Gareth Bale is...The most expensive player ever?!

He's hit a new level this season to be fair, his 16th goal. Certainly the best winger in the PL at the moment.

In fairness he can do everything Ronaldo can, just worse in every way.

Soon enough you'll be hearing people call him the most complete player in the league.

Indeed. Would love him at United.

On another note, why does everyone on here seem so certain he's itching to leave? If they qualify for the CL then I don't see why he'd want to go anywhere else.

He's the main man at a superbly run football club. Qualify for the CL, buy a CB, RW and a forward and they have a very good chance of challenging for major honours next season.

Holtby looks a great buy too.

I think he once said he dreams of spain.. In any case, if either of Real or Barca come in for him, he'l want to go regardless of where Spurs finish.

He's been fantastic this season. With age on his side, he can become one hell of a player.

I remember when the consensus on here was that Nani was a significantly better player .

Not sure why you're laughing. Nani was the significantly better player at the time. Bale is a much better player now than he was even 12 months ago whereas Nani has gone backwards on the form he showed after that season he won our players player of the year.

What an odd comment. Nani was miles better than Bale two years ago. The Bale of two years ago was a good player with potential but not even close to what he is now. He's improved considerably. Additionally, Nani had a couple of absolutely sublime seasons for us, scoring or assisting a goal a game for two seasons straight. Even Bale this season is not as productive as that.

Just came looking for the Bale thread to make this observation.

Bale, increasingly, is developing into Ronaldo. The overly-built physique, the raw power, speed and directness, and the shoot on sight policy. Neither are what I'd call naturally gifted or subtle players, more the product of being supreme athletes with a dedication to practice and perfection, yielding a machine-like quality on the pitch. I wouldn't say Bale is worse in every way either - they are pretty close. Ronaldo is probably more clinical right now, but Bale seems to have slightly more variety in his game.

Even Valencia was better than him. Unfortunately, both our wingers have taken a step back this season while Bale has shown a lot of improvement.

I don't know why you are  like a buffoon.

The "he's not as good as Ronaldo" stuff is baffling me. Why is this relevant? There's only one person in the entire world who is!

he's not as good as a lot of players

no way...they still have massive depth issues to begin to even think about taking the league or CL. Given their turn-over and wages, they have zero chance of taking either the league or CL next season even if they finish 3rd this season.

he's not as good as a lot of players

It's just a comparison on Bale's playing style.

Well, yes, but it's being used as a criticism. Or a kind of dismissive way of downplaying his talent a lot of the time. No one thinks he's as good as Ronaldo. Very few people think anyone but Messi is. It's like when people say Beckham was good, but never one of the greatest players of all time. No one ever says he was! What is the point of it? It's like putting "he's not as good as Messi though" at the end of every opinion on a tricky dribbling player.

"challenging"

It's just because he's like a little boy trying to copy his hero, only he's actually an adult trying to copy a guy a few years older than him. It's embarrassing, there's no excuse for things like the free kick stance.

I think the thing with Beckham is that he attained a level of fame befitting of one of the all greats, it seems to irk some people.

The point is that the way the Brit media go on about him, you'd think he was as good as Messi not someone who's about as effective as Walcott. Hence the desire to bring some sanity to things.

 Pete. That analogy. Too much.

TBF Walcott has 18 goals and 11 assists in 29 games.

Bale has 13 goals and 7 assists in 28 games.

Although Walcott I'd say is a more streaky player. I think his goals include a hatrick in the league cup or something.

In that case, I guess Real Madrid will be in for Walcott come the summer for 40-50m.

And here comes Glaston with a dumb-ass argument.

I'll let Pete and you settle this. Please make sure it's entertaining.

one is not 'challenging' unless they have some kind of chance of winning even if it is 2 or 3 %.

spurs have 0 chance. spurs have as much chance of winning the league next year as the vermin do.

If they went into it with the squad they have now, yes. Not if they brought in good players in the 3 areas I previously mentioned.

I don't think they'd be genuine contenders but probably the sort that would be there or there abouts until March/April.

GK - Lloris, Friedel
RB - Walker, Naughton
CB - Kaboul, Verthongen, Caulker, NewCB
LB - BAE, Rose
CM - Dembele, Sandro, Holtby, Parker
RW - Lennon, NewRW
LW - Bale, Townsend
ST - Defoe, Adebayor, NewST

that's ignoring Sigurdsson and Dempsey.

Very good squad. Just needs extra quality in a few areas.

yeah if the new CB is Hummels, the new RW is nani, and the new striker is falcao or cavani.

It's a good squad, but lack of star quality really apart from Bale. I think 4th will go down right to the wire, with Arsenal edging it over Spurs. Arsenal's remaining fixtures look OK, with us at home and spurs away comfortably the hardest games. Spurs have still got Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City.

Bale's clearly a level or two above Walcott. Walcott might have just as many great games but he has far, far more poor ones. And of course most of Bale's goals are his own making. That comes with its downsides and he has become an infuriatingly selfish player in my view, but at least he's backing that up with match-winning moments on a regular occasion unlike last year. Overall I'm still not convinced he's improved that much from two years ago though.

I understand that playing alongside Defoe can make you selfish and I don't blame him for not wanting to pass to that donkey Dempsey but on the face of it it just looks like the creative side of his game has been gradually taken out of his game bit by bit. Instead of adding to his game he's just traded what made him so impressive a couple of years back - that capacity to tear teams apart as a traditional out-and-out winger - in his search to become Ronaldo 2.0.

Ronnie or Bale?

People should be saying them then!
