Bale's performance was fantastic in that match. His hat-trick can't be dismissed simply by saying that Maicon "switched off".
And saying that it didn't matter is rubbish. It was crucial, since it kept Spurs in the tie and set up realistic possibility that Spurs could win the 2nd leg (in which Bale again ran Maicon ragged) and thus go through to the next round .

GlastonSpur. You lost all credibility in this debate by rewriting history ...
I've already acknowledged in post 2041 that it was a group stage match and not a two-legged tie. But this doesn't wipe out existence of Bale's hatrick, nor his superb performances in both games against Inter, nor my view that he is one of the top LWs globally.
Nor does it change my view that many of the critical posters in this thread would be waxing lyrical about Bale if he played for Man. Utd.
...afraid of competition (apparently).

Even he admits there are better wingers than him at United, but some of our fans say he is the best winger in country.![]()

The question is whether he can step up from being a somewhat one-dimensional, out and out winger like Valencia or whether he can add some variety to his game and become a multi-dimensional attacker.
There is nothing wrong with being one dimensional if he is consistently good at it and knows his limitations. The question is whether he can step up from being a somewhat one-dimensional, out and out winger like Valencia or whether he can add some variety to his game and become a multi-dimensional attacker.
He's a bit of a diver now isn't he ?
too truePart of what really annoys me about the English media.
Ive heard foreigners torn to shreds for cheating. You always get 'Aw we don't do that kind of thing here' from the pundits.
In last month, ive seen Bale dive a few times, including cheating a penalty at the Emirates.
Perch pretend to be shot, and Carroll diving to win a penalty.
All incidents pretty much swept under the rug, none of the harsh criticism johnny foreigner gets.
He actually admitted that he dives. Hardly a peep.Part of what really annoys me about the English media.

“Sometimes it looks like you’re diving but I think if someone’s coming across you, you just try and get out of the way.
“But because they haven’t touched you and you’ve got out of the way it looks like you’re diving.
“It’s a difficult one. You can see why people say you’re diving but at the end of the day I’d rather dive than get hurt.
“But whenever a challenge does come in I’m more likely to try and get out of the way and not get hurt rather than get hurt. I tend not to dive.”
By diver, I meant the vicious kind one that does his best to earn free kicks or penalties.
I wouldn't be surprised if he's gone by next season. I think he'll stay for one, maybe two at a push, more years. The contract just is a statement to other clubs that they're going to be demanding a massive fee for him, at least £30m being my guess.
Of course, it'll all depend on where Spurs are in a couple of years really. If they stay where they are now, he'll leave. If they can establish themselves as a top 4 club who are pushing higher year after year, then he may stay.
Tottenham winger Gareth Bale has branded Charlie Adam a coward after being sidelined for a second time by the Liverpool and Scotland midfielder.
Bale was out for three months with ankle ligament damage after a challenge by Adam, then with Blackpool, in 2011.
He was on left crutches again by Adam in a pre-season game on Saturday and said: "He's a bit of a coward.
"It's flattering if players try to take you out in a game but when it threatens your career it becomes more serious."
Adam joined Liverpool for an undisclosed fee of around £8m in July 2011.
"What he did was over the top," Bale insisted. "Some people are like that and it's just wrong.
"There are pictures on the internet of what he did before when he snapped all my ankle ligaments. I was out for three months that time. He's come for me twice now - and he's got me twice.
"When someone makes a very bad tackle on you, you expect an apology. I've had no apology. And I'm not going to accept his apology."
Spurs full-back Kyle Walker joined the condemnation of Adam and added: "Gareth is a very good player. He needs protection.
"Players shouldn't hate him. They should appreciate playing against a player like him. They can actually learn from him rather kick him.
"It's simple. He [Adam] is jealous, as Gareth is such a good player."
Gareth Bale is....... A bit of a cry baby.
