Guillermo Varela

That's pleasing to hear... early reports had said he looked great going forwads but question marks over defending. I take it he's sorting the latter part out, or was it bollocks anyway?

its the opposite situation... he is already a great defender, tough tackler and quite fast. Its his game going forward its not up to the level yet, but that its going to be worked out for sure.

A loan at Boca would be nice. Is that still happening?

Can we safely say this is bollocks then?:

Manchester United summer signing Guillermo Varela must improve his defensive game to make the first team step up, it has been suggested.
The Daily Mail says Varela impressed in United U21's 4-1 win over Bolton Wanderers.
Varela, a £2.5million summer acquisition, offers pace, movement and an attacking thrust from full-back, constantly overlapping and worrying opponents but the defensive side of the Uruguayan’s game requires some polish.
Varela was left with twisted blood and stretched sinews after a troublesome first-half that saw him regularly outpaced and out-thought by Bolton's excellent Tom Youngs.
The Uruguayan only appeared more comfortable in the second-half when liberated from defensive responsibilities and allowed more freedom as he was pushed forward to right midfield.

The handful of times I've seen Varela he's left me in no doubts about his defending ability. Its good. I'm not convinced he'd struggle more than Smalling or Jones playing RB for the first team, other than their obviously superior work in the air and marking set pieces. Certainly wouldn't hestitate for a second to play him in cup games

That article is indeed hyperbolic nonsense. There were a couple of instances of him getting caught a bit high early on in that game (communication issue..?) but it was tweaked and sorted and he went back to being his solid self. I must have seen him a dozen times now and I've yet to see anyone coming close to regularly twist, turn and outpace him, as the article suggests happened against Bolton.

Yep, very much like a young Rafael when you say it like that. Arguably better defensively and worse in attack?

Varela looked a bit dodgy in his first game or two but has gotten better every time I've seen him since then. Looks like he can step up to the first team in a matter of months I think.

I have to say, at first he seemed like he was getting caught out of possession. But the last couple of games I've seen of him he has really impressed me.

I wouldn't even like to speculate on how ready he is or how far he is from being Rafael's understudy, but he definitely has potential.

But I really wonder what will happen to Vermijl now though, I really like the look of him and he was impressive in his first team appearances last season.

How fast is he? Faster than Rafael? The article first stated he offered pace then argued that he was outpaced several times - sounded like a nonsense article.

He's quick enough. When does this sady get to play for us though, I'm interested to see how he does.

Huh?

I think Moyes seems intent on letting the younger players get chances, so I'm not too worried about him not getting game time, provided he is good enough. Fabio on the other hand...

Fixed my post.

Not much between 'em in that department.

He likes to try and win the ball early and intercept so can get rolled occasionally, but his recovery is excellent and he seems tenacious and brave defensively,

Sounds familiar.

If you compare to when Rafael first arrived, yups, you would be a lot less concerned about the defending and not worried at all about him sorting any deficiencies out (Rafael had more question marks on him). Going forward I don't think he is or will be as good as Rafael, but should soon be a very reliable backup for him.

I'm not sure just yet on how I rate him in attack or defence, but I think stylistically he's a lot like Rafael. I think he could go either way in both regards (Attack/Defence) but I'd like to see how he gets on with better players around him.

He has a lot of work to do to improve his attacking style. It's very basic at the moment, but his defending is really good for someone his age. Needs to balance things out, but he's got a good future with us.

Really? I think his attacking is one of his best attributes. He links up really well and puts in decent crosses. He drives the team forward at every opportunity too. I really like him now, I was a tad sceptical after his first couple of games but he's settled in really well. He has that fight in him which is mostly what reminds me of the Da Silva twins. That tenacity and unwillingness to give in, he always seems fully committed, both offensively and defensively. It'd be nice to see him in a cup game but it's unlikely with Fabio here ( that's if Fabio even gets a look in over Jones/Smalling at RB)

Yeah, I think he looks awkward when he attacks, as though he doesn't know what he's doing (but he does). Technically I think he's above a standard level, but I need to see more of him, and I think he can improve on this aspect (and I don't like being harsh). I think he's better than the Da Silva twins defensively when they first arrived, I quite like his tackling technique and he's more mature and disciplined. But I suppose I'm wanting to see him move forward with the ball more, I think we'll see that more as the season progresses.

Did he get his work permit?

I don't think you need a work permit to play for the reserves match, but I can't see him getting a work permit because surely he can't qualify for that?

I thought that was an issue or Saidy Janko (sp?) not Varela, unless I'm mistaken.

Janko is a Swiss international, he doesn't need a work permit, he needs to get an international clearance.

So why won't varela get a permit?

Varela is from Uruguay, they're not a part of EU so they need to have a work permit to play football in England.

To get a work permit, you either need to be a regular for your national team or be a "special talent". Anderson, Angelo Henriques, Miyachi all got work talents on the basis of being "special talent".

I thought playing for the national youth teams put you in that bracket too, like U20s, U21s?

I stand corrected then if that's the case.

Without work permit, the transfer couldn't have happened.

It could have and has happened before. But the fact that he's playing for the reserves and not been loaned out elsewhere suggests he did get a work permit

I remember reading that some time ago re Bruno Gomes I think.

Yeah I'm pretty sure LR7 is right. And with regards to Bruno Gomes, because he plays for Desportivo (a team infamous in Brazil for exporting young talented Brazilians) the Brazilian FA aren't keen to give him youth call ups, despite his incredible scoring record, as it would make it easier for him to leave.

Reminds me a lot of Rafael. Could be one of our better 'gambles' that we've made recently.

Definitely. Saw him twice for Uruguay U21's when I heard about the United connection and it was weird how very much alike they are. I quite liked to look of him then and it's excellent news that he's coming along.

Without a work permit or visa, Varela wouldn't be able to work and therefore, not get paid - in this case, play football. Otherwise, he'd only be here on a student visa, visitor visa etc

Yep that's why I think he got a work permit and is playing for the reserves.

I was just responding to the guy who said the transfer wouldn't have happened without work permit when that is what essentially happened with the likes of Manucho and Diouf

Don't want to derail the Varela thread but yeah you're right, that was previously thought to be the case but he got his first call up to the Brazil U17s in June http://hereisthecity.com/2013/06/26...und-wonderkid-gomes-called-into-brazil-squad/
not sure whether he's continued to the U18s.

Apparently, he's back in Uruguay for family reasons and wants to secure a loan there (according to Ovacion).

I wonder what's happened. He was coming on well, I thought.

His parents have both been seriously injured in a car crash. No wonder he wants to stay close to home. All the best, Varelas.
