Cristiano Ronaldo - Performances (wums will be thread banned)

Actually, they have very good midfielders and Pepe has been great, one of the best defenders in the tournament. They are a bit unlucky though because A. Gomes has suffeerd from injuries and Moutinho hasn't been in good form. Still, they have good options in midfield. If Pepe plays in the final, they stand a chance to win it. Without Pepe it would be nearly impossible though.

There's too little creativity though - wide players are a little rubbish and their fullbacks aren't good enough either. Agree about central midfield and Pepe.

To summarize:

-Ronaldo has had three assists and three goals so far in the euros.

-He assisted and scored two good goals in the draw vs Iceland to prevent elimination in the group stages.

-His saved shot in extra time rebounded and became a tap in for his teammate and they progressed yet again.

-He scored the required penalty after extra time vs Poland.

-He scored a great header in a nothing match up to that point and with luck he assisted Nani to end the game within a space of three minutes.

He has passed that bottle-o-meter test to say the very least.

I endorse this post.

Ronaldo is carrying this Portugal team? You mean in this tournament, or always? He carried them straight out of the World Cup in the group stages just a couple of years ago, in that case. All hail king Ronaldo. Always turning up when the moment calls for it.

Their draw in the last game was completely irrelevant, in reality. It's amazing that it's being painted as Ronaldo saving them at the end. They finished on 3 points. If they'd have lost, they'd still have qualified behind Iceland and Hungary. They sneaked through with Ronaldo having had no meaningful impact.

Since then he has been very decisive though. A really dazzling performance in the final followed up by him retiring on a high would make for a beautiful contrast to Messi wimping out after his loss in the final.

If the lost against hungry they would be out. What are you talking about? They would have 2 points

Quite like his reaction to the ball boy sneaking in for the team photo.

He'll have a great summer holiday regardless, he has loads of models waiting for him on some yacht.

Stop it - he's an arrogant twat; everyone knows that due to his facial expressions on the pitch. The fact that teammates tell a different story, as do supporters who have actually met him, and incidents such as this, mean next to nothing when he looks like a petulant child on the pitch (which he does, in fairness)

funny how you mocking someone who suggested Portugal could reach the final has turned out. Looks like you were completely and utterly wrong and others were right.
Wow you were really waiting to call me out on this one, within 30 mins of full time too :D. I wasn't mocking btw I was shocked that's all.

I was wrong, but even if I went back in time I would still make the same prediction, they have had a favourable draw and have been lucky. I haven't seen any improvement in Portugal during the knockouts and imo are still a poor/average side who will get shown up by either Germany or France.

Funny thing is you sarcastically say this in reply to a picture which, if you look closely, shows him standing on his tiptoes (again)

He is arrogant. Let's not kid ourselves here. Thing is, would he be half the player he is today if he wasn't? That will to be the best and the belief that he is the best is what keeps him going and striving to improve. Not many have that in them.

So does Rui Patricio and Nani.

I'm not sure how anyone can think Ronaldo has had a good tournament. Portugal has literally won 1 single game in regular time and only 1 other game at all. That's ridiculous. Any other tournament they would have been eliminated in the group stages. If they get to the final by drawing all their games and their best player misses that many chances he didn't lead them there. It's been a terrible euros so far, and the fact that Portugal has had to beat, or draw, Austria, Hungary, Iceland, Croatia, Poland, and Wales to get to the final is actually pretty remarkable.

No they wouldn't. Albania or Turkey would instead with 3 points.

Are people saying he isn't an egotistical, arrogant moaner?

Fair play though, hell of a header against us last night. I knew it was a goal half way into his jump.

I am starting to understand the comments of wanting Ronaldo over Messi in a team. I am not comparing the two here in terms of skill. My point is, if you were to be lead by one of these players if your team was the underdogs who would it be: Ronaldo, Messi, Saurez or Neymar. You can argue all day who is more skillful and gets things done but I would definitely chose Ronaldo.

In passion, hardwork, ethic and leadership I have a huge hard on for Ronnie. I have said this before but to me, all the players I mentioned above are natural borns. They were kind of destined to be great. Had superior brains or something. Ronaldo is like a fecking human who has gone full throttle hulk mode to compete with the magicians who have natural skill.

I think the point here is not that he has had a good tournament (although after yesterday, it seems like he is turning up and at the right time as well!)

