Europa league

The misery in here:lol:
You should beat Wolfsburg. Their 'home record' is just pure coincidence I think, their stadium is as boring as the city and their support is shit. Hardly a fortress or a tough away match and Bayern just destroyed them a few weeks back there in the cup. Since De Bruyne left they're bang average, they just got lucky in Moscow and weren't convincing in their win over PSV as well. They had one really good match in the cl and that was the first game against CSKA.
If you don't manage to win against Wolfsburg there's no point in staying in the competition anyway. And the 'side effects' of the EL are exaggerated as well, a few more matches on Thursday instead on Wednesday/Tuesday, that's it.

I respectfully but totally disagree with the bolded part. There was exactly one of those home matches where they got lucky and won instead of drawing, and that was recently against Leverkusen. There were even some matches they drew where they would have deserved a win.
Moreover, Wolfsburg is living proof how little a great stadium or support influences the outcome of a game.

I expect a tough game for United and a draw so it'll depend on PSV and CSKA.

I'm not sure how being unbeaten in 29 home league games and only losing 3 from 41 in all competitions can be seen as "coincidence"

Bang average is exactly what we struggle against.

How did PSV look impressive yesterday? They were very poor, we just couldn't finish.

Well, I meant impressive for a Dutch side in 2015 that just has to win, at home, against a Russian side that literally concedes every single CL game (30 in a row or something for Akinfeev, right?).

I thought they moved the ball neatly enough and their CB pairing is more solid than the Dutch sides normally offer these days. Guardado and Propper are clever CMs. Pereiro has lots to offer, too. No idea why he didn't start and the awful Locadia did, but if they correct that (or Lestienne comes back) I could see them offering a bit more threat.

I'm looking forward to this. It's the only trophy we haven't won. It's also a good chance to get a CL spot if we can't get it in teh league.

Does anyone know what will happen with the CL spot if the Europa League Winners qualify directly from their domestic League?

It goes back into the regular system. The champion of one of the smaller leagues gets a fixed spot in the group stages instead of going into the qualifiers. I think it's the champion of the 13th placed country in UEFA's 5 year ranking, not 100% sure though.

Thank you!

Braga eliminated Sion yesterday and now Fenerbahce are dumping out Lokomotiv Moscow after a 2-0 win in Turkey and a 1-1 draw in Moscow with 2 minutes to go.

so does anyone know anything about the European minnows we have drawn in the next round?

I dont know much about them but Ive heard they used to be a big team a few decades ago and that its a pretty dodgy city so the Euroawayers should beware :D

I believe that if they don't win a treble this season, next year will be their year, la

First time we've faced them in Europe. Was always hoping we'd get them in the CL but this will do.

Going by our game vs Liverpool at Anfield it could be a tough game. But so far, LVG has a fantastic record against Liverpool.

Europa League round of 16 draw

Shakhtar Donetsk v Anderlecht

Basel v Sevilla

Villarreal v Bayer Leverkusen

Athletic Bilbao v Valencia

Liverpool v Manchester United

Sparta Prague v Lazio

Borussia Dortmund v Tottenham

Fenerbahce v Braga

Some great games there.

The master plan of dropping out of the CL in order to be able to face Liverpool in Europe is bearing fruit!

tbh I'm surprised this thread wasn't bumped after we got knocked out by wolfsburg.

that said, strange feeling to draw liverpool in europe. double edged sword, as if we get knocked out here we'll never hear the end of it.

Europa league should be a big priority for us. No reason to not take it seriously it's a good trophy and get's champions league qualification.

4 out of 4 against Liverpool. Not even LVG can feck this up.

1-1 draw at Anfield and 2-0 win at OT.

The usual excuse for early kick offs has been the reduced opportunity for drinking and the better means to quell trouble. Parking the game at the height of rush hour, with the pubs having been open all day, and an early Thursday night would seem to be a totally stupid idea. Forces fans to take extra time off work if only to breakthrough the rush hour, which just shows again how removed football is from the people who make the atmosphere but only serves TV audiences.

As to the game and given our consistency of injuries per game, if we have have any youth players left we should win both ties.

what do you make of this , second leg is set for 6pm !!!!! kick off

http://www.manchestereveningnews.co...chester-united-10957160#ICID=sharebar_twitter

Its awful news. 6pm on a weeknight which happens to be St Patricks day is horrendous planning for the fans.

Club have asked UEFA to change the time to a later kick off

I dont know why they have this stupid early time slot anyway - all European games should be at 7:45pm

http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...-kick-off-with-liverpool-to-8pm-a6899806.html

It's all for tv and nothing else. 2 matches on one evening can be televised live. It's not so bad in the rest of Europe as the early match is at 7pm or later, not 6pm.

Ye but they dont do it in the CL and the TV potential there is much bigger

The home leg has been moved to 8:05 kick off.

Well done on the club for sorting that - although it could now get very messy

Nothing like an extra 2 hours drinking time on st paddy day before United v Liverpool to suggest 'fan safety'
I don't think there's any avoiding pissed up clashes between fans, 6pm or 8pm won't make much difference there, but at least this way it won't bring the whole city centre to a standstill at rush hour.

Wtf is St Patrick's day? Always thought it was some Irish thing.

So why are people in Manchester getting drunk may I ask? Just another excuse to drink?
That plus there being a decent number of Irish (or descended) living here.

But mostly the excuse for a piss up.
