"Classic" Movies That You Just Don't Get

I though apocalypse now was truly difficult to watch. Never been so frustrated by a film, thought it was total indulgent shit and hated it.

2001 A Space Odyssey - Never seen anything so shite and boring in all my life.

Batman A Dark Knight is another (not seen the newer one yet)

The new Spiderman reboot with the giant British lizard running around.

Didn't like The Godfather as much either. Always felt compelled to add it top movie lists 'cos of the hype. It is a very good book adaptation, that's about it.

Godfather II is mint though. Loved Godfather III as well.

Think I'm gonna be pelted by e-stones.
You don't like one but you like 3? The Godfather III was dire....

Forrest Gump works for 15 year olds and emotionally stunted adults. The sort of movie that would have been called a 'classic' if it were made in the 1940s or 1950s.

You've got to be kidding me. Of the great directors Hitchcock must be the simplest to understand. Is it just rear window or any others?

Nope, I quite liked his other movies like Dial M for murder, north by northwest, Psycho, etc. Infact, I like his direction style.

It's not that I didn't understant that movie, it's just that I think that it is over-rated. Personal opinon and all.

Jaws, The Shining, Anchorman, The Exorcist, Psycho.

The Shining in particular was shit. Don't think I'll ever fully appreciate jaws as it hasn't aged well, so I've no idea how groundbreaking it was back in it's heyday.

Re Exorcist, one too many demon films around these days, like above, probably why I can't fully appreciate how 'horrifying' it was when it was released. I watched it expecting it to give me nightmares for weeks. Nope.

Anchorman ain't funny full stop.. and neither is Will Ferrell.

Exorcist was a great film, not so much scary compared to horrors nowadays, but still holds up well.

There's still horrors i want to watch, Insidious is one of them, I'm a grown man but not watching that on my own - Supernatural horror, i'll not sleep

Looking forward to Hellraiser remake, could be good if made right.

Jaws is a movie I haven't seen in years, so can't really comment. I certainly remember being scared as a kid. The Shining is the scariest movie I've ever seen, so I'd be interested in hearing why you think it's shit. I kind of agree with Anchorman. I first watched it alone, and couldn't stand it. I then watched it again with some die-hard fans, and somewhat got drawn into it. Definitely overrated though. The Exorcist is like Jaws: I saw it too long ago, but I certainly remember being scared (more by the subtle imagery then by the histrionics at the end.) Psycho is a classic, full-stop. I only saw it for the first time about a year ago, and I couldn't believe what I had missed.

Speaking of Hitchcock, I find Vertigo to be a bit overrated. A very good movie, but not as good as Psycho, Rear Window, North by Northwest or even The Birds, in my opinion.

Love Vertigo myself. One of my all time top 10's. You Brits ought to be proud of Hitchcock. He is(or was) a national treasure.
I saw it when I was five. It was terrifying. But I agree it won't appeal to a grown up today, the effects are a bit dated.
Did Spike do the right thing?
Radio Raheem was asking for it.
I do think Mookie did the right thing. By chucking the trash can into the shop he saved Sal's life. The entire movie is about people misunderstanding each other, not communicating, not waking up. The opening lines from DJ Mister Senor Love Daddy are the key to the movie: "wake up ,wake up ,wake up.." and so on. Also observe that no one ever calls in to his station. It's about how reasonable people have their lives fecked up by assholes like Pino and Buggin' out.

On the subject of 'classic movies'. I think the original Star Wars series counts if the wider internet community is to be believed. Personally I despise it. Probably the worst popular franchise I have ever had the misfortune to watch. Alec Guinness is the only thing that makes those monstrosities worth watching for more than five minutes. Play Mass effect instead.

I love Jaws with a passion which could be down to the fact that I first viewed it during my formative years. Well, I say watched but I was crying under a table in the kitchen screaming for it to be turned off after about 10 mins! As I grew older I began to realise what a masterpiece it is and it's one of the very few flicks that I never get tired of - I can't even begin to count how many times I've viewed it. Don't think Spielberg has ever made a better film; one that really showcases his genius and, at the time, his creative freedom and courage as a filmmaker. Yeah, it's just a classic.

The Shining is alot more than just a conventional horror. Should watch Room 237. Some of the theories are barking mad but it's a very interesting documentary all the same.

I'm not sure I really got 12 Angry Men. Was surprised how much focus there was on the details of the case, which was a bit distracting in the end because, well, the guy was guilty god dammit. Plus there's a shot of the sweaty old fella talking straight at the camera that made me ill.

Watch Dog Day Afternoon next, it's fecking brilliant.

Some 'classics' or films people seem to like, that I don't rate.

'The Searchers' - John Wayne playing himself, a cnut
'The Birds' - boring.
'The Seventh Seal' - nice opening shot but the rest got lost up it's own arse
'The Conversaton' - I have more interesting conversations with myself
'Shutter Island' - not sure if it's considered a classic, but some people seem to believe it's in that bracket - it's shite
'Amelie' - just annoying and pointless
'Million Dollar Baby' - boring Oscar bait
'Clerks' - unfunny/crap dialogue and shit acting
