Do you want the ESL to happen?

Not happening. They had their shot and blew it spectacularly. Barca/Real can wish for whatever they want, but the idea is dead in the water for the foreseeable future.

or because to join you had to agree to certain rules which prevent clubs from losing money.
Bit like NBA. So something like Salary cap , transfers regulations of players between the teams, ESL buying players from outside the league and handle them bit like NBA (again you know rookies?)
That was behind the SL.
Italian and spanish clubs need it.
English can stay on their crazy tv money but none else can.

Wonder why.

You mean Top Spanish and Italian clubs
Eeh. The small and medium clubs would need this more but they're not included :D

Italian clubs kind of need it though yeah. Spanish clubs...well. When Florentino says the situation is really bad and we need the SL to survive, what he really means is we need the SL so real madrid can remain the financial top dog of the sport forevermore

Is there a benefit to all this oil money as it comes into the game, gives money to for ex Villa who then give it to Norwich and Bayer etc? Or is my thinking wrong?
Not really. Transfer fees are increasing like crazy, and this trend started with the oil clubs - Chelsea initially, PSG with Neymar, City etc. It's literally sending clubs like Barca to bankruptcy (well, it's one reason among many for Barca). More clubs could go bankrupt of this keeps spiraling.

I think the Messi and Kane deals are really helping fans get onboard with the ESL. My guess is we will have it with in the next 5 years.
that’s nothing compared to Madrid signing Kaka, Ronaldo, Alonso, Benzema, R. Albiol in 1 transfer window. For some perspective, those players were from their direct competitors in the champions league.

The day Barcelona announced Messi was leaving, Lapprta was pictured in a Madrid restaurant with Perez and Agnelli. No doubt discussing the ESL.

I think it is inevitable. The status quo is fcuked.
Yep, none of the fans of the real football clubs wanted it but the plastic clubs have fvcked football up so badly that it’s pretty much inevitable. A symptom of their recklessness. Nice one, plastics

This is such laughable nonsense. So Real Madrid can break the transfer record twice in a few years time, but if one of the "new" guys tries to match them, they're ruining football forever?

Also, United are in the top20 most expensive transfer list 4 times, Real 3 times. Both Chelsea and City just once.

The Super League is nothing but an attempt to build an everlasting monopoly at the expense of everyone who's not part of the "elite".

You're probably right. Them, Bayern and Juve have turned many of the top leagues into walkovers and football is so expensive now it's unsustainable. Ten years from now when we've had about 8 different clubs winning five of the top leagues for a decade, the ESL will be a lot more attractive.

It’s not going to happen. English clubs will need to convince the fans first and that’s going to be pretty much impossible.

All they have to do is get the TV fans on board surely, plenty of people willing to travel to Old Trafford or Anfield, beef up security and off they go.

Nah that won’t cut it. People will literally riot. They’ve already made that mistake with ‘legacy fans’ and it would be a monumental mistake to try it again. They’d need support from the match going fans which they won’t get.

Its gonna happen if fans allow it, because you cant count on customers, thats for sure, they gonna eat up any decent prepared shit by clubs.

This.

As long as its competitive with promotion and restrictions / demotions its not a bad idea. The issue presently in the sport is the governing bodies / authorities are inept UEFA, FIFA, FA the lot do not feasibly manage the sport effectively.

I thought PL put in new rules to stop PL clubs joining?
I think they just have to pay a hefty fine now.

Fans in the UK don’t really have any power for the clubs in contention as sad as that sounds. Bar the nuisance we can cause regarding delaying kick offs and protesting - a fraction of the revenue of all these big clubs comes from us.

Let’s say it is announced again, there’ll be protests but really how long for? Fans won’t turn up and blockade stadiums indefinitely and it’s not like there won’t be many alternative stadiums: they’ll probably do a world tour or something ghastly like that for inaugural ESL…United v Real in Beijing, Chelsea v Barca in NY, Juve v Pool in Sydney etc.

