Di Maria Has Earned Start Against City

I think we should really stick to the same midfield/attack combination we have used in the last few weeks. If there are any injuries to that then Di Maria should come into the side then for sure.

Not impressive? He absolutely terrorised Villa at the weekend, him and Blind were fantastic. With regards to stats, we both know they don't tell the full story. Di Maria is coming on when teams are tired and has a lot more space, whilst Young only really loses the ball in situations where we're setup to deal with it. Di Maria gives the ball away carelessly and unnecessarily quite a lot, there's a reason he's got that reputation and Young hasn't.

In terms of giving City something to worry about, we've got plenty of threats including the Blind/Young partnership. Rooney in form, the threat of Fellaini and our direct approach into him, the Mata/Herrera/Valencia combinations which have been so effective as of late. They will have plenty to think about, I just don't understand why we'd risk playing into their hands and not being at optimum strength in areas where they specialise.

Terrorised Villa? Did any of his crosses even reach a target? I remember some similar Young performances from past seasons, specifically last season, where he was crucified for his blind crosses. Link up play is all well and good, but we're expecting results at the same time, and, for me, Young isn't doing enough in terms of creativity; and when there's a guy who is far superior going forward, I'd rather he start instead, especially, if he plays as he did in his cameo against Villa.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, and should be content with the fact that such a debate is even taking place. Props to Young for producing this argument. Still would like di Maria to start!

And this City side should be attacked, even Crystal Palace line up with a very attacking 3 behind the striker. We already have Fellaini to help out with defensive cover, surely there can be 3 players that are more attacking, we haven't been creating enough, all the dominance against Liverpool in the first half and we created one chance and scored and Liverpool created arguably a better chance for Lallana.

Young is severely lacking in end product, we need more from the wing. Alan Hutton was injured for 15 minutes, backed off Young for 45 minutes, mostly marking both the Blind and the Young, and still there was nothing to show for his efforts. Di Maria's cross was behind Rooney, but still put in an area where our forwards actually are, and with the quality we have that's sometimes all you need to get an assist. That fact makes Young's stats this season all the more damning.

Di Maria was creating everything for us in a very good first half against Arsenal, a fact that has been lost after his idiotic sending off. He has had his warning by being benched, but the difference in quality is just so much that we have to include him and go for the jugular against City.

If it ain't broke dont fix it.

There's no reason we should change our team at all. The team is clicking now so let's keep it that way.

He deserves to. But atm our lineup is fine just the way it is. He can come on in the second half.

This this this this this. Why would we change anything? We're on a roll. Same team that beat Spurs, Pool and Villa. No unforced changes until we fail to win.

Yep. That ashley young Character gives us nothing going forward.

There's a huge difference in Ashley Young today and the one against Villa, he's scrapped the "cross into dangerous areas" mantra and actually crossing directly to players. Superb stuff.

Di Maria will have to make do with the bench with Smashley in this sort of form.

fecking love smashley. @Empire must be wondering how we kept him and sold Kagawa.

 Twiggy your obsession with me is worrying!

Why don't you go and make another 'Is David Moyes vindicated thread?', the last one closed so quickly I didn't have a chance to laugh at it! Whilst you were trying to draw comparisons with Moyes, I was telling you and others that were losing faith how Louis van Gaal is an excellent teacher and he will improve our players, he has got Young and Fellaini performing, he would have done it with Kagawa and Cleverely and he will do it next season with Angel di Maria.

I still maintain had David Moyes remained our manager Ashley Young wouldn't be good enough for him, Moyes would need one of the best wingers in the world to do what we did to City, I'm not sure why you don't see that?

Edit - I also love how every time you watch Young play you think of a poster on red cafe, I never think of you! Don't you think something is wrong there?

Double Edit - Interviewer to Young - 'how have you got your career going again', Young replied 'I just listened to the manager and did what he said'. Excellent timing there Young, as Louis van Gaal says 'if the players do as I say we shall win'.

Yawn. I've never doubted LVG. You could learn a thing or two from me about supporting players Empire lad.

Had you been Ed Woodward then Moyes would still be in charge! Why on earth would I learn from that? I am of the opinion the manager should always look to improve the selection, the winger position is no exception to this, if we can sign Depay I say sign Depay.

If the manager can do this with Young imagine what he could do if he had a player of Robben or Bale's quality on the wing. I understand Young is the level of player you aspire to, like your friend David Moyes, however I still want the club to improve. I support Valencia but I want a new right back in the summer, with Young it is no different, our ambition should not be to forever challenge for top four!

This is the manager we are talking about my friend.

I'm only messing you softie, just always remember you quoting me saying I like young and he will win us points. You overly verbose types need knocking down a peg or two sometimes :p

He's way worse than Mata and Young currently. Also was the worst of the subs. He seemed uninteresed and only thing he was doing were shots. Very shit shots.

I don't know, some of his passing was good and was a menace with his pace, can't fault anyone today at all really, great team performance.

You haven't knocked me down a peg considering my argument as supported by Young is that the manager has built a team that can perform. Those arguments where made when David Moyes was manager, I have said had he still been manager Young would not have done that to City.

You still haven't addressed this point, I'm waiting…

Look at the netherlands squad on paper and look at what it achieved in the world cup. Now take Louis van Gaal out of the equation and tell me what it would have done? We are talking about a guy that can get players that aren't quite United quality performing.

Hazard, Sanchez, Sterling, Silva, Young. Spot the odd one out, you seem to be undervaluing the work of the manager.

Even Dortmund have Reus, Bayern Robben, Barcelona Neymar, Real Madrid Ronaldo.

You honestly think Young is that quality? And if the answer is no then you shall understand why I wanted him replaced.

He is way to direct for the system we’re using.

Yes, he forces shots, like there are many players in front of him, he won't create the movement, the feints to create space for him to shoot. He's a bit thick when it comes to shooting whereas when he decides to pass the ball, you can see he is so good at it.

Correct decision not to start him today. He played alright when he did come on though.

Young will continue playing until he has a poor performance, at which point AdM will probably reclaim a starting role.

Can't believe people wanted him dropped. He has more than earned his spot. He was top class today.

Di Maria is direct which can be great on the counter, but too often he tries to shoot when its not the greatest position. In fact, I really think his shot from outside the box lacks power. It always screws wide or fizzles to the keeper yet he keeps trying it.

Im glad Young (and mata) are keeping Di Maria out the team as its helping our system and balance. Di Maria hasnt earned a start but hes given a chance to come of the bench and help us which, whilst not ideal for a 60m man, isnt the worst thing either for Manchester United.

Impossible to drop Young at the minute and that's coming from one of his biggest critics.

Been a revelation last few games now our system is sorted.

Actually, he has been good all year, but now we seem settled he's been fantastic.

This was the first game in a while where I thought Di Maria at least made a positive impact when he came on. I felt once we went 2-1 up that he would be a good player to introduce for Mata - a bit more energy, and the ability to run at City's CBs, who always look like they have a mistake or two in them.

Still though, he is some way off of displacing Young, Fellaini or Mata.

This thread had always confused me.

Young > Di Maria every game for now on until the former hits a rough patch.
