Gareth Bale is...The most expensive player ever?!

we also (allegedly) matched Real Madrid's offer

Apparently so. As good as Bale is I'm not sure we could afford to spend that much on one player when we have so much strengthening to do generally, so maybe it's not such a bad thing it didn't work out.

Shame really, He like Giggsy will probably never get to taste a big international tournament. Players of their calibre should be at the pinnacle of their sport.

It should really make Januzaj think carefully before choosing IMO.

I think Wales has a decent chance for the Euro 2016, now that 24 teams take part. It's difficult, but if they have both Bale and Ramsey fit, they should finish 3rd in their qualifying group and could get through in the playoffs.

The really bad games in a row. I still get the feeling that when team's don't let him run he doesn't quite have the attributes to get over that. His control, passing and general awareness really weren't up to scratch in either of their last two games.

It's all very well doing it against weaker sides where he can get much more room, but for the money spent I think the Madridistas will be bitterly disappointed with what he's delivered in their biggest games of the season.

Some Madridistas are on to something on their forum :D

"No puede caer la breva de mandarlo al City y estos nos dan a Silva y Aguero?"

It sucks he got blamed for the goal, even though his positioning has no effect if it's on the other side (didn't watch the game so can't judge). What I do know is you don't take Ronnie's FK away from him then balls it up; you are just asking for trouble there.

I had total sympathy for him there. His free kicks are probably better than Ronaldo's and I'd have put my money on Ronaldo's either hitting the wall or flying over too.

When he played for Spurs I wasn't keen on Garth Bale, but he's really stepped it up now and proved all the doubters wrong, including me. Fair fecks to him.

Bale has not 'really stepped up' this season. He was sensational last season for Tottenham. Now he plays for a top team so people give him his due but he has been a top player for a while now.

Indeed.

Tottenham last season were a one man team, I remember most of their matches at end were decided by a Gareth Bale thunderbolt.

I think he'll reach close to Ronaldo's level in the next two years or so. He has got all the talent plus Ronaldo like determination to reach the top.

I really don't think so. He had a lot of goals but his general play was underwhelming. It was pointed out that several players in the league had much better stats and general play, without the acclaim. And the comparisons to Ronaldo in 06/07 were just grating.

He is more involved with the counter at Real now. He lacks the ability to decide games where space is minimal, but that will come with time. I thought he would be a total flop at Real, but he is far from that, and he will get better. So kudos to him, and more pie for me

People have been using that exact same criticisms for this season.

He hasnt looked better at real at all, that is complete nonsense. He is unsurprisingly now posting better stats when he is playing with better players against teams who aren't as good as the team he plays for.

Better stats?
41 games - 21 goals 19 assists this year vs 51 - 37 and 17 last year.

I think he has looked much better than he did at Spurs. It may be that the players around him are much better, but it's not a given that he would be able to step up. Look at Fellaini this season for my prime example.

I wonder if Ronaldo was sold and the team was based around bale, how many goals would he score. I think he is capable of 40-45 goals if he was the main man and he was constantly fed the ball as well as taking all the penalties

Bale was brought to replace Ronaldo in the future I think.

Where are these stats from? He scored 26 in all comps last year, in 44 apps.
Transfermarkt, I think it added the national team goals for European qualifiers too.

Are the other players properly passing to him now?

He's in a new league, playing a different style of football, for a better team granted but with far more pressure to deliver and not being the no1 player in a team. He has done really well, decent stats now in a big game too. Impressive.

I like many watched his first few games, where he turned and just tried to run at people and thought he may get found out, as he was not performing well, but to be fair he has come through that and now often off the right puts in top top performances.

He's a good player, not the best in the world and not as bad as people try and make out. The price tag seems to result in a lot of people constantly down playing anything good he does. I'll never really understand the hype though, Walcott for example has been posting the same numbers of goals the last couple of years.

In saying all of that the goal last night, while obviously important, isn't the incredible goal i've seen it reported as. Great counter but he basically ran in a straight line past a defender who did nothing to try and stop him.

Your post is a great example of someone down playing everything he does.
