Cristiano Ronaldo - performances 2017/18

The ban is totally just. The referee should be demoted to second division for a few weeks though. Either he was totally incompetent or he was corrupt.

Yeah, I do think they should rest him for a bit and also have some consequences for a shit referee display. Ronaldo shouldn't have touched him as it enables this to happen as minimal as the contact was (there was at least more contact than in Suárez dive).

How has that happened now? It was the case even before yesterday's match or it isn't the case at all.

Well it wasn't true for about 2 minutes...

In Clasicos, 11 goals at Camp Nou and just 5 at the Bernabeu for Cristiano is a weird stat. He really loves playing the villain there. Messi also has more goals away vs Real than at home if I'm not mistaken.

Technically this is a 'push', just as Shelvey stepping on someone's foot was technically a 'stamp'. Still feels ridiculous they both players get banned for it, though. But I guess you have to draw the line somewhere to not encourage worse.

If Real get through this ban with positive results it may actually be great for them and Cristiano. With the Euros and the Confederations Cup two summers in a row, the extra rest and a proper preseason will be good for him.

Yeah that's weird but kind of shows each other's relentless desire to conquer enemy territories. To think about it, it's easier for me to recollect both of their performances in away clasicos than home ones. Some truly memorable ones for both.

They should be treated with respect and that means no touching like pushing. If you don't punish what Ronaldo did, doesn't matter if it was a slight push; it opens up referees to further pushing. I don't see how they can be respected after that. So the opposite point I don't understand.

What was Ronaldo trying to do with the push according to you?

No i think they are not actually allowed to be touched at all according to the rules. Di Maria got sent off a few years back and he didn't push the ref, he was trying to get his attention.

Ronaldo wasn't trying to harm him and obviously not trying to push the guy to the ground. He reacted in the heat of the moment to a decision he thought was unjustified. He was wrong to push him but he made a mistake.

It's funny that every time a Ref makes a mistake everyone is expected to forgive them, but that thinking isn't extended to players.

.

Don't be silly. This is physical contact. Of course that's different.

That isn't what happens at all though.

Fans don't forgive or forget refs, they remember their names for years and put the fortunes of their teams down to the ref who happens to be referring that match. Players spend the whole match trying to deceive them. Fans abuse them in their thousands. Managers then attack them after the match. Their actions are analysed in the media.

Nobody in that stadium is perfect. The manager makes mistakes in their line-ups, their tactics, their team talks, their transfer strategy, their subs. Players aren't expected to be be perfect. Nobody expects 100% passing accuracy or 100% shot accuracy or 100% tackles completed. So why do we expect refs (as incompetent as they may otherwise be) to be perfect when they have 22 incredibly fit athletes running around a large pitch, trying to win and often attempting to deceive the referee?

Pushing the ref, regardless of whether it is a shove to the floor or a little push like Ronaldo's yesterday, are unacceptable. I don't get why anybody would want to be a top level referee tbh and people will get the referees they deserve (imo anyway).

Everyone within the game pretty much expects everyone to forgive Refs for mistakes as it is a very hard job. And to be fair most level headed fans do forgive them in the vast majority of instances.

That's excellent if that is your experience (genuinely) but I do not see much forgiveness from fans towards refs, either during the match or indeed afterwards (though of course fans don't tend to go running after refs/ abusing them outside of the game as far as I'm aware).

Unforunately, I'd dare say that a level headed fan is a rather rare sight and quite difficult when it comes to being objective about your team!

Of course fans will be angry if a ref fecks their team over for a while after a match, if they do it more than once they will remember. But i seriously doubt the majority of fans hold mistakes against most Refs.

A blessing in disguise then. But I bet most madridistas would have hoped that it was Bale or Benzema who were sent off. Maybe they would have even applauded the ref for it, despite the controversy

That's a bit silly. Messi turns around and sees it looks like the ref is about to run into him, and pushes him away. Nothing like the Ronaldo push.

Hands to a ref no matter what apology you want to make, and it's clear as day that 1) the ref wasn't "about to run into him" and 2) that Messi knew it was a ref and was moaning about something towards him.

Now, that said, perhaps the written rule was different in 2009 and thus Saint Messi wasn't rightfully banned, but that's none of my business.

Seriously, watch it again. The ref is running past very close to him on his blind side, and he looks round just as the ref is right next to him. It looks like an instinctive defensive push away.

I don't like Barca, and although I think Messi is the most talented player of all time I don't feel any need to defend him as a person, any more than I would Ronaldo. I just think he didn't actually do anything wrong here.

5 match ban means absolutely nothing. He is nowhere near full fitness and was unlikely to start any games in the next few weeks anyhow. More time to get himself ready for Real's CL defence, and, more importantly, prepare and pace himself for Portugal at WC.
Aye, blessing in disguise if he wants to perform as well as he did at the business end of this season as he did in the last. Especially with the Confederations Cup having rolled on till the start of July.

The 4 match ban is justified. I mean it was not a justified red by any means, but you shouldn't touch the referee. But the shit that referees get away with is amusing. If you make one bad decision after another, they should face retrospective action.

Also, whenever I watch a La Liga match, it's the same thing. Players go down way to easily and act like they just broke all their bones simultaneously. The other guy gets the yellow and they are suddenly back to their feet again. The way they roll is funny though. Bunch of divas.

So he is upset and ZZ wants the ban reduced, well thats just tough.
4 games is right for a push on the ref , there is never an excuse to lay hands on the ref, does not matter how bad a mistake he makes.
What ZZ and Ronaldo should do, is just accept the ban , get on with it and learn from it, but all the pair will do is winge and moan like a pair of bitches.

Makes him heavier as well, in Portugal (Sporting) the young players don't work in building up their body until they reach about 20, the coach who told me that (over 30 years ago and I'm fecking old) was Sporting's youth team.

I believe you, although one can't exactly say that it has been holding him back!

In my experience people forgive their players' mistakes more easily or just outright forget all their teams' mistakes if they can even slightly blame the ref.

and not just fans, it's Mou's specialty too.
