Hating Lingard

How the feck is he mediocre? Look it up in the dictionary if you don’t understand the meaning
As per the dictionary -

adjective
  1. of only moderate quality; not very good.
Isn't Lingard of moderate quality? Would you say he's exceptional? :annoyed:

Isn't Lingard of moderate quality? Would you say he's exceptional? :annoyed:

I would say he some exceptional qualities that allow him to achieve at a very high level? He's an exceptionally clever, persistent, and hard working player.

Find it hilarious how the tone has changed in the Lingard convo after 2 games.

Happy for the guy though, always rated his attitude and recognised his place/use in the squad. Just hope he finds some consistency, his end product can be infuriating - but no one in the team has movement in between the lines like him. Very intelligent player.

But is he an exceptional footballer? How many teams would he slot into in the top half of the PL table?

He's been good for us recently. And if he maintains this run for the remaining part of the season, maybe I will start trusting hiM more. But, given his track record so far, I'll still be doubtful about what to expect off him in a game where he's starting. That's just me though.

He’d start for spurs, arsenal and I think Klopp would like him as he likes high pressing, good movement. City would use him as we do, squad player, Chelsea don’t use
Homegrown players so he’d be screwed there

I’d say he’s good. In football terms there are very few exceptional players in England so the majority would be good players.

Secondly in literal terms you can’t say that someone of the level to play for United is not very good. Especially one that’s worked his way through the levels - all those coaches have believed in him for a reason

We won without Lingard. He is shit didn't I tell you all. This really proves it I don't care if he scores a hattrick against City he is still shit!

Yes, because there is absolutely nothing in between mediocre and exceptional.

Yes, because there is absolutely nothing in between mediocre and exceptional.
There is - Moderately good and moderately bad. Lingard for me is moderately good.

Nothing against him, just where I think his quality resides on a scale of horrible to exceptional.

Probably given a string of games, if he manages to be consistently good, I'd push his level up to good. Right now, he's been good too few times and too inconsistently to be termed as a good player to be starting for us.

Again, I think he's a good option from the bench and probably a good starter against certain kinds of opposition.

Shocking level of Lingardism going in this thread.

You will all change your tune once the local lad secures the derby on Sunday.

Go back a decade and the same mediocre and not good enough comments were aimed at Darren fletcher yet he is looked back on as an essential squad player who contributed.

In the past week I have heard giggs, scholes and Ferdinand praise him to the hilt about his quality and he has been selected by the past 3 Utd managers plus England managers. Sure it wasn't a golden era but he still gets selected and scores in cup finals etc...
History will remember him closer to a fletcher than a wellbeck.

He gets 2 good games in and now he is "exceptional".... :wenger:

So lets start making comparisons to De Bruyne, like we did when Micki was in form. You cant can you? ... the reality is that when Micki is in great form (rarity), there is a "chance" he can be compared to the great's, but Lingards best doesnt even have a chance in the comparison table.

Lingard doesn't have the talent.... he is a work horse and that is all he will ever be. Man Utd will never be a Premier League Champ while he gets the starting #10 spot... simple as that.

Now i do support the young kid because he is giving his all and is making things happen.... which is all we can ask of Lingard. But please stop the nonsense, your making yourselves and our club look bad with this exceptional talent crap!

Hoping this is where he steps up & can become a regular first teamer. All depends if this form is a flash in the pan & he starts going MIA as he has before.

I actually fancy him to start and score again at the weekend. Just a hunch. I think he’s a total confidence player and this is his best run with us so far. He’s in far better form than miki anyway. I really enjoyed Matas performance the last night in the CL but Lingard has to start. As does young, as mad as that would have sounded at the start of the season!! I’m really enjoying the reaction Jose is getting from players lots of fans had written off.... That’s good management.

Awful post. Uniteds form up until this point in the season is similar (or even better) to the most recent premier league champions, going back i think 4/5 years.

