FA Cup: Man Utd v Exeter City 8/1/05

Isn't Spector somewhat ahead of him in t'pecking order? Was about to go on loan, stayed in 1st team squad when we played the Carling games?

Feck it, play Rio, he missed the first however many games of the cocking season

Hope not Rio and Mickey play. What if Rio gets injured here, then we're screwed. Mickey has played most minutes of all this season, give him a rest. I rather play Spector and Gary Neville in central defence, definitely Spector.

I've got Spector down at left back...

If Garys fit I would play him. He'll be fresh and good voice to help guide the younger players. With O Shea and Brown likely to be out I think Gary should play in central defence. If Pique is fit I would play him but I have feeling he might still be injured from the FA Youth Cup game.

duh! no live game here in canada! 10:00 Oldham vs. man city! DUH!!

Reds Duo Warn Against Giant-Killing Upset

Ryan Giggs is warning United against the presumption of FA Cup victory over Exeter, as the Reds prepare for Saturday's third round clash at Old Trafford.

The Welshman, who was substituted against Tottenham in midweek with a hamstring injury, won't take part as United begin the defence of the trophy.

Early reports that Giggs will be out for 6-8 weeks are as yet unfounded, though Sir Alex Ferguson is likely to confirm the extent of the injury on Friday.

The 31-year-old says United must guard against the FA Cup's unpredictability if they are to avoid being consigned to the list of clubs on the receiving end of a giant-killing cup defeat.

"No matter what team the manager picks we have to get the job done," Giggs told Manchester United Radio earlier this week.

"Exeter will be coming here to enjoy the game and enjoy the experience of playing at Old Trafford in the FA Cup. But they will also have at the back of their minds the knowledge that they could become heroes - not just for the day, for a long, long time.

"There is always that apprehension before an FA Cup tie; anything can happen - dubious penalties, a player getting sent off. We need to be at them from the start and be professional like we always are."

"As we see it, it is our trophy and we are looking to defend it. But we must treat Exeter with respect."
Darren Fletcher

Darren Fletcher, who played in his first major final in last year's FA Cup success, says the Reds have their position as holders to protect.

"It's an important game for us," he told Manchester United Radio. "As we see it, it is our trophy and we are looking to defend it. We'll be doing the correct job to try and get the win."

Fletcher played a vital part in United's memorable semi final win over Arsenal last season at Villa Park, earning his place in the final against Millwall.

"It was my first major final," Darren recalls. "The other players told me to try and savour every moment of it because it might never happen again. I did that. You only really enjoy it if you win."

It will be a similar experience for Exeter City's players at Old Trafford on Saturday. "For some of their players it is the biggest game of their life," Fletcher points out. "We have to do a professional job and give Exeter the respect they deserve.

"The event and the atmosphere can work both ways. Some players can be a bit intimidated by it or they could thrive on the atmosphere.

"But they are under no pressure. I'm sure their manager will be telling them to go out and enjoy themselves and play good football because it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

"We've got to treat them with respect, but we also know that if we do our job right we will win the game."

fsw had it listed as the MUFC match or chelsea, this one is a local derby if you will and a better match up.

Look you bunch of squabbling loons, I'll pick the team as I see fit. So there

----------- Howard -----------
Phil - Brown - O'Shea - Spector
Miller - DJx2 - Kleb - Richardson
-------- Bellion - Saha --------

Eagles, Rossi and Jones to come on in the 2nd half.

Good team that, only 4 of the players are injured....

I don't think Saha will play, he said he is targeting the chelsea game. And Kleberson is still injured.

Smith and Ronaldo will be rested so I expect either Rossi or Blake to partner Bellion upfront.

Brown isn't :D . Not sure why everyone seems to think Kleberson has returned from the dead though

If we play most of the teams listed so far, we'll lose.
the 'reserves' just aren't good enough. Exeter have won thier last 3 (or 4) games. they play together regularly, know how each other play, have nothing to lose.
As we've seen recently, Alex has got no 'Plan B'. We can't turn the heat up on teams any more. With an attack/midfield of Miller, DjDj, fletch, Richardson, Eagles, Bellion we could well be annilhilated. I've seen most of the Reserves games on MUTV, and they aren't really much good. Some great individual moments, but no teamwork whatsoever. Exeter on the other hand will probably be able to play as a team.

I hope that Fergie at least puts out a decent defence, otherwise we might struggle.
remember, we can put out weakened teams in the Worthless Cup, and nobody is particularly bothered if we lose. But this is the FA Cup, we are the holders, we are at home, there will be 68,000 souls in attendance. We CANNOT lose.
But we're deluding ourselves if we think the 2nd/3rd team can beat Exeter.
I also thought that we had to put our 'best' team out for the FA Cup, or else the FA will find an excuse to persecute once again.

It'll be an interesting game. Hope we don't make lots of ABUs very happy by losing.

Are you honestly saying that we need to put out a full strength side to beat a non-league team in a competitive match at Old Trafford?

What our second team can't beat Exeter???, of course they can and will. Plonk!!.

-----------------------Howard-----------------------
-P.Neville------G.Neville-------Fedinand-------Spector
-----------------------Djemba-----------------------
---------------Miller-----------Fletcher--------------
-Bellion----------------------------------Richardson-
-----------------------Smith------------------------

9.000 Exeter fans making the trip to Old Trafford. it should make for a good atmosphere. 5-0

I think there's only 3 actually. ;)

I'll put in Rossi for Saha, Fletcher in for Kleb and Gary in for O'Shea then. :D

This one doesn't seem to be on CANAL+ or whatever, anyone got any links for web streams that are likely to work?

as less players from the first team as possible, they need every break they can get. hopefully some young players will play, like rossi, pique etc, and brown should be back

According to BBC, Man Utd (from): Howard, Ricardo, Carroll, P Neville, G Neville, Brown, Silvestre, Ferdinand, Spector, Heinze, Fletcher, Keane, Scholes, Miller, Djemba-Djemba, Eagles, Jones, Ronaldo, Richardson, Bellion, Smith.

Team news from MUTV:

Tim

Phil---Brown---Pique----Spector

Eagles---Jones---Djemba-Djemba---Miller----Richardson

David Bellion

Bench:

Heinze
Ronaldo
Scholes
Smith
Ricardo

Not that many youngsters there.

That suggests one thing to me then. Fergie is taking this competition seriously this season since he probably knows the premiership is basically out of sight.

The possibility of winning no trophy this season would be a catastrophe.

I take that back. We're fielding a poor side by looks of things
