods did a good job but I didn't like that De Gea this season has been mostly hoofing the ball to Fellaini or whoever. Don't know if Woods had anything to do with this or if that was all Moyes' instruction. However if we get a possession based manager, he might prefer a different goal keeping coach with more focus on not loosing possession everytime De Gea gets the ball.
Don't think that's anything to do with the keeper coach, that'll be a tactical decision by the manager.
Would love to see Van der Sar back at the club, but if I recall his family lived in holland towards the end of his career (think his wife was ill?) I hope no resentment to woods, DDG seems to have pushed on again, so like most on here, no reason to change if the manager is happy.

I agree with that. Considering how goalkeepers work very differently from the rest of the team, I think it's worth having the goalkeepers' input before a decision is made.
I'm sure Woods has done a fine job but I think De Gea would've performed to very similar levels this season regardless of who his coach was. Just like when most people had decided Steele leaving was such a terrible move, it didn't end up making much of a difference as I can't imagine De Gea being much better than he has been this season already.

I can't see Moyes getting another managerial job in a hurry after this, so there's every chance Woods might stay if he's asked to.
So, just to confirm, there's been no news that Woods has left no? Just Moyes, Round and Lumsden?

It's confirmed that he's staying at least till the end of the current season. I think after that it'll depend on what De Gea wants. It should, anyway.
What makes Steele so much better than Woods?
Woods has been a goalkeeping coach for 16 years for feck's sake. Inexperienced my hole.
I think whoever comes in will keep him. Whatever about a manager having assistant managers and coaches that they like working with, the position of goalkeeping coach is very specialised. He only works with the goalkeeper's on a daily basis so if they want him to stay we should keep him. I think Cech has had the same goalkeeping coach at Chelsea since he joined the club despite the fact they have been sacking managers left, right and centre in the last 10 years.
