I think it makes sense in that this ought to be the lowest hanging fruit in terms of improvement. Most teams at this level don't drop points from a winning position. We dropped more from a winning position than anyone else in Europe.

So basically if we can stop doing that and otherwise perform as we did last season, we can expect 89 points.

It's not going to be be quite so linear of course, but bring it low and win one or two more on top and it is basically a case of having made up that difference.

I am not sure that will win the title, but if manage that there can be no complaints about our performance.
 
Well done Klopp. Here's another one for you - wait for it - if you'd have won all the games you lost, you'd have won the title.

It would probably look more or less the same. At least in the top end. First goal generally decides most games. We're abnormally bad at it
 
That reminds me of that Liverpool fan on a fan cam outside Anfield, after we drew with them 0.0. 'If you take away the result, we won the game".

Klopp deserves believerpool, they are a deluded match.

Why? Jose never had a superstar at Utd that he could sell.
We had to dredge out Morgan, Bastian etc for peanuts, thats the difference in net spend and both scenarios had nothing to do with the current managers so why should it be a plus in either column?
We all lose big players to Spain, it's nothing heroic.

You were a fax machine away from losing de gea, and are this summer having pogba linked with juve and martial wanting to leave. But I guess you the value of our squad has just been higher for a number of years?

But you are obviously wumming based on your answer to the question: "do you also reckon selling Coutinho has had no impact on the quality of our squad?" being "he'd just lucky he was able to sell his best player", as if that were ever the case. Are you dreaming of how lucky you'll get if only you could sell de gea and pogba and then spend it all to boost your gross spend? Is that your idea of a great transfer window?
 
I've been "Klopp watching" quite a bit recently. I can understand why Liverpool fans love him, he's an upbeat happy manager who is passionate about the club and everything else that comes along with LFC.

But being likable does not guarantee you a job. He should really be looking at an FA cup minimum next season and will be forgiven if he does not win the league or CL.

Mourinho has already had the first dig and rightly so. Keep out of our business you hypocrite.
 
I wonder in which context he's said this as it would be a pretty weird statement if it came up isolated. I hate "If ..." arguments in football because they make no sense at all, but I think the underlying point here is that if we can fix our recurring problems from the past (i.e. not retaining a lead / giving away easy goals way too often), we won't be too far off City.

Difference is that our big players leave us mostly because they got older and your big players leave you because they want a step up. Every team loses big players and need to spend money to replace those players.

That’s the thing (and I don’t like Klopp at all for that matter) but most of his demeanour/rhetoric in the press is just very optimistic. He believes in the style of football his team plays and all he really ever says is, ‘if we iron out the silly mistakes we’ll win’. This isn’t a ‘if we’d have scored that offside goal at Old Trafford’ kind of statement. He wavers between, ‘we should have won’, ‘it was my fault’ and ‘a few silly mistakes we can fix’ - always protects the team and through that tries to foster a good team spirit

Therein lies the problem. He has cultivated an excuse problem.
It was too windy.
The grass was too dry.
They should have a goal disallowed for offside last season.
He had concussion.

It actually gives the players an excuse wall to hide behind instead of actually dealing with the problems.

Not sure about the word infinitely maybe greatly.

You can say yes to all of that but it kind of means diddely squat if he finishes the season trophyless which was the point I was trying to make.

As much as I like to have a chuckle at Rafa he brought you a CL and Fa cup with a weak team.

The net spend will be kind to him because of the Coutinho sale but he's pretty much gone all out this season. I think even if he does not win what people say he should he will get another year to make some more tweaks.

Not as simple as low hanging fruit. Liverpool aren't setup to defend, so if they did sit deep they'd lose and its also not easy to just get more goals either.

As others have said its a pointless and irrelevant statement. Similar to saying if United turned all their draws to wins we'd only be 7 points behind City.

Liverpool are improving under Klopp, but he's not a standout in terms of that. Guardiola has clearly improved his team the most with Mourinho and Klopp on a similar level (United have improved in the league, while Liverpool have improved in the CL, depending on the person one will be better than the other).

I'd also say that Liverpool have yet to reach the level they did under Rogers where you almost won the league. Your attack was much better back then, and you looked dead on for the title until the last stretch where a couple of freak results happened like Crystal Palace and Slippy G.

Don't come here using common sense.. Don't you realize that people are having a great time twisting every word Klopp says into 'He's a moron'..

Of course it's not just the 'what if' game.. He's speaking of an area, where he thinks we can, and need to improve. And it's an obvious area. Glad that he has some focus on it. Gonna be interesting, if he'll take a more pragmatic approach when we take the lead in matches.

City won the league twice in the five years before Guardiola took over. You can argue he's improved his team the most because of all the records they broke last season but he did nothing special in his first season (was even laughed at by many on here) and did something that previous managers did as well with a much worse squad than Guardiola has at his disposal.

Liverpool, on the other hand, finished in the top 4 once in the six years before Klopp took over. Now we've done it twice in a row, while getting to three cup finals in the process (lost them all, I'll say it myself before you mention it). Our attack wasn't better under Rodgers either, Rodgers was very very lucky that he had the best striker in the world and a fit Sturridge to benefit from that striker.
 
He's passionate,quite open, a bit mad and says some daft things every now and again.
I'm baffled as to how he attracts such vitriol in this thread and imagine most of the critics would be his staunchest supporters in an alternate universe where he took over at Old Trafford.

Some of the reactions in here to what he’s said are so irrational.

I’m pretty sure he’s trying to make a point that we need to stop dropping points from winning positions, which is an issue we’ve had.
 
He could finish 11 points behind the leaders for 5 years straight and Liverpool fans will eat it up.

Do you mean to what he said in this instance or the staggering volume of absolute tripe he’s been talking since he arrived in the premier league?

Thanks for clarifying, my gut feeling Would be that his long list of absurd comments make the threshold for ridicule much smaller. Same as when mourinho says anything tiny that can be perceived as being negative
 
Very interesting season coming up for them. They had an excellent season. Lots of goals and exciting play and a CL final.

However, the book will be out on how to play them. Weather the storm at the beginning of each half. Play direct to beat their press. Hold out until they tire and then have a go.

We played them perfectly. Jose got undue stick for being boring against them. Well we missed our best player in the first game and then won the second game.

You have to go direct against them unless you have a midfield with high technical ability. Against a packed defense they have a hard time scoring like 98% of all teams. You make a mistake in any vulnerable position and they make you pay. Nullifying this is not anti football it is smart tactics.

Will Salah score as much as last season? Will the new recruits mess with the chemistry of last season? We shall see.

That’s been the blueprint to beat us since Klopp arrived. Few teams have the personnel and the know how to pull it off though.

Having said that, Spurs, City and United simply outplayed us when we lost those three games. Swansea was the only game we lost where we genuinely struggled to get through a tight defensive setup.