How you can say a workhorse is all he'll ever be, i find astonishing. You sit behind a computer and watch him from your armchair, maybe twice a week and come to that conclusion, whilst peers who have all worked with him on a day to day basis have all called him a talented individual. Truly astonishing.

You are making no sense... how is anything your saying a response to the fact that Lingard isn't a work horse? .... if he didn't have talent he wouldn't be in a professional club, no shit. But relying on him as ur starting #10 every game... you have no chance at winning the Premier League. Keep your armchair comments to urself, where it applies most.

FYI, United's form is at this level because of others like De Gea, Pogba, Martial and so on... not because of Lingard. I support the kid and I do like what he brings to the club, especially the last 2 games, but please get back to reality.

Man Utd needs, deserves, and should get a dominant #10 due to its history and obvious financial flexibility.

Oh! Wonder who has contributed those goals, assists and attacking / pressing impetus the last few games then! Nobody has called Lingard (seriously) a Messi or Ronaldo or even KdB level player. That said, it would be myopic and pig-headed to deny his impact for us. Lingard is extreme talented by most measures and combines that with exceptional work ethic and application. He’s enthusiastic and even on his worst days can be counted on to give it his all. He would be a certain starter for clubs like Arsenal and all those below them.

Would I want him as our first-choice 10 when launching a CL assault? Nope, will want better and I admit that through the summer, I kept telling everyone that if Lingard was starting games for us, we could give up on the title. He's proved me wrong though (for now) and I'm happy to see he's doing so much better than I thought he would / could. He's been moved to his preferred spot and upped his game just as Mata and Mkhi have lowered theirs. He is currently adding more to our team than Rashford, Mata and Mkhi. I'm sad saying this about Mata and specially Mkhi, but it's a fact. It's no coincidence that Pogba apart, the big differentiator to our performances has been when we've had Lingard on vs having Mkhi (guaranteed to lose the ball / fall over etc.) or Rashford (where's the 10? Oh, is that him shadowing Martial and Young on the LW?) or Mata (no pace, can't press).

Even when we inevitably strengthen our options at 10 in the summer / winter, I would want to have Lingard on our bench. I’d go as far as to say that it’s essential for any club with title designs to have players as committed and motivated as him (with the talent too clearly) in the squad. Do go and count the goals he’s already contributed to our cause in winning cups and tight games. Also, please check on how we fare with and without him. All this while he's never complained or lost his smile about being pushed wide, benched, left out and moved around like a rag doll. He's brought a lot to us this season. Can he do it consistently? I wouldn't expect it or bet anything on it, but to dismiss his contributions to date with such alacrity points towards a mind that's so made up that it's unwilling to acknowledge what's staring you in the face. Do compare what we look and play like with him vs when we have Mkhi or Mata in that position.

Stop hating. The lad is a local boy, has had terrible luck with injuries earlier, has had to move around the pitch to accommodate “better” players but is clearly one I would pick ahead of Rashford, Mkhi and Mata right now.

Some of these comments are frankly embarrassing!

Lets take time out of our day to slate a United player who’s currently in good form and scoring.

Good logic!

I read this on here quite a lot but surely not every United fan watches from an armchair?

For a start depending on their living room set up and TV position i'm sure a lot of people choose to sit in the middle or on either end of a sofa. No doubt some will be on ottomans/stools or even on the floor if they are young and/or come from big families and there's not enough seats. Then of course you'll have the lazy bastards who watch in bed, weirdo's who like to watch while standing up and probably the odd loon on a ceiling mounted swing, exercise ball or something else crazy. And all that's before we even get into dining chairs, office chairs, bean bags, benches etc.

I'm interested does a persons choice of furniture to sit on while watching United make their views on football more or less valid in your opinion?

My main gripe with him has been the lack of goal threat and creativity.
The last couple of games has seen him step up a level so of course I'm happy about that.

I thought I was a harsh critic on Lingard until I read the last few pages :D

Look, we know he isn't the long term answer at #10 and I more than anyone want us to sign someone in Summer to play that position. But we have to play the players in form at all positions, and Lingard has been very good the last 2 games so he should continue until that isn't the case anymore.

