From the Times: United expected to extend Shaw's contract & unlikely to sign Danny Rose

What's good about it?
I agree I really hate it when a player that we sign for big money end up getting a chance to prove themselves frankly I was disappointed that we didn't break Lukaku legs as soon as he entered the training ground. Oh well.

Click bait title, doesn't even say we're offering him a 'new' deal, just we're using the option of extending his current deal by a further year.

Thanks for the weird rant.

Luke Shaw has the potential to be a fantastic player. I'm glad we're looking at developing him instead of discarding him before he's really had a chance and moving onto the next new thing.

What's good about it?

Can't be tossing aside £30m assets in the current market especially when the asset is quite young and has shown potential. Spunking £50m on likes of Danny Rose makes no sense either considering we don't have bottomless pit of cash.

Shaw started to come on terms with Jose. It was very unlucky he got a long-term injury. I believe he'll nail the LB spot towards the end of the season and next summer he'll get another contract.

I wouldn't even offer Shaw a Werthers Original until he's proved he can stay fit for longer than 6 months.

I'm all for giving people chances, and after suffering a double leg break, he should get more than most.

But the fact is we can't wait forever for the lad. I'd give him till Feb/March and see how he does.
I do rate him highly, and would love for him to succeed.

I agree, but he can hardly do that with Danny Rose in the way.

The title is just a bit deceptive, made it sound like Mourinho was ready to put faith in Shaw for this season. Still, I suppose it's positive news that we aren't going to let him leave for free.

Good, also I think it's just club triggering one year extension.

Few days ago he said manager trusts him and expect more which gives him more confidence, also
"
Deep down I have to look at what I was doing at the start of last season. Maybe at the time I thought I was training hard enough but what gives me confidence is that the manager believes I can do more. "I'm ready now. I think I realise now even more how important it is to give everything for the manager and the club; to strive for the best, to win trophies.

Hopefully he will stay fit for the season.

positive news on many sides if true.

1 - he renews and becomes the player we all expected (hopefully this!)
2 - he renews and has another duff season with the odd match showing his potential - but at least he won't leave on a free and we'll sell him for £xm next summer

Never had been a player whose less deserving of a contract extension as luke Shaw

At 18 years of age, Shaw was scarily good at Southampton. He got it all to be the best left back in the Prem, maybe even Europe. Just ask Gary Neville.
Would be such a shame if he didn't make it here and the waste of talent would be similar to Anderson.

Luke, if you read this, I want you to know that I believe in you.

I think it would be daft for the club not to exercise the 1 year option on his contract. We paid a lot of money for him and to lose him in a years time for next to nothing wouldn't be great.

I still think that he's got the potential to be a great player for us, fitness at the moment seems to be the big issue. I would imagine that the club will extend his deal by a year and then if he can prove his fitness over the next year and also show signs of improving as a player then they'll offer him a new 4 or 5 year deal.

That's true, and I wouldn't want Rose for the prices quoted. I'd rather us stick with Blind and Darmian for now.

If we signed Rose, it would mean the end for Shaw. And that would be a sad end, to his promising United career.

This.

I can assure you lot that if we let him go for free next summer, Pep will sign him and turn him into the best LB in football history. Seriously, he's that fecking talented.

He has all the physical traits needed to be a top full back. It's just the mental side that let him down last season. But it looks like Jose is working on that. If he stays injury free this year, I expect him to make the LB spot his own.

Call this article bull*hit. Why would the club offer a contract to someone who is consistently injured. It's much more likely we would offer him an incentive for a new contract which is to get fit and remain available

Lol the over hype of english players is incredible. He has shown nothing in the last 2 years to indicate he will be in the top 5 lb's in the premier league let alone the best in Europe

Off topic, I think our strategy of offering contracts with option of an extra year is brilliant. Do all clubs do this or it's just us?

Look at the guy your username was taken from.

The club has a recent history of doing just that.

And why is that? Two years ago he broke his fecking leg.

Are people even reading the article?
When we signed him, we got him on a 4yr contract plus an option for another another year.
We are just exercising that option right now, so that if he finds his form and injury back, we're not in a position of losing him on a free.

We've that option on Blind, Herrera too.

And why is that? Two years ago he broke he's fecking leg.

Its exactly a year ago since he returned from that injury, the general consensus was that it would/should take him around 3-4 months to get back upto speed. He was massively dissappointing last year, with question marks over his fitness/mind set/desire.

This guy is a long way away from being a top lb

It's positive if we give him a new deal. It's just retaining some sort of value in an asset if we trigger a one year clause.

United "EXPECT" to extend Shaw's contract.
We didn't actually give him a new contract yet. This article can be the 'incentive' for his motivation. That he still has the support of the club, even though he's been out for a while and some fans turned their backs on him.

The title doesn't say United "Confirm" to extend Shaw's contract.

I like this article since it can give Shaw a moral boost to come back strong, and assuring fans the club did not give up on him.
Call this a good article.

The sooner we get the likes of Shaw, Jones on pay as you play deals the better all round

Well we could also be extending his contract just to retain some sort of value for him.

But overall, I'm happy with the news and hopefully Shaw can have an injury free season.

If not, I'd be all for selling and signing a new LB. We can't wait forever, especially as LB is a key position for us, seeing the width Valencia provides from the other side. It will really add another dimension to our attack.

The club aren't offering him a contract, it's the extension option from the original contract so we don't lose him for free next season.

Besides, he was available for a reasonable period last season but Mourinho was refusing to pick him.

Has people here forgot that, at times, Luke Shaw was our greatest attacking threat during LvG's first season? And how ridiculousy good he was before that PSV prick broke his leg?

Well his leg was hanging off for 1 of those years.

Even before it happened, his first season was shocking. He came to the club out of shape and only played 16 games for us. Pretty sure both Hodgson and Van Gaal called him fat that season as well.

This is what sticks out to me more than 5 games against awful teams which fans keep going on about prior to his injury. Seems to get leeway from fans that Anderson would get slaughtered for.
