Did not want to look back too many pages - but know that there will be enough to talk about in the next months - so I opened a new thread to post this video...

Bayern's Brazilians - Thiago, Rafinha and Douglas Costa

Did they drop it after that last pass or something?

If you guys get a bit of luck with injuries, I think you've a pretty good shot at the title this year...

@Blackwidow - What do you think about Pep's switch to 3-6-1 (or some variant of that)?

I just finished reading Marti Perarnau's book on Pep's first season at Bayern. I like his concept of having Lahm at pivote due to his ability to drop into the back three and make it a back four when dealing with counter-attack's, but increasing numbers in midfield to dominate the opposition by numbers.

He's gotten a bit of criticism on the Cafe because he's changing things that worked before, however, I think that conceptually he's onto something here. I like his progressive approach to the game. If he pulls it off again, he'll deserve it.

I read Perarnau's book as well and I thought he hugely overdid it with the hagiography. He paints Pep as some sort of Buddha and Confucius reborn as a true renaissance genius of football.

The thing about Lahm is that it just doesn't work the way Pep seems to think it does. Lahm just isn't a great midfielder and he never will be. Löw tried to copy Pep's handling of Lahm during the world cup and then, for some reason, was praised for playing him as RB again after everyone and his dog saw that he didn't contribute anything meaningful in the middle of the park.

Lahm's been playing more on the right wing in pre-season, in front of Rafinha (still don't know why) and while he'll never be a good crosser I still feel more comfortable with him out wide, offensively or defensively.

He is a fullback and should play there. Plus he's miles better than Rafinha, even if Rafinha is good himself.

Guardiola is an innovator, and as with all innovations, they don't always work. But I agree that he's a managerial genius. He's aways looking to break new ground, push new boundaries. I hope he has a great year this year. I really like him.

12 min Trainingsmatch today shown by a Munich newspaper (training session was open)

Starke - Dante - Benko (17-year-old youngster) - Thiago - Vidal - Müller

Thiago Brazilian? Wasn't he born in Italy and raised in Spain? He is as much Brazilian as Zidane was Algerian.

His parents are Brazilian though and he has the Brazilian nationality as well as the Spanish. He was born in Italy because his father played there. His brother chose to play for Brazil a few years ago after starting out in the Spanish youth nationalteams. Thiago could have played for Brazil as well.

That was a weird reading, full of arrogance to say the least.
Well Bayern the club and Munich as a city are basically the center and definition of arrogance, so that article is quite accurate.
I laughed when he described Munich as laid back, bourgeois would've suited better.

He spent half of his youth in Brazil, too - his father played 2 or 3 years in Brazil and then in Spain again - and after the career they went back to Brazil. He played for Flamengo in Rio from age 10 to 13, then they moved back to Spain and he played a year in a smaller Spanish club near Vigo (where his family still lives) until he went to Barcelona with 14.

I see him as both - when he is together with Rafinha he for sure is Brazilian...

If my two german parents had born and raised me in Linnyshaw, i recon i'd still be mostly german. Or dead :)

Bit of a background article in todays issue of "Münchner Merkur". Gist is: Pep seeming more tense than ever. Is said to have given the team a thorough "behind closed doors" talking-to, tenor: This year, everyone runs where i tell him to run, only exception on the planet is Messi  Wonder how Müller will take this :D
I'd say he really is determined to win a big one in his last season here.

That bolded bit is quite funny. Not sure how "smart" it was (how the other players, like you mentioned Muller, will feel about that), but i guess it's kind of true. Messi is on another level

Yeah, I'd say Pep (and alot of others) will deem his 3 years at FCB a failure if he doesn't deliver big ears.

it is, it also has astonishing depth and detail, both about city and club. The lad has done his research. As a local, i didn'T learn much new, but it was interesting for its outside view. Very good article, I've read much worse.
Yeah, definitely. But then, I do understand if someone finds it boring. It's really long and probably a bit too much self-congratulary. I liked it because very rarely you get to read something that's so well researched.