The discontented Lingard critic finds no easy chair.

Who would he replace from the first choice lineup at Arsenal, Spurs or Liverpool? As I don’t think he’d be first choice at any of those clubs.

I have been critical of Lingard in the past but I admit I was wrong and he is starting to prove his worth. However I agree with you here, he wouldnt start over Mane, Coutinho and Salah. He wouldnt start over Eriksen and Alli but would probably start for them depending on their formation and the same for Arsenal. Iwobi, and Welbeck all start for Arsenal half the time and Lingard is no worse than them 3.

I do agree with you, I think Lingard would get plenty of games at those clubs, but just if everyone was fit and the strongest 11 being picked I don’t think he’d be in it.

Choice of funiture has no impact on the validation of someones football views.

However in this instance, sitting at home and watching united twice a week compared to former professional players of the highest level, does have an impact on the validation of someones views.

You cant make a statement like "He'll never be anything more than a workhorse" when you do this.

I used to feel the same about these professional players' views, but if you look at it closely, they always raved about Rooney and his performances throughout his career at United. Even when our fans on caf were slating him. Since I am a big fan of Rooney, I used to side with the professionals and their views. But clearly the fans were seeing something that they didn't like with Rooney.

And the team definitely seems to have improved since his departure, so maybe they did have a point?

Just saying that the professionals, especially ex-United players will always be biased no matter how hard they try.

Get your point, and there will always be bias, but thats not a good example. Rooney is United and Englands all time top scorer and has won everything there is to win except a world cup, and ended up captaining both sides. Despite fans frustrations, he clearly was a good player.

Players will always have their biases, but i'll rate their opinion of a player over someones who clearly hasnt got a clue.

Oh well in that case then it was strange that you were so specific about the type of chair you think he sits in while watching United.

I'm not saying i agree with that guys opinion on Lingard but over the many years i have watched ex players and managers (from a variety of different chairs in case you are wondering) express their views i have come to one main conclusion playing and sometimes even managing at the highest level of football doesn't stop someone having ridiculous opinions on football and at times spewing a load of nonsensical shite that would fit right in with all the shite posted on here.

Just a few days ago a group of ex players and managers on BT didn't have a clue why CSKA's goal was allowed, which says it all really. Some ex players don't have much more of a clue than anyone on here about football, a few of them probably even less.

You cant make a statement like "He'll never be anything more than a workhorse" when you do this.

Sorry mate you've lost me here what is he can't do if he wants to voice an opinion?

Scott Mctominay will united greatest ever midfielder.

Pogba will be seen as nothing more than a big langly target in the middle by the end of his united career.

England will absolutely destroy every team they play at next years world cup and go on to win the competition, and their next 5 international competitions.

All absolutely baseless "opinions" that unless you have a crystal ball, will never know how accurate until the time comes.

Jesse lingard will be nothing more than a workhorse, is that kind of statement. Unless he has a crystal ball somewhere, an "opinion" that strong has no validation whatsoever.

Ok i get you now mate, yeah it might be a baseless opinion but everyone has them at times yourself included no doubt. But here's the thing this is a internet football forum thats basically the whole point of it, expressing opinions however baseless some of them might seem.

OK, Lingered starts as long as he is effective and contributing, and back to the bench when he is less so, or even taken off the bench list if he is not contributing at all. What is wrong with that? If Lingard has cost us 80m or 200K/week wage then perhaps fans would be furious for such status, but this will not be the first - just ask Rooney, Shaw, MK, Mata, Blind, and the list can go on and on. Player should not be selected automatically just because he is the Captain, or he is expensive. He should start only when he can contribute to the team.

Find it hilarious how the tone has changed in the Lingard convo after 2 games.

This place is a joke for this.

I've always kinda liked Lingard as a squad player and happy for him to be starting at the moment if he's playing well, but the whole perspective changes on players so quickly here and everything in the future will be based off a few games where that player did really well rather than how they play regularly (Herrera is a good example).