Ultimately the only way to stop this happening is by reigning in the plastic oil clubs and reversing their corruption of football. If they carry on on their present trajectory there is only one way this is heading- you’ll see a super league within a few years.

I don't even understand why English clubs would want to get in the Super League, they make so much money from their TV rights, it'd just be FOMO but at the expense of giving up a huge competitive/financial advantage that they've enjoyed for over a decade now.

City just fielded the most expensive team and bench in the history of the game and you come up with this.

And yet City spend more money, it's almost like judging how much a club spends only by how many large fees they pay out is a really stupid barometer.

And you read that shit on here all the time.

City just won the league and spent 100M on a squad player, likely to spend 150M on Kane now. You call that fair game?

United are spending money that they earned, not through daddy pumping oil money at them. If you don't see the difference, you are either deluded or clueless.

But if we look at the top 50 transfers United are in it 5 times, Real 6 times, Chelsea 4 times and City 8 times.

Top 100, United 12, Chelsea 10, City 13, Real 12.

The difference between United vs Chelsea and City, is United have spent from their own self generated income not from a corrupt billionaire spending on his play thing.

Somebody has to break transfer records, it is called inflation.

The problem is not who spend how much, the problem is where the money comes from. Real, United, Juventus, Barça, etc. spend the money they generate (or they incur in astronomical debts that will ruin their future). City, PSG, Chelsea... have spent 10 times the money they generate with a tremendous lack of success for years and it does not matter because they have infinite money.

real madrid (and i'm a barça fan) gets the money from the fact that they have been winning titles for a century, that their fans buy their shirts all over the world, because millions and millions of people want to watch their games, and because adidas and other companies pay them to been advertise/get some rights. Oil clubs don't need historical success, they don't need fans, they don't need the interest of any company, they only need to pump some oil.

come on! Chelsea, the first oil club, was a random club and was bought for 60 million!

You see it right?

But yeah, the oil clubs ruined football. Sure.

I can see it still going through, money talks and no amount of Gary Neville ranting or fans calling protests will stop that.

Point is, the CL isn't fit for purpose for the big clubs. Which is ridiculous frankly.

This gets peddled here so often and even some fans take the bait. What you're not pointing out is that as quiet a few posters pointed below is that the traditional clubs generate their income. There are real world consequences for their mishaps. Just look at City. When Pep first came he bought a new GK, Fullbacks, CBs, you name it. Most of them didn't work out. And what did they do? They bought another batch like they went grocery shopping.

Compare that to United where the club signed 2 CBs in the last 4 years.

Also why don't you mention Arsenal, AC Milan, Barcelona? Just a decade ago all of these clubs were considered European powerhouses, now all of them are skint and some even facing the perspective of going bankrupt. You want to know why? Because they don't have a sugar daddy that can pour billions so that they can stay relevant and competitive.

It's a shame really because right now the PL could have been a battle between United, Leicester, Tottenham, Liverpool and some other team that lost it's place to the sugar daddy clubs(most likely Arsenal).

What fans? I haven’t seen many change their opinions? It is and remains a competition to further the big clubs. It’s an unfair competition which would allow those big clubs to buy from the smaller clubs repeatedly. To then play against each other 6 times a season. What is the point in that for fans?

It's fair to say now we know about the spanish finances, the ESL was only ever a plan to save their asses.

Exactly. And everyone with an ounce of sanity can see it. You bought freely for years and if this is now the outcome then you should have to deal with that for whatever time it takes to get back in your feet. Fairly. Otherwise it makes a mockery of other teams being relegated etc for financial reasons

It's fair to say now we know about the spanish finances, the ESL was only ever a plan to save their asses.
True but I also see some Bayern Fans turning to ESL because of the mass spending of Oil clubs and EPL.

I absolutely hate the Idea but the gap between top clubs and the rest is becoming alarming

Fit for what purpose though? They don’t get enough exposure or cash?
