Love watching the Athletico v Real games. Simeone could turn them into a proper dynasty if he had half of Real's budget.
It doesn't always work like that. Theoretically it should, as if he can do well with lesser players then he should be capable of doing better with more talented players, but there are other factors. Some managers just suit being the underdogs and working with lesser expectations more than they do managing star players with more pressure and expectations. Benitez is a good example of this. He did well with Valencia and Liverpool but when he took over Inter he struggled and did not do as well as people thought he would. People thought he would do better than he did at Liverpool and Valencia due to him having the best group of players in the league he was working in for the first time in his career, but it did not work out that way at all. Another example is Mourinho being able to win the CL with Porto but not with Chelsea or Madrid, despite having several attempts. Mourinho has shown in his career that he can win with both the underdogs and the favourites so I am not saying he struggles with pressure or anything, but the fact that he couldn't win the CL with Chelsea or Madrid and could win it with Porto shows that it is not as easy to win with big clubs is it is made out to be.

For what it is worth, I think Simeone would be a success if he had more money and more pressure at a club like Madrid, Bayern, Barcelona, Chelsea or if Atletico had more money to spend. I am just saying that him being more successful than he has been at Atletico so far if he had better resources is not as straightforward or guaranteed like some people seem to think. I cannot say for sure if he would do well and be more successful with greater resources and better players as he has been with Atletico and neither can you or anyone.

Yes, just like Ashley Young's second goal in the 8-2 trashing was the winner... Technically.
No it wasn't though, because at 2-1 a game is not over technically. Why are you tryign to belittle his performence because he happened to celebrate the way he did, he was playing injured and still put a shift in. He lasted the entire game while Costa was off in about thirty.

Are we talking about the same match? The CL final? Where Ronaldo's penalty was the 4th goal in a 4-1 win in the 120th minute, that is hardly a winner at all.

And as far as that final is concerned, Ronaldo was piss poor - watched the whole thing, he did NOT show up, according to Henry's logic he shouldn't have celebrated the goal or the cup win he should have gone home immediately after the final whistle.

The third was important, but he scored the fourth, after about 120 minutes. The game was done and dusted by then.

For the most part I don't have a problem with Ronaldo. I don't have a problem with him yesterday, more with the director who focused on him more than anyone else after the goal. But at times he does appear awfully self centered. More than anything a few weeks ago, when Real won 9-1. After one of his team mates scored the eighth, he was the one to pick the ball up from the back of the net. Why on earth would you do that at 8-1? Because you fancy your chances of scoring another? That's just low.

I wouldn't call it low at all. The few guys at the very top have such a drive that it is unreal, that's what makes them tick. That kind of ambition and drive should be celebrated, not belittled.

At 8-1? Let the ball go... Let your opponents bring it back, let them stall for 20 seconds if they can. This is more than ambition and drive. This is just me-me-me.

Don't agree at all. We just have to agree on that!

Maybe it's just that I'm so fed up that we never, ever batter teams but I'd appreciate that level of wanting to score regardless of how large a lead you have.

Sick and tired of being 2-0 up and then just sitting back and inviting pressure for no apparent reason. Doing just 'enough' to win a match isn't entertaining at all, especially when it's obvious we could batter teams if we tried.

2-0 isn't like 8-1, though. And it's hard to overlook the distinct possibility it's not hunger for his team winning bigger but him using the chance to score another.

And why wouldn't you want any of your players obsessed with scoring to the point they still want another when the team has already comprehensively won the match?

*to be taken with a large scoop of salt

Madrid barca final

Ronaldo scores the winner

first team to win the cl in current format back to back

beats barca and messi in the final

breaks all sorts of goal records

job done, nothing more to achieve at real

...comes back to united ;)

(this wont happen but hey what is life without hope)

He could probably still become our all time top scorer if he came back this summer. On the other hand however we are not a retirement home so no thanks.

even if that happens, he wont be in the same tier with messi, maradona, pele and distefano

I don't mind them wanting another when the match is played. I find the idea of being the one to take the ball out of the back of the net at 8-1 exaggerated.

I think you mean the Forest game away in the treble season when we won 1-8 and Solskjaer came on as a sub and scored 4 in 12 minutes or something.
Yes that's it. I bet if he can score another 10 goals, he'd take it.

Agreed. He was quite decent yesterday, got an assist and played a big part in Kroos' goal as well.

I think you'll find that those two statements can in many cases be the same. As arrogant as he may be and as many goals as he may want for his individual glory, ambition and drive is basically the engine for it.

Oh his talent and error are indeed phenomenal.

It's funny that all that time back the majority felt Rooney was the bigger talent

Rooney arguably was. Have a look back at what he was doing during his breakthrough months. Maybe he was slightly more talented, if such a thing was quantifiable. But Ronaldo's application, discipline and dedication makes a huge amount of difference, I feel.

Did he have a go at Arbeloa for scoring a tap-in and not letting the ball roll to him instead?
