The longer this goes on the weaker the club's negotiating position gets regardless of whether he speaks or doesn't. Whether that is down to him refusing to sign a new deal that has been put on the table before now or the club letting it get to this point with a bizarre extension policy (or indeed a combination of the two) we'll probably never know.
if he is supposedly saying his goodbyes etc then a fee would have been sorted by now

He left his home because he wanted to progress his career. That was a smart choice. Now he has the chance to move back home and progress his career further. That would probably be a smart choice too.

Basically he's now in a situation where he can have the best of both worlds, so why wouldn't he take that opportunity?

That's all completely understandable, but it doesn't mean that we have to be chuffed for him and his family and Spain and whoever else is going to benefit from this.

The bottom line is that Manchester United isn't going to benefit on the pitch from this.

This is a slightly weird situation in that there are actually very few reasons for him not to leave for Madrid. Football, family and lifestyle all point to Madrid being a better choice for DDG. In fact the only real reason he has for staying would be if he decided to make money his main priority, which we'd usually call greed in different circumstances.

So yeah, don't really get why there'd be that much bitterness from us given that it's hard to come up with a strong argument for him to stay. Sucks for us but such is life I guess.

Oh yeah, we should definitely be unhappy, it sucks for us. That doesn't mean we should be bitter towards DDG though, he's only made what was very obviously the best choice for himself. What do people expect from the guy?

So this makes two World XI players we've sold to Madrid. That's no way to remain at the top.

Should we keep them against their will? That's no way to get to the top either. People forget, when we sold Ronaldo we were the better side. He just had a massive hard on for them, and had done since he was a kid.

EDIT: Perhaps i could phrase that better, but meh.

What can you do when these Spanish/Portuguese/Latin American players see that circus club as the pinnacle? That won't ever change.

Move on. Now watch him get booed by his own fans after one mistake.

Maybe we can infiltrate our own designated booers into his first match at Madrid. Unnerve him, make him cry like a baby.

Job for the Herrera imposters.

He can and may, I am not stopping him. I just think it's shitty of him to do it with only a year remaining on the contract, when we stood by him when the going was tough. This leaves us without any fecking leverage; De Gea and Real have us by the balls in this. When you pay an exorbitant sum for a very raw player and help him develop into one of the top 3 players in this position, then you have a right to be pissed when he decides to bolt at the first fecking opportunity that presents him. The worst part is that we may get lesser than what we paid for him 4 years ago. And it's not that this is his last chance and Real won't come back for him in a couple of years; this is the club that paid 85m fecking pounds for Gareth Bale.

And I don't understand what you mean by, "he has a chance to extend his career further". His career is advancing as good as he can expect playing at United. He is the first choice keeper at one of the top clubs in the world; loved by the fans, players and the management staff; getting paid more than any other keeper. Also, being at United doesn't change his status as a Spanish number one.

More than De Gea, I am mad at our situation. We fecking finished an abysmal 4th and now our best and probably the only legitimate world class player will be leaving for peanuts. We could have done without the distraction of finding a replacement keeper when we had other more pressing concerns.

It's a shit situation. I hate this summer already..

i froze your tears and made a dagger,
and stabbed it in my cock forever.
it stays there like excalibur,
are you my arthur?
say you are.

take this cool dark steeled blade,
steal it, sheath it, in your lake.
i’d drown with you to be together.
must you leave? cos i need heaven

did you get the double meanings?

Being disappointed in losing a player of his caliber and being perturbed that he didn't want to stay here =/= bitterness.

I'm gutted that he is off, but its perfectly understandable. How people can wish him to have a shocker in Madrid is beyond me. He appears to be a really good guy and he's not exactly signing for bloody Liverpool or any other rival. All the best Dave.

Honestly, I saw this happening a few years ago.

We should cut down on Spanish/Latin transfers since the inevitable happens if they become world class players. Unless we're buying players in their prime from those clubs (e.g Di Maria).

We've been Real's bitches for quite some time. Beckham, RVN, DDG, Ronaldo etc

All of those are different situations. Only De Gea (if it goes through) will be down to us being the lesser side.

Pretty sure Sir Alex revealed that van Nistelrooy was after a 'Real Madrid clause' in his contract. And that this was the beginning of their falling out.

I hope his life is long and fulfilling, but I hope professionally that him and Real fail horribly.

If anyone thinks those voicing disgust on here are being over the top or extravagant, wait til the Madrid Derby next season. Atl. Madrid supporters will make this look like a love fest.

He's ambitious not stupid.

Also I find the Beckham deal pretty fishy TBH. Player starts acting out, forcing the manager to sell him and voila....he only wants to go to Real Madrid.

You needn't worry. You won't be spending any money on Lloris.
It's sort of admirable, how you still come out with this stuff with all the smug self-assurance of a cat in season. I still remember your insistence that Bale won't be sold to Real Madrid.

He was, but it wasn't due to us being unable to compete. I think his situation is more similar to Ronaldo, except that after playing hardball and keeping RVN we eventually decided to move him on ourselves anyway.

EDIT: Or was it? I can't remember when this was, if it was around 2005 then yeah, fair enough.

You've kind of answered your own question about "career progression". He's leaving a club who finished 4th and weren't in the CL for a club who did (and will continue to) challenge for La Liga and the CL. I'm not sure anyone could argue that this Real teams isn't miles ahead of us atm. If you want to win trophies then they're a better bet right now, so it would probably be a smart career move.

Also, they're probably a more attractive club generally, especially if you are actually a Madrid born Spaniard.

Second time now he's shown his back to a club and fans that has been nothing but fantastic towards him throughout his career. *childish bitterness removed*

Second time now he's shown his back to a club and fans that has been nothing but fantastic towards him throughout his career. Fantastic goalkeeper but a cnut of humanbeing.

Come on now, he's leaving for a bigger club. That's not exactly turning his back. It's great that the fans were supportive but that doesn't mean he has to stay there for the rest of his career.

The extent of my bitterness will depend on the price we get for him. If it's respectable then it won't be too great (quite why being at the most arrogant and volatile club in the world is such a pull eludes me however), although I think we're going to get shafted by his willingness to string us along with his contract.
