CSKA Moscow vs. Manchester United

Can we afford to loose or draw that match? What are the stakes in giving the CSKA a point or more?

A trip to Russia to play on an artificial pitch is worth possibly dropping a couple points imo. Especially with Liverpool at the weekend.

O'Shea Brown Evans Fabio
Park Scholes Gibson Nani
Owen Macheda

I'd still fancy that team to win tbh.

Giggs set to miss Moscow

Ryan Giggs is likely to sit out United's Champions League trip to CSKA Moscow.

The veteran midfielder shone again in the Reds' narrow win over Bolton Wanderers, but is unlikely to travel to Russia after picking up a minor injury towards the end of the 2-1 triumph.

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed Giggs' likely absence to MUTV, and also ran through a list of probables, possibles and absentees for the return to the Luzhniki Stadium, as well as Sunday's subsequent trip to Liverpool.

"Ryan Giggs has got a knock and is a doubt for Wednesday," said the manager. "Patrice Evra we'll have to look at tomorrow, he may be a doubt.

"Berbatov, I think, will be alright. Wayne Rooney, we've got to try to get ready for Wednesday. We'll see him on Sunday. I'm hopeful Vidic will be alright, but he'll certainly be ready for the Liverpool game."

5:30 kick off is a bit of a pain in the arse, I'll have to try and leave work early.

I agree with cw1984 above, the match against the dippers is more important.

Good, put out a few first teamers but mostly fringe, not worth getting injured on a plastic pitch.

Wouldn't be at all surprised to see something like this

Giggs i would of expected to miss this one out with Liverpool in mind. Best not to risk an playersw with the Liverpool game coming up. i doubt Oberton will be in the squad.

I wouldn't.

Actually upon reflection i'd probably play Kiko up top on his own, flanked by the 2 wingers and get an extra body in midfield.

Yea should be, somebody's blog on the official site said he was flying out with the squad at lunch time today, so we should be able to see who flew soon at least.

Or now!

Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Patrice Evra, Ji-sung Park and Darren Fletcher will all miss United's Champions League trip to CSKA Moscow.

The five players - many of them probable starters in Sir Alex Ferguson's strongest line-up - were absent from the squad flying out of Manchester on Monday afternoon.

Sir Alex confirmed Giggs' likely absence on Saturday, after the veteran midfielder had shone once again in the Reds' 2-1 win over Bolton Wanderers.

"Ryan Giggs has got a knock and is a doubt," Sir Alex told MUTV, post-match. "We've got to try and get Wayne Rooney ready for Wednesday but we'll see him on Sunday (against Liverpool). We'll have to look at Patrice Evra, he may be a doubt."

Other probables, possibles and absentees mentioned by the United manager were Dimitar Berbatov - "I think he will be all right" - and Nemanja Vidic - "I'm hopeful Vidic will be all right, but he'll certainly be ready for the Liverpool game." Both have flown to Russia.

The full United squad to face CSKA Moscow on 21 October is as follows: Van der Sar, Kuszczak, Foster; Neville, Rafael, O'Shea, Ferdinand, Vidic, Brown, J Evans, Fabio; Valencia, Scholes, Carrick, C Evans, Anderson, Nani; Owen, Berbatov, Macheda, Welbeck

Cory Evans included :)

Cory Evans included :)

I think the starting line up will almost certainly be:

VDS
O'Shea Ferdinand Vidic Evra
Valencia Scholes Carrick Nani
Berbatov Owen

3-1, Berba, Owen and Nani

Edit: thought I'd seen Fletcher in the squad, obviously seeing things.

I really wouldn't mind us giving a few of the young players a go, and resting the more important players for the scouse game. A draw would be a good result here.

Totally agree, long haul flight, plastic pitch, would be happy to see some key players left out to be fresh for Sunday.

I agree. Fergie almost always play 4-5-1 for aways games probably ever since veron.

Am I the only one completely unsure about the idea of playing Owen up front on his own. We looked quite ineffective with him on his own for large parts of the Wolves match at home, and this is the champions league in Moscow. I always thought he never looked great on his own even in his peak as he always needed some sort of a presence next. Rather see one of Macheda or Welbeck or stick to Berbatov play as well.

I think it would be very unfair to start him upfront alone. If Berba needs a rest, Kiko can partner Owen.

I would pick this team. Strong and experienced in defence with a formidable attack. Plenty of options on the bench to change things if needed.

Don't know if this is true, but I just talked to a friend of mine, and he told me that several games in Russia were played in snow over the weekend. Can someone tell me if this is true please?

Vidic, Giggs, Fletcher, Evra, Rooney, and possibly Ferdinand will all miss this to try and make sure they're fully fit for Liverpool I reckon. We need to bury them and probably put them out of the race already :)

I cant see either twin starting if we got the other fullbacks ready.

I heard they have an artificial pitch to counter these kinda problems.

no your right. I know that if we play a five we could have someone to support owen but it's not the same and I think we should look to protect him.

So I hope we see him with a partner up top

Can not risk any injuries but this is the champions league, i doubt it will be a really weak team.
