This.

If he doesn't want to stay at all, why play him? We are not a small time club who tend to get bullied by players.
Because we will get more points with him in goal than with Romero. If he still wants to go after another season then we can get a good replacement, but as it stands he is our best keeper by a distance and it would be small time not to play him out of pettiness. Cutting off our nose to spite our face.

Personally I'd call getting a transfer ban for illegal transfer activities 'an unmitigated disaster'. As well as being highly embarrassing.

As for Chelsea being 'effective' is this transfer window? Trololololololololol
We've made 6 signings this summer and depending on Romero v DDG, all 6 will be in the starting line up this season, 5 of which were signed before we went on pre season.
How much more efficient can we be? Is there anything wrong in acquiring who we need and spending the rest of the window asking about the availability of players who might want to come, and if they don't wouldn't effect us in a negative way since it would have been a 'bonus' signing?
No difference in Barcelona asking about Pogba et all.
It seems every non United fan believes the transfer nonsense that's spouted about us but most of our actual fans don't. It's a weird dynamic since you would think it would be the other way around

Maybe. But there's no guarantee he will give his all for us this season, and recreates last season form. His mind isn't here with us at all.

Real didn't.

There's no chance whatsoever they risked that much money AND their current first choice keeper on a deal that they had no intention of actually completing. It makes no sense at all, what if it had gone through?

It's a classic real life example of Henlon's razor.

Sorry for being pedantic and all... but I believe you mean Hanlon's Razor

"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity"

I never guessed that all those years I spent in Uni would finally pay off in real life... Well Done!

I also care about how the club handles its affairs off the pitch, I care about both equally as much. Of course performance on the pitch and general success is important, but we dropped a ball on this saga but managed to stand firm and not cave to the mighty Madrid once again, I am satisfied with that, and with making our stance clear. Thats my opinion anyways. Winning is great, but the manner in how we win, such as with kids from '92, is more important.
I just think it sounds like you've got an inferiority complex regarding Madrid and it seems to have affected your perspective. I'm basing that on you ranking our negotiations with that club ahead of our actual footballing achievements. Which is surely paramount?

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we didn't just fold and flog De Gea for a small fee but I'll take much more satisfaction from us beating Liverpool in the next league game than I did our reluctance to hand our best player to a rival club.

Other than being a model professional who has been told he needs to play to be picked for his country.

No surprise Mendes wants him to sign, he's probably missed out on a fair bit of money from De Gea not going. Might as well get himself some money out of a contract extension and then Madrid will have to pay more which again means more money for him I imagine.

Wasn't Mendes advising him to renew his contract last season too ?

EDIT : Yes, yes he was apparently :

“I am negotiating his contract renewal but we haven’t signed anything yet,” said Mendes.

“As of this moment, we will see what happens. We’re holding talks and at this moment, it seems he could continue with United, but as I say, we haven’t signed anything yet.”

Mendes stated last week that De Gea was happy to stay at United despite the club’s decision to sign the former Barcelona goalkeeper Víctor Valdés on a free transfer last month.

Just hope there's a decent buyout clause in the new one. Given De Gea's profile, and the length of the renewed deal, a fee greater than Buffon's seems pretty reasonable, if a bit unrealistic given the time remaining on his current deal. The negotiations, if any, might prove to be tricky for both United and the player.

If stuff like this and talk of his girlfriend leading him around is true you have to wonder if the guy really is a bit of a simpleton, and perhaps he really has been "confused" and unable to concentrate on football this whole time.

I still think that its the signing on bonus which Madrid may have agreed to give him if the deal doesn't go through and he signs on a free transfer. It makes no sense for a club to agree to pay money (damages) to a player for failing to complete his signing.
Weren't there similar rumors like this during the Neymar transfer.. About some money which needed to be paid by barca to him if they didn't complete his transfer or something.. My memory seems fuzzy about it..

Edit:Just read about it.. Apparently Barca negotiated such a clause with Santos,so different from this situation

Do you know how long it took him to make this decision? No one does. So maybe it was an easy chose or maybe it was difficult. Ultimately there are personal factors here but how do you know that it wasn't 0.000001% that made him decide he wanted to go Madrid? He will have no problem returning and hopefully LVG does what's right. You'd have loved Navas you lol. We'd bring him in and you wouldn't want to play him. De Gea will play and will sign a new contract and we'll see what happens. Btw Navas might not want to play for Madrid now but what's he going to do? What's Madrid going to do? Try and calm him down and he'll play. The drama has passed.

If he extends I'll be overjoyed then we can put a huge buy out clause in too £50 million or something.

I'd love it, LOVE it (Kevin Keegan style) if he now told Madrid to screw it, and he was done with them.

Even if that means he still wanted to go back to Spain, but went to Barca or Athletico instead.

To be fair, he's a young man with millions thrown at him and a model girlfriend, who we can safely assume is pushy.

If I'm his age with all that, I'd be a little confused over all this too.

He's a professional footballer.

Thats probably a safe assumption.

Yeah I could handle him going back to one of those two. The idea that Madrid just keep coming back for our players and taking them does my head in.

Maybe you should read what's being said rather than tarring everyone with that brush.

I'm sorry but I have for weeks and all the reasons are born out of small time pettiness.

There is no logical reason for the football manager not to play his best goalkeeper. The only possible reason is if we have a decent goalkeeper who would benefit from playing and the improvement of an extra year between the post warrants the points lost now. That's just not the case here

If you think excluding him to make him sign a new contract isn't petty then fair enough, I do.

So you think this was our fault, or even a ploy?
Saying it's someone's fault implies someone's done something wrong, and I don't think we have.
I don't believe either club's statement 100% frankly. And if we did stall the transfer cause we didn't want it then fine, nothing wrong with that. But it puts a player somewhere he doesn't want to be for another year to no one's gain. That's what I'm trying to say.
How? and why?

I presume you have read the statement released by United.

And how have we pissed of Real? unless you think we deliberately sent the documents at the nth hour so Madrid could not complete the transfer.
Well maybe not us on our own, seems like both sides messed about.

Well they didn't get their player for a change, I imagine they aren't overly impressed.

I'd imagine Dave is quite worried about playing at Old Trafford again, but this isn't Madrid. We support our players - no boos, ever.

And if you think this is black and white, then that's up to you.

This whole story beggars belief.

I don't think any of us will ever know what actually happened and how it got to the point that DDG may well sign a new contract with United.

I find it hard to believe Real got cold feet because the crowd sang Navas' name after 1 good performance.

It's all fecking strange.
