So what exactly happens to him now? Madrid could still end up getting their player for free next year, if DDG doesn't sign, which I guess means he doesn't play, which won't help his chances for the Euros next year

Should've sold him the moment they came in with anything around £20m and had time to get a proper replacement in before the season started.

I don't think he'll sign. I do think he'll play. Possibly not for a while, though, as I doubt he's anywhere near mentally in the right place.

There's no justification for freezing him out in favour of Romero, though. Unless LVG genuinely thinks Romero should be first choice for the season after this. Which I really hope he doesn't...

If this falls through is there any chance he could be pissed at Real for not pushing hard enough and if he has a good season with us he may reconsider leaving?

He'll play if he stays, Van Gaal said he would early in the window, and he has to be on form to win that starting spot in the Euros.

More likely Madrid land a transfer ban similar to Barcas(they're in similar murky water), and he can't be registered until Jan 2017, meaning he has 4 choices. Stay at United, join another club, join Madrid and go on loan, or join Madrid and sit on his arse for another year(like Aleix Vidal and Barcas signings this summer, though they only have a 6 month wait).

Actually, my mistake, if he joins Madrid on a bosman, and they have the ban, he'd only have a 6 month wait without being able to play from that summer he joins. Though that assumes we'd keep playing him after he signs a contract at another club. Don't think Van Gaal would do that, though Moyes did with Vidic.

Yeah probably. It would probably take us winning a couple of trophies to have any chance to convince him and we don't look ready to make a real challenge yet.

Would he need to inform us that he'd signed a pre-contract agreement with another club?

If he stays he plays. We won't shoot ourselves in the foot by playing Romero all season. Anyone who thinks otherwise is deluded and bitter.

Yes, I'm fairly sure it would have to be officially announced. Remember the pics of Vidic signing for Inter?

Imagine if you could keep signings secret... Three weeks later, after a bad run, BOOM, btw, Griezmann's* here.

*Insert whichever galactico or wonderkid you prefer.

I can't imagine he's too happy not playing thus far, and he'll likely be upset if the move doesn't go through. He'll likely play at some point but it isn't exactly as straightforward as you make it seem, though I wish/hope it is.

For his many faults, lack of direct access to Mendes isn't one of them.

Look at the article though, he slags us off something chronic. He mentions that we have evidence that we sent the documentation but then continues to put the blame squarely on us for not completing the transfer. The guy is a class A dickhead.

Wasn't the assumption with Pogba that he'd signed with Juve quite a long time before he left us but it was never announced?

It just strikes me as terribly unfair on the player. If we had some talented youngster, who'd agreed to join Chelsea, the fans would probably want him banned from training, let alone the first team.

Dave will probably now drive barefoot, in the direction of Dundee with a pile of Toblerone.......

I blame Bale for this...

If it's quite clear (and it should be) that United put in a good faith effort to get the deal done and Real screwed it up, De Gea has to put his head down and play. Otherwise he risks missing out on the starting job at the Euros. Madrid started negotiating today so they only have themselves to blame.

That was the rumour, but I'm not sure it'd be legal, but I'm not that knowledgeable of the intricacies of the business side.

The other option is, they could have discussed the transfer with him in January, and just not finalised things until right before they announced it.

I'm sure he will, given the chance. It'll be tricky though. Every hint of a mistake will be 'his mind's elsewhere'/'his heart's not in it'.

Quite possibly.

Ah, yes. Juventus are real sticklers for the law. ;)

Hilarious to wake up to such a mess but if any team has the pull to get this done it's Real.

I for one hope this goes through, so long as it means Navas comes this way.

If LVG had doubts about De Gea having his head in the right place before, I can't imagine this will help.

Navas would be a significant improvement over Romero.

I genuinely think van Gaal will not play him. Well, at least not until Romero costs us a few more points anyway and it becomes ridiculous.

Well they never came in with that offer so its not up to us. And we couldnt risk starting the season with him incase he left, it made sense to start with Romero.
