Is Sir Alex preparing our number 10 for a future in midfield?

Rooney would be great in midfield in the near future. It's not his best position as of today, but if that solves our current midfield problems, who cares about what his best position actually is.
We've got plenty of options up front. Someone had to play "out" of position. He's not the first one and won't be the last. It might actually prove to be a genius move by the gaffer

Agreed. I could see him becoming one of the best in the world in that position. Saf has said it's only tempoary but he is keen to try it as Rooney shone in a deeper role at the tail end of last season.

Chicharito, Berbatov, Welbeck, Owen and Macheda is hardly scraping the barrel is it?

Our forward line withouth Rooney loses a lot of its potency.I do rate the players that we have up front but Rooney is the key to the attacking game.
He's one of the rare players we have who can score a goal out of nothing

Without Rooney it's certainly missing a World Class centre forward, yes.

We have great options in attack, but make no mistake, were Rooney to switch to CM full time, we would need to go and break the bank for a forward to replace him.

Or break the bank for a talent like Gotze to play in front of him, just behind Chicharito.

I actually quite like Rooney in midfield. He has the attributes to play there and has more influence on the game. But he isnt going to move there full time. He is our best player and also happens to be uber versatile. So he will be moved around from time to time. As I hear Duncan Edwards was too.

Well yeah, that's basically what I was saying. We'd have to break the bank to buy a replacement for Rooney's position, someone like Götze to play in the hole.

Only problem we then have is:

a) Will Götze be as good as Rooney in that role?

b) Will Rooney be as good in CM as a specialist midfielder that we could have used the Götze money on.

Personally I think none of it makes any sense, it's not like we played great football with Rooney in there is it? despite some lovely hollywood balls we've been pretty shit with him in there. Give me a mix of Cleverley, together with either Anderson or Carrick with Rooney AHEAD of them please, that's where the great football and all of Rooney's goals at the start of the season came from.

are you actually suggesting we move rooney to midfield, a position he has a whole two games experience in, and replace him with an attacking midfielder?!

what a silly idea when we could just bring a midfielder in to solve the problem

in a summer when we expressed a clear interest in sneijder and missed out/lost interest I'm sure we'll be looking to fill that position in the summer

rooney playing these says more about injuries and current form - it won't be a long term thing

Exactly, this is it in a nutshell.

We can go out and buy MANY better CM than Rooney.

We can't buy any better forward.

Simples really.

We dont even have to buy for that. Cleverley is a better central midfielder than rooney.

Correct

No, I'm simply adding to what Sharky said, showing what great lengths United would be going to for a needless and pointless exercise. The idea is beyond silly in the extreme really Rooney will only play as an emergency midfielder under SAF, not as a permanent one.

Why isn't Berbatov moving further down the pitch being discussed here?

Because my nan could muscle him off the ball (not a euphemism)

Well that's bollocks, his technique for holding on the the ball is one of his attributes. He couldn't play in the middle though because of his positioning, workrate and passing ability. He's just not a midfielder.

It's just a reflection of how poor our CM is.

Rooney is our best CM by a mile and he's not even supposed to be one

I think to fairly compare him with others we would need to see Rooney play in midfield for a few months. For all we know, he is already at his best in that position

wtf?

Absolutely totally fecking ridiculous comment.

Carrick has been integral to 3 CL finals and plenty of PL wins, Rooney has played a couple of times in CM in games where we as a team have actually played pretty fecking shite. Had Rooney not been in midfield spraying way too many Hollywood balls then these were exactly the type of games that would've left the caf saying, "it's our SHITE midfield's fault".

Totally disagree. Carsick was very good but has lost something in the last two seasons. He hasn't scored in 61 games ffs

You cannot compare Rooney with any of our midfielders because the difference in terms of matches played as a CM is too huge to make any sort of an accurate comparison

What do you disagree with?

That Carrick has played in CM whilst we've made 3 CL wins and won lots of league titles?

Or do you totally disagree that Rooney has only played 2 full games in central midfield?

Or that we as a team have actually played like shit in the games with Rooney in midfield?

:wenger:

I don't know how people on the basis of two matches(both against average opposition) can decide that Rooney is a better midfielder than Carrick.

Makelele scored 18 goals in 607 career games, what a poor player FFS.

Hence my statement "Absolutely totally fecking ridiculous comment."

Some people on here are nuts I swear, totally utterly bonkers!

Get a grip some of you. Carricks inconsistencies frustrate the life out of me. And andersons recent form leaves me bewildered. And we have weaknesses in midfield, of course we do. But rooney is NOT our best central midfielder ffs. It's an absurd suggestion.

rooney in midfield reminds me a bit of beckham....

good passer, some nice cameos, hollywood crossfield balls and a competent player in that position....

but obviously not their best position and not good enough to play for Manchester United in that position on a regular basis.....

Antonio Valencia has been impressive at right back when we've got injury problems - its not his best position though

It's a lot cheaper these days to buy another striker than to buy a fantastic attacking midfielder who can score and create. Must be those cheap Glazers forcing Fergie to do this to save a few quid... The bastards...
