I am actually in the Messi camp but your comment is way off - I'm 26 and for the last what seems like 10 years of my life people have been debating if CR7 or Messi is better. There are lots of arguments for Ronaldo and Messi.

In 20 years when ppl look back at their generation, they will be the two talked about as being the best.

In the same way when we look back at the 80s, Platini and Maradona are talked about as the best?

Ronaldo scored, but Silva...that guy scored a hat-trick in 37 minutes.
Who is that guy?

Enough shenanigans here now.

Got a hat trick today and is now on 350 league goals in his career. 7 goals in 10 games this season and a career total of 560 goals.

Considering he just won the Champions League and European Championship I would put him as favorite for the Ballon d'Or.

Imagine if he never left us... sigh. Seeing him score all these goals and win all those trophies with Real Madrid fills me with envy and hatred. That should be us.

I know it's a bit pathetic to not move on after all these years, but its hard when you know we will never find another player like him. He really was something else.

He just hasn't been the best player in the world. You can throw any statistic you like but he just hasn't been.

We'll see, with that trophy haul and amount of goals he's got a good shot whether people like it or not.

Of course he has a shot and rightly so, it's a truly remarkable year for him and I don't think anyone will ever undermine the achievements. The best player should be the one who stood out the most consistently and was the best to watch in the majority of games he played.

If there was a " how the feck did you still score so many goals despite being a largely peripheral figure in most of your teams games this year" award then he'd get it.

Considering the trophy haul I'm with SirAF but I'm also with everyone else saying he's not been near the best in the world this past year.

I'm not sure what's sadder, someone obsessed with personal glory winning an individual award in a team sport or a team winning trophies having more of an effect on whether an individual wins an individuals award than his own performances.

Florentino would be incredibly mad to give him more than 3 years in the new contract. He's been incredibly poor this season so far, barring the Alaves' game. At this point he's actually hurting RM and we know Zidane's not gonna sit him.

He's a shadow of the player he was, would be surprised if he was still in the Real team in 12 months.

A couple of 3/4 goal matches per season doesn't make him a great player.

He's so past it I wouldn't be surprised if we had him to replace Ibra as that seems to be our strategy these days, Galactico >everything else

Haven't been watching him, what has been so bad about his play? is it physical? He does seem to be still scoring, so surprised to hear the above.

think playing on that injury in the euros might have finished him at the very highest level.

Yesterday he looked really, really bad. I'd say Rooney-level bad, there was a resemblance really.

Was thinking if he's able to reinvent his game, you know, Messi-esque style, dropping back a bit, doing some playmaking and shit but I came to a conclusion that he can't do it.

I think he is and he really should be. Suarez is right, it's a popularity competition to some extend and there are no players bigger than Messi and CR right now, so one of the two will get it either way and since Ronnie's teams have won the more prestigious trophies this year he should probably get it.

He doesn't have that in his locker. Physique and goal instinct are his traits. As the former starts to show hints of decline, the latter is affected, too. This Ballon d'Or is likely going to be the last one for him to bag in his career.

Yup, was exactly my conclusion too.

Spot on. I also think that this will be the last time he is contesting the Ballon d'Or with a serious claim - so hopefully he'll get his last top accolade. 4 golden balls would really be something - especially while competing against you know who.
