Fabinho

Di Marzio has a decent track record on Italian-based players and Raiola's clients. Why are you so sure that he's particularly connected at United? A Mendes client like Fabinho, I'd probably wait for Duncan Castles. At any rate, not much sense in getting excited about anyone reporting interest, I imagine we'll have genuine interest in 20+ players for the summer (numerous options for each desired position).
But any examples given and you dismiss doesn't explain Jose, does it?

By horrendous you mean physically overmatched then yes.

Not to mention being totally inept at attacking which is quite a hindrance for a fullback. Anyhow I'm being generous and saying he's improved lately. That's as far as I'll stretch it. Wrong thread so back on topic. Fabinho eh...

Back to fabinho, I think him and Griezmann are the only obvious sounding transfers for us.

I heard on a guardian podcast that silva Mbappe and I think Mendy were all set to stay another season to boost their chances of the 2018 WC selection. Fabinho wasn't one of them.

I don't see either Pogba or Herrera being dropped so signing Fabinho means using a midfield 3 and Griezmann would be a waste of money in that case no? He would have to play either out wide or as a lone striker, not where he excels.

You do seem confused. Anyone getting giddy about the prospects of signing Mbappe based on this Di Marzio article should also take note of the fact that in the very same article Di Marzio says our bid for the player was unsuccessful and that the player is interested in joining a different club.

Nothing about that is contradictory.

No, you are confused. you questioned Di Marizios credentials and then proceeded to use that very same source to legitimise the claim that he prefers Madrid....

if you don't see the contradiction in that then there is no point continuing this discussion. I gave you the benefit of the doubt but it turns out you were being hypocritical.

How would it be a waste? Griezmann wouldn't be bought to play in a middle 3. He'd play up top or off the left or right.

That's what I said. Griezmann is an amazing no. 10/second striker. He's nothing special as a winger or leading the line by himself which he would have to do in a 4-3-3.

4-2-3-1

Herrera and Fabinho holding with a interchangable trio or Griezmann, Poggy and Mika behind the striker?

Let's see if I can make it even simpler for you to understand. I am not saying Mbappe would rather sign for Madrid than United. I do not know who he'd rather sign for. I am saying, if you accept Di Marzio's assertion that we bid for Mbappe, then you also have to accept his assertion that the bid failed and the player is interested in a different club.

Of all the players mooted to be United targets, I think Fabinho would be the biggest disappointment if we don't get him this summer. Griezmann has been bantered about so long, but he might not fit, depending on other transfers, while Mbappe is expected to go somewhere else (i.e. Spain), but Fabinho just 'fits' and seems to be the most likely to instantly boost our title hopes, just like Kante (& Matic a few seasons ago). Other transfer targets seem to be mix & match types (for example, Lukaku could be switched out for Belotti) or squad fillers, but Fabinho seems to fit our greatest long term need. Yeah, maybe Naingollain could do similar, but Fabinho just seems to have a bit more glamour & aura that we expect out of United players. Maybe it's just the Monaco run in the CL that has enhanced his legend, but I really hope he's here in the summer.

Talk to me like the idiot I am. What position would you expect him to play for us? His Wikipedia page and my lack of concentration while watching Monaco play this season has lead to this confusion.

The funny thing is that is what I am saying but you're saying something different now...

This is what you said all throughout this thread:

Probably because this is vague, speculative nonsense.

And what has "the best source available" actually said?

We bid €85m for Mbappe, the bid was the turned down, Monaco want €140m and the player wants Real Madrid (so nothing happening there). We made an initial enquiry months ago for Nainggolan but have not followed up and the player doesn't want to leave anyway (so nothing happening there). Fabinho and Kroos are alternatives (which doesn't even make sense as they are different types of midfielders).

Not exactly exciting stuff.

Also, Di Marzio is nothing like "the best source available" for non-Italian-based players.

For one player, which was rejected and the player wants a different club. What a time to be alive!

Mbappe is the player we bid for. Fabinho is apparently a midfield target along with Kroos.

Di Marzio doesn't say we have bid or will bid for Fabinho. He says Fabinho is one of three midfield targets. Given that you have an Italian hack writing about a Brazilian player based in France possibly transfering to an English club, it should all be taken with an almighty pinch of salt.

I still can't get to grips with why on the one hand you say that this is speculative nonsense because Di-Marizo isn't connected to French teams but then use Di-Marizo as a source to say player x,y,z from France are interested in another team??

Also, the bit in red is just embarrassing pal. You are having a mare but have tried to backtrack now that you have been called out about it

Center midfielder. He basically plays the same roles than Hargreaves.