I think Bayern did some smart signing this season. Costa looking good, and Vidal will definitely help them. Götze still remains an enigma, don't think anybody knows what's his best position in the team now.
I believe Pep/board thought he could somewhat replicate Messi's 'False 9' role in Bayern, but never really worked for him.

Enjoyed the article although I skimmed through some of it. Loved this quote lol.
You may beat Bayern Munich today, but you never beat them tomorrow. They are the surest thing in sports.

Fox fecked up the Bundesliga deal though. They aren't even promoting it and have delegated it to FS2 which is only available in half the homes. The only way to catch a full season is to get FSgo streaming which is a hundred bucks, more expensive than MLB which you can get for just 80. They're treating it like a stepson. Idiots.

Without Bayern, there is no Fox Sports deal. Wolfsburg might be one of the most entertaining teams on the planet, but Fox executives didn’t say, "We must have Wolfsburg!" They wanted Bayern.

At the same time, you’re less likely to watch if you already know the outcome. Die Roten have won the last three league titles. They swallow up challengers, taking their best players and, occasionally, their managers. Though not necessarily the case in the present tense, their playing style has at times been more about trophies than aesthetics. Their presence is so heavy that they almost never find a manager who is either willing or able to last more than two and a half years on the job.

Bayern is, like the city in which it resides, everything at once. A conservative monolith with an eye out for new trends. A lucky bastard who needs less luck than everybody else. A tyrant with a deft social conscience. A Porsche and a safe, reliable Volkswagen. A snake and a snake charmer.

Bayern Munich is the supreme ruler of what might be the deepest soccer league in the world. This is how to Bayern.

Think they have amazing squad depth again. Let's say their first XI consists of Neuer, Alaba, Boateng, Benatia, Lahm, Thiago, Vidal, Muller, Costa, Robben, Lewandowski; they'll have a bench consisting of Dante, Rafinha, Kirchhoff, Bernat, Javi Martinez, Ribery, Alonso, Rode, Götze, Hojbjerg.

A bit, huh?

I do agree that it is well written and even more importantly well researched. I also prefer articles which don´t even attempt to conceal favoritism compared to the many articles which come across as forcibly objective with a subtext, which just reeks of bias.

Its a clear advertising for Bayern Munich and given their status in the Bundesliga for the league aswell. Still normally stuff you would rather find in the stadium magazines.

Of course, the article itself is mostly honey to my ears :D
But I can see the points where he goes above and beyond journalistic neutrality.

That, and on conjunction advertising for the Fox Sport Bundesliga broadcasts, especially since they've been shoved to the fringe of their program (see prarek's post). Clearly, the author hopes to have more opportunities to write about the Bundesliga and enhance his profile, and there's no better (or easier?) way for kindling more interest in what seems to be his journalistic forte than to heap praise on the clear Nr.1 draw the Bundesliga has around the world: Bayern Munich? Can't blame him, he clearly knows his stuff and how to write about it.

By the way: You guys should treat yourself to the circlejerk and flame war going on the comment section between Bayern fans and (mostly) United fans. Reminds me of certain threads on here... and I was surprised to not find any comments by Anchan.

Well, I am actually surprised that he has not posted a long poem agreeing with every letter of this article in this thread :D

That's because he's banned.

"A Song of the League of World Cup Winners - Vol.1: A Game of Scorers"
Pretty much like George R.R. Martin's work with pointless stats instead of tits and murder.

Can't believe you didn't notice Anchan was banned. The eery lack of cheerfully ignorant optimism and hype recently should have tipped you off.
I didn't realize it immediately either.

Now that you mention it there was a distinct lack of hyperboles going on around here, but then again I thought he might just take a break. Must be exhausting to be "super, super, super" all the time.

ARD broadcast it live, if anyone's interested.

I don't get it. Didn't Pep say that Thiago needs to play?

We all do not know what is with him. Was off the radar a little lately with his flu. The only time there was a little talk about him was last Monday when he clashed with Guardiola in training a little... Guardiola did not like that he played tricks and not straight passes and got mad on him for that.

His dad started and won the 94 World Cup for Brazil, makes his kind of Brazilian. His brother Rafinha has picked to play for Brazil

Even Vidal looks good in Lederhosen...
