La Liga 2013-2014

Sevilla playing M'Bia and Iborra as the CM duo with Rakitic in the hole. Terrible tactics, Iborra should've been off about thrice already and Rakitic's influence is limited. Could do with subbing on Marin and move Rakitic into CM.

I would be very surprised if that's true.. Atletico had a very bad second half last season.. They were second in the first half and ended up a distant third at the end of the season..

Barcelona finished the season with 100 points, 24 more than Atletico, I don't think Atletico were 25 points behind Barcelona at the end of the first half of the season, because I'm pretty sure they were still second at and a few weeks after the first half ended.

Don't have the numbers right now, but would imagine Barcelona outscored them by some 10 points in the second half of last season.

Yeah, you're right (I would guess) because Real Madrid didn't overtake Atletico until around Christmas and I don't remember Barca dropping that many points.

It was a comment on the radio and I wasn't paying that much attention to the context. It might have been the two Madrid teams he was comparing. Or maybe just wrong  I thought it sounded strange.

How do you rate him, out of interest? And what are the chances of him being available/willing to move in January?

I've not paid enough attention to him to be honest. I only really start focusing on individual players after we've been linked to them or after they've had a stand out game against one of the big two or whatever.

HT Espanyol 0-0 Real Madrid
Ronaldo continuing where he left off on Thursday, missing everything.

A significant game for Madrid. If they win tonight, then they're 3 points behind Atletico and Barcelona. Psycholgically at least, a better place to be than they've managed all season.

Have you seen much of Thievy? Apparently we had/have some interest in him and looks like they will be offloading him due to him being omitted from the squad today.

That is some of the laziest set piece defending I've seen all season. There were about 3 men completely free.

Really? I've not paid much attention to him. He's not an obvious talent or an obvious goalscorer - though looking at his minutes/appearances I may be being harsh. He's big and he's young and maybe someone who's watched him properly saw something more. It could just be he doesn't get on with the Espanyol manager.

Anyway he got fined this week for not showing up at training. He phoned in sick the next day and the club doctors have taken over. The manager said something like, "it might be better for him to leave," at the press conference.

Carvajal has been so poor. Broke down so many of Madrid's attacks.

Yes, I think Madrid were expecting him to be "ready to go" after his year in the Bundesliga, but he still looks miles off to me.

Arbeloa is the only real first team cover for any of the back 4 positions though and I suspect Ancelotti's keeping him wrapped in cotton wool. Which is why I won't quite believe the Coentrao deal until I see him at OT.

And Ronaldo misses another 1 on 1!

Definitely the worst I've seen Ronaldo in years. He's killing my Madrid-1 bet here singlehandedly.

Great weekend for Madrid. It'll come down to el clasico and the Atleti games. The 3 teams don't look like dropping points anywhere else.

As I said it before, that last minute goal for Madrid against Barcelona in the Camp Nou this season could prove to be a crucial goal.

If Madrid beats Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu (which I think they would), then Madrid will (most likely) immediately jump into first place (if things stay the way they're now)..

And yes, I refuse to acknowledge that Atletico Madrid have a chance to win it this year.

RM at the moment are looking the more likely to drop points though, esp. their away results have been very poor by their standards... I think I'm right in saying they've only won 1 away game by more than a 1 goal difference (a 5-0 thrashing of Almería)! And they've still got Athletic, Real Sociedad, Sevilla and Atlético to play away along with places like Celta and Málaga which aren't that easy to come away with a win from. All that said though, I'm also fairly sure Atlético won't keep this up for 4 more months -- unfortunately.

Any of the 3 could potentially end the season in 3rd place with more than 90 points. That would be mental.

Ronnie on a barren run. He's played 2 matches without scoring.

Yeah, the gossip shows are speculating that the Ballon D'Or stuff has got inside his head. He's supposed to have been as jumpy as a cat in the training sessions and his head's just in the wrong place. They think he'd resigned himself to losing and then the glimmer of a win came back. Now, of course, Madrid have talked him into going and he's hyper as hell. Allegedly.

Then again he may just be off form. It looks worse with Ronaldo than most players, because he still runs into the same places, and thinks the same shots/moves are on, so all he actually does is get in the way. Most of the others just dissappear quietly into the background.

Villarreal absolutely battering La Real, 4-0 now, Uche with his second (after scoring a hat-trick last week), but it's been Gio running the show, 2 goals and 2 assists, just laid on a gorgeous reverse pass for Uche's 2nd. The battle for the 4th CL spot is flaring up again. With this result Villarreal leapfrog Real Sociedad and gain an important advantage in the head-to-head tie breaker.

As things stand,

Athletic, 36 pts
Villarreal, 34 pts
Real Sociedad, 32 pts
Sevilla, 30 pts

While I was busy typing all that up there's been 2 more goals

5-1 now, first Villarreal with a shot from the left winger Moi Gómez, then La Real from a corner, Agirretxe.

Extraordinary scoreline tonight. Amazing to see Villareal in this form after a year in Liga 2.

It really emphasizes the philosophy of that club, always keeping their style (somewhat like contemporary Barça in that regard). Even though they've had some really outstanding individuals over the years, they've always functioned as a real team in the truest sense. The whole being bigger than the sum of its parts and all that... can't help but have a soft spot for them since about '04 :D (even if the original cause for their success was their president's capital)

It's impressive. For what's really a small club they run a strong B team (that got relegated to the 2Bs when Villareal went into Liga 2 - a double blow to them) and they've got a strong youth structure as well.

This weekend:

From Marca so times are Spain
Friday
Málaga - Valencia 21:00 (8pm UK)

Saturday
Betis - R. Madrid 16:00
Elche - Rayo 18:00
Granada - Osasuna 20:00
Espanyol - Celta 22:00

Sunday
Getafe - R. Sociedad 12:00
Villarreal - Almería 17:00
Levante - Barcelona 19:00
Atlético - Sevilla 21:00
Athletic - Valladolid 22:00

Betis are bottom of La Liga so they shouldn't be able to do too much damage to Madrid, however they're also Betis and the crowd might yet get a performance out of its players.

Levante will be playing Barca three times in the next couple of weeks (Liga and Copa) - a great chance for them to study the freshly repaired Messi. Lucky old them :smirk:

Atletico, at home, should be able to continue their extraordinary form against Sevilla. However Sevilla are an erratic team rathe than a crap one, so you never know.

feck me what a goal.

Ramos is an infuriatingly shite defender to be playing for such a good side.