*sighs*

This is like wading through treacle. One last try.... This article isn't in my view something worth getting particularly excited about because:

1) There are good reasons to be dubious about its accuracy (Di Marzio's track-record suggests he's more reliable when it comes to Italian-based players and having a #6 (Fabinho) as an alternative to a #8 (Nainggolan) doesn't make a great deal of sense).

2) Even if it is accurate, it means we've had a bid turned down for a player who wants to join another side (not great news if you want us to sign Mbappe), and have enquired some time ago about a player who doesn't want to leave his current side (not great news if you want us to sign Nainggolan).

Do you now get it?

You speak a lot of his track record and how it favours Italian players. Can you give any examples of times hes stuck his neck out for players outside that bracket and proven to be wrong?

Yes, posted in the Mbappe thread... all Di Marzio stories:

Done deal/very close: Falcao to City from Monaco, Alves to PSG from Barca, Gaitan to United from Benfica, Sanches to United from Benfica, Aubameyang to City from Dortmund.

United's interest/strong interest in: Benteke, Benatia, Handanovic, Manolas.

Obviously he has and will get some right (incl. Darmian, Romero, Mkhi, Pogba, Zlatan - seems he's worth trusting when it comes to Italian-based players or Raiola clients) but nobody is an oracle when it comes to this stuff.

But Sanches to United was infact very close and IIRC Abemeuyang to city too.

Aubameyang quotes on City :
“It’s true, there was contact,”

“My father held talks with the club, but in the end there was nothing concrete.”

Di Marzio article words : There have been positive contacts between the clubs in the last few hours and Man City is optimistic they can close the deal with both the German club and the player.

So nothing misreported in that example. WRT to sanches the FCB chairman himself said he was united bound until they came in the last minute to hijack.

I can't really be bothered to research alves and Falcao but I wouldn't be surprised to see more of the same. Falcao was particularly hot property and would have likely held some form of talks with City.

My point : Di Marzio is more often than not quite accurate. If he says fabinho is priority I believe him but that's not to say it's a done deal. He's not even saying that himself.

Pretty much this.

I think we're gonna spend massively this summer...like £200-300m on about 5 or 6 players...

GK if De Gea Leaves, one or two new CB's, a Holding Midfielder, winger, Striker...

Each one needs to be a top, top player, and they don't come easily...

Mourinho has said he's looking at "2, 3 or maybe 4 players" and Woodward has also said that we're going into a period of much smaller squad turnover compared to the last few seasons.

I think we'll sign 3 players this Summer, possibly 4 if we take into account the Zlatan injury.

Fabinho is a great player. Let's hope our 'interest' in him, as reported by Di Marzio, is stronger and more likely to come to fruition than our 'interest' in Benatia, Sanches, Handanovic, Gaitan, Manolas, and Benteke.

No requirement of cynisism here. With mourinho the targets are always clear.

It would be expensive but Fabinho, Griezmann and Mbappe would sort our attack out like.
If Ibra was not injured then yes.

Think a proper DM can help your attack. For one, we will be winning more balls in the middle of the pitch and secondly, it'd allow our more creative midfielders to influence the game further up the pitch without worrying about the space behind them.
,
Exactly!

We have sold 3 players this year, some of them will need replacing and the 50m added to the summer budget.

With the amount of injuries, I believe JM will want a full squad for next season. So I believe 5 players will come in, possibly 6 (LB,CB,DM,CM,RW,CF). Then we will see Rooney and 1-2 other(s) leave the club.

I would previously have agreed with you, but not anymore. Nothing is for certain.

Falcao + Di Maria = Brilliant attack, lots of goals. Yeah right.
Roony + Martial + Mata = Brilliant attack, lots of goals. Yeah right.
Ibra + Miki + Martial + Rashford + Mata = = Brilliant attack, lots of goals. Yeah right.

You see the pattern?

IMO, we need to buy 2 attackers in their prime, who are ready to enter our team and immediately start scoring. Similar to what Ibra did, but 2 attackers.
I feel that MBappe is not guaranteed to do well in the EPL, so this is risky. Griezmann could do well for us, though, but I expect him to be more of a creator than a finisher.
Ibra needs to be replaced and none of the names mentioned can replace him.

Pogba and Fabinho have a good passing range , and aint restricted by sideways and backwards passing though. It opens up more chances

Stay clear of mbappe , and put martial as a striker , free him from wing duties martial is also good as a striker.

Sell Martial. Buy Mbappe, pair him upfront, put a solid midfield cast behind them and watch them tear down defences.

And then see martial winning 4 seria a and buy him again on world record fee?