The point I see being made here is that he has soaked in all the pressure without completely cracking. He had some bad games. Some struggles. Some draws but he has kept pushing and now that he's back in form he's set his team in a good position

Stop it with the 2nd best player crap, he's clearly odds on for the Balon D'or.

Best player in the world!!

He is arrogant, no doubt about that. Being arrogant, however, does not make you a prick, as many on here would suggest. That would mean that pretty much anyone young and ambitious is arrogant, as those trademarks can be recognized amongst many athletes and people who have succeeded at a young age. As you say, it fuels him, but it doesn't necessarily make him an arse.

This topic really doesn't bring out the best in you.

Someone used his shot being saved and Quaresma scoring as something important he did? Well, he really should have been squaring it to Quaresma for a tap in anyway. And that goal was all about Nani's pass.

That was actually a shot

I've known enough twats (and been been a perennial douche myself) on the pitch who are perfectly decent blokes off it, to have learned that how you behave when you're playing a competitive game of football has little to do with what you're like as a person the rest of the time. So you won't get any objections from me. The little tidbits I've read and seen that gives actual clues to what kind of person he is, gives me the impression that he's a pretty light hearted guy overall.

Of course, his antics (and his comments in the heat of the moment after the Iceland game) will see to it that most people will judge him to be a proper idiot. Then again, I don't suppose it much matters to him :)

We need Brwned to make another thread for the Final. Ronaldo vs Griezmann?

Absurd as it is to call someone arrogant because they are standing on their toes - almost half the backline in that picture is on their toes. Are they all vain?

Perhaps we should all stop tip toeing :lol:

Bale is a great player, but he's not a Messi or a Ronaldo or a Suarez. Those guys are elite level. They always turn up when the moment calls for it. You could say Bale is carrying that Wales team... but then again Ronaldo is carrying this Portugal team too.

For argument's sakes I'm not gonna compare who is the better player in general but Ronaldo has not really been the better player in this tournament.

Wales have overachieved, whilst Portugal has underachieved. Ronaldo dealing the finishing blow is a class act by a great player but it doesn't make him better; his supporting players have helped him get there. Coincidently, his supporting players being much better than the Wales outfit.

Take Bale out of the Wales team and Ronaldo out from the Portugal team, who has the better team and on paper would most likely win?

Ramsey was massively missed as the only other player of note for Wales, who could run up and down WITH quality.

Bale aside, Wales had no pace, no penetration and no creativty (although props to Allen imo for his performances; didn't hide from the physical battle and always tried to be progressive with the ball even if limited) to counter Portugal's players.

How have Portugal underachieved?

This is their first final in like 12 years. Sure you could say they were disappointing in the group stages, but rules are rules and their performances were solid enough to gain a place in the knockouts. Before the Wales game, Portugal failed to win a match in 90 minutes... but they also never lost.

Either way, Ronaldo will want this. He will show up in the final and make sure he wins it. Everyone hoping for France to win is embarrassing. Ronaldo is *arguably* the greatest player of his generation. He deserves to win a trophy like this. Everyone wanted the same for Messi.

Being a Portuguese , I can easily admit that he has not been himself this tournament and his performances have been average( Definitely not our best or most consistent player this tournament). He has scored some important goals and settled the nerves in the shootout VS Poland, the goal in the Croatia game was definitely not down to him, but to Sanches if anyone. Even being average, he has managed to score 3 and assist 3, imagine he was any decent. I fully expect him to step up in the final and push Portugal over the finish line!

History will be kinder to Ronaldo than Maradona because one thing time doesn't get rid of is stats.. And in 50 years time when all the people who watched him play are dead stats are all people will go on (and on pure stats he looks the greatest footballer ever). Also due to the era he was lucky to play in (TV catching everything he does) his highlight reels will always be on YouTube (or whatever it is then) to show people who have never saw him play.

Paul Parker (ex United) ain't much of a fan of the Preening Portuguese is he??

Eurosport
Ronaldo is playing like Andy Carroll: the only thing poorer than Portugal is the tournament itself

Just a rich Andy Caroll, your just a rich Andy Caroll!!!:lol::lol::wenger:

Poor Paul Parker seems to hate everyone.. No wonder MUTV binned him. He seems extremely bitter against modern footballer and footballers.. Maybe because he just missed out on the Sky generation and the money the players enjoy in the game now..

He is 31 years old and against all odds became an integral part to Portugal going all the way to the Finals of a very prestigious tournamen. IfPortugal win Sunday enough for Ballon D Or?
