Fantasy Tournament: World Cup All-Time All-Stars

Ronaldo also won 3 consecutive man of the match awards.

Quite, my pick of Ronaldo is very different from Desert's pick, now Messi really hasn't done much at any WC, unused sub when knocked out in 06, completely trashed by Germany in 2010...

Ronaldo was going to win the young player of the tournament in 06 if it wasn't for the furore over the wink incident with the English press.

I think he had a decent WC and I'd argue his scoring record does him no justice. That said, he certainly wasn't anywhere close to the beast he became.

While with Messi I could easily list 16 better performing 10s or 9s, you would struggle to find 32 wingers you would pick ahead of him on that performance. Still a few much better wingers out there though.

It is the same with Ronaldo to some extent.

It's just a complete lie to compare Cristiano's WC exploits to Messi. Cristiano was a star in a team who made their best ever progress in a WC, Messi either gets dropped or trashed so far.

A great pick IMO. I tried to find a way to pair him with Puskas, but there's no question he is a better fit for you. I will go into more detail once the drafting is over though because I would have to throw around various names and if I censor them then nothing will make any sense.

How are you planning to set up? 4-2-3-1? Could make a XMAS-tree alongside Rivaldo and behind Ronaldo as well.

In fairness, getting to your turn at 4:30 GMT isn't much use. It was pretty much Jayvin and I here and I should have been in bed by then.

I'll wait a few more hours for Fergus'son.

Edit:
Is it even already my turn? Ffs, I'm confused with one hour time difference . Well, I wait a few more hours anyway.

Still around or do you need a PM?

There's hardly any good South American keepers pre-74 and no other who is a non-winner. No-brainer really, both for his '66 and 1970 performances.

I know Cutch and TITO are well stocked in the full-back department, but I don't want to risk losing out on this brick-shithouse after that cnut snapped up Bergomi.

For the 2010 World Cup, Messi wore the number 10 shirt for the first time in a major tournament.[214] Messi played the entire game on Argentina's opening match in the 2010 World Cup, the 1–0 victory against Nigeria. He had several opportunities to score but was repeatedly denied by Nigerian goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama,[215] who was named man of the match by FIFA.[216] Messi started in Argentina's following 4–1 win against Korea Republic; he played in more of an attacking midfielder and playmaking role under Maradona,[214][217][218] and participated in all of the goals of his team, helping Gonzalo Higuaín score a hat-trick.[219] In the third group match, Messi was named captain for Argentina in a 2–0 win over Greece. He was again the centrepoint of Argentina's play, playing an important role in both of his team's goals,[220] and was voted man of the match.[221]
At the Round of 16 he assisted Carlos Tévez for the first goal in a 3–1 win against Mexico. The World Cup ended for Argentina with a 4–0 loss against Germany in the quarter-finals.[222]
Messi was nominated in ten player shortlist for Golden Ball award by FIFA Technical Study Group. The group identified Messi with the following words: "Outstanding in his pace and creativity for his team, dribbling, shooting, passing – spectacular and efficient".[223]

Oh and two of Ronaldo's man of the match awards came in 0-0s where both teams played quite badly. The other was against North Korea in a 7-0 win where his goal was lucky.

I was surprised those going with five at the back didn't pick him. Proven LB and LCB in a five and not a winner. Someone out there will go all mental for more than one reason! ;)

Desert, I wouldn't dispute his tourno wasn't as bad as some make it out to be. That said, there certainly are 16 -in fact, more- #10s who had superior tournaments. "Ten player shortlist for Golden Ball" in a rather poor tourno for superstars says it all. You should edit the bummed-up unpicked players there as well (not that I care myself).

That's 2010 though. I'm pretty sure he was picked on 2006 form, or at least should have.

Weren't the Man of the match awards in 2010 online polls?

A quick google search and here it is.
From FIFA.com
What is the Man of the Match award?
For the first time in the history of the FIFA World Cup™, the Man of the Match award for each match will be chosen by you, the fans!
This means you decide the best player and who gets to receive the Budweiser Man of the Match trophy when the game ends.
Where can I vote for the Man of the Match?
We are making it easy for you to vote.
If you are following the FIFA World Cup on the Emirates MatchCast feature here on FIFA.com, you will be able to vote in the MatchCast on every single match!

That's clearly a popularity contest and it means absolutely nothing, imo. Even less than when a group of journalists decide something.

Both Messi and Ronaldo showed legendary attributes but poor finishing touches. They had the exact same attributes as which we call them "the best in the world". But their finishing touches were bad. Both for this draft has poor shooting, poor crosses, poor through-balls. Their overall game is still world-class though.

Their pace/technique/dribbling/passing/vision/etc were world-class so both of them can surely be picked. But personally Messi would have to be picked for some odd tactical reason where his poor finishing balls are made up for.

I mean it is always easier to argue that Ronaldos crosses were solid but the team just wasn't inside the box giving him any options. But it is hard to say all of Messi's shots missed because any other reason than him having extremely poor shooting.

Seeing how Messi is used and argued for will be absolutely brilliant though so I am happy he is picked.

Or maybe because of a particular cokehead playing him as a central midfielder while not calling Cambiasso.
