Ronaldo has taken 36!! Of his "trademark" free kicks in tournament football, and scored None !! I was amazed to hear during last nights ITVs commentary of the Portugal game.
Why doesn't Iniesta score more goals anyway, is it because he can hardly run?
<hides from Redwar>
Messi cannot change a game? This is a WUM. A decent one because we took you seriously until now but I think you should admit it now.
IMHO if you want to rate a footballer as one of the greatest he 's got to have some important characteristics.
- Showing up when it matters (WCs, EUROs, CHL semis and finals)
- Unusual playmaking abilities that change the game along with extraordinary dribbling that opens every defense.
Pele, Cruyff, Maradona have been called great because of their ability to produce this kind of football, meaning game-changing ability along woth skills, when all the eyes are on them.
Messi and Ronaldo are miracles in terms of consistensy, but they are like machines that stop when some serious shit is going on.
Ronaldo also lacks playmaking ability. He doen't bring his trammates in the game.
Let's see some other players. Zidane was also compared with the great ones. You surely understand the reason. He scored crucial goals, like the ones against Leverkusen and Brazil, and dominated one more WC final. Ronaldinho - although he had less good seasons than Messi and Ronaldo, he produced some of his greatest football against big teams. Although he had only 3-4 good seasons, people dared to compare him to the great ones 10 years ago. And yes, you knew he could change any game. Any fecking game.
So, that's my point. Can Ronaldo and Messi make you believe that they can change ANY fecking game? I think not.
Iniesta though...
And you wonder why people laugh at you...He has proven he cannot chanfe ANY game.
I m not waiting Messi to produce miracles for Argentina. He has let me down so many times that I don't really see him as mentally strong enough.
The game is about scoring and creating goals. Everything else is a means to this end.
Ronaldo and particularly Messi are outstanding at this. Why should playmaking rank higher than actually scoring feck loads of goals? In any case Messi is also the best playmaker of all time and regularly turns up in the biggest games. He's lead Argentina to two consecutive finals where he was their best player.
Did you miss the bit about creating goals? Zidane obviously did that and was a top draw playmaker who regularly impacted games.
Yeah I were amazed, I mean give friggin Danny Murphy 36 I'm sure he would score a few, tou would think he would have scored a few spawny ones !!You were amazed? he has been terrible at free kicks for a real long time now, honestly its incredible that bale doesn't take them all for Madrid at this point, I think he has scored one in about three seasons or something ridiculous.

Why?
Any discussion how Ronaldo stacks up against his peers is very much relevant to the topic.
You're on the Iniesta Bandwagonn as well is it?
Yes that sounds spot on.I think his technique must be impossible, remember di maria taking corners for united they all looked terrible but I always had the impression if he caught one right we would see the greatest delivery in the history of the game. Ronaldo could probably smash in free kicks like the Eric dier one but he is trying to repeat his one against Portsmouth or something.
I made a comment a couple of pages ago to get this topic back onto Ronaldo performances but just checked in to see walls of text discussing other players. Infractions will be given our shortly for any posts that haven't been deleted.
Anyone who has derailed this thread with talk of Maradona, Messi, Suarez over the last page or two would be wise to delete their posts before a flurry of infractions for thread derailing are handed out.
I do understand this but when someone says something like Ronaldo never delivers in big games its pretty much impossible to make a reasoned argument without comparing him to other big players big game contributions. When you are talking about one of the greats of all time like Ronaldo you can't look at him without looking at the context of where he stands in the game. Otherwise the thread would just be people saying he was okay today, he was good today or he was bad today, it would be the most boring thread of all time.
There's actually a separate thread for that as well.

I think he's hitting good form. Last night his movement and physical presence were excellent, just finishing was off, it was a bad day at the office I suppose.
Portugal are playing quite well and are good to watch. May surprise some favourites, IMO, if they reach the knock-out stages, that is.
He pretty much did everything except score. Good performance that was missing the goal to cap it off with a win.I think he's hitting good form. Last night his movement and physical presence were excellent, just finishing was off, it was a bad day at the office I suppose.

That's not just any game, you are basically expecting him to dominate EVERY game, that's not the same, and nobody can ever do that.

He would have probably scored from the chance that was taken away from him when he won the penalty though.
He patently didn't.
He had loads of decent attempts at scoring from decent service and failed, fine, that can happen to any forward.
He did well to win a penalty with his amazing movement, but then proceeded to "bottle" it when it mattered -- a theme more common than many will admit with regard to his penalty-taking, one of his (still, rightfully) most praised attributes. Again, sure, that can happen to any legendary player as well.
But other than that, what exactly is he supposed to have done that encompasses this "everything" you mention? Did he create a chance for a team mate? Did he press the Austrian backline which was fumbling its way out from the back repeatedly in the 1st half, at all? Apart from that one great long range shot, which somewhat luckily fell his way (but he reacted fastest to) did he do anything dangerous without requiring his team to set it up?
This isn't me telling you off or anything. But, I think you're responding to a poor argument from BANNED poster, Redwar. Everyone has been quite strongly urged to move on with the thread as it's original specific purpose.
That simply shows Neymar hasn't got it in him, yet, to shine at an extremely high level throughout a whole season. These things people say that Neymar was brilliant for a few matches when Messi was out and then claim he is better than Ronaldo is laughable.
This is funny because around 2007 when Ronaldo wasn't yet a goalscoring beast there was a poster on a forum I was a regular on who had a signature of Ronaldo being Lampard on turbo charge which on hindsight I find is a pretty accurate description. That combination of pace and his off the ball runs is what enables him to miss 2-3 chances and still score a brace in any given match.
Neymar's whoscore rating was 8.4 this season.
.03 lower than Messi and .42 better than suarez. He still had a very good season imo and I would rate him higher than Current Ronaldo.
