Let's all Laugh at England

Interestingly Pogba admitted they underestimated Portugal in the Euros after beating Germany, which was very honest of him. I think they'll be on their game on Sunday. I said if England didn't win I'd want France to win because of Pogba, hope they get it done.

Yes I'd like to see them do it. I thought Pogba was great vs Belgium - he (and Kante) will need a similar performance to deal with Brozovic, Rakitic & Modric on Sunday.

Posted this is another thread too. There's much more arrogance and smugness coming from the Croatian media and players than there ever was for England who's "It's coming home" song was more of a pisstake.

I know a lot of people thought England were "arrogant", but not a peep on the Croatian arrogance?

'The national broadcaster, HRT, started its post-match programme with presenters and studio guests jumping around and chanting, while Robert Prosinecki, a member of Croatia’s bronze-winning side in 1998, said: “We murdered the English in the second half!”. Josko Jelicic, Croatia’s self-styled answer to Gary Lineker, added: “They [England] have nothing to cry about – they were knocked out by the future world champions. We played a mature game, the English were unbelievably inferior”.

The Vecernji list newspaper went with the headline “We knocked the English down, Croatia are in the World Cup final!”, with Zeljko Jankovic writing how Croatia and France will now decide “who plays the best football on the planet at the moment”. It turned out to be rhetorical as he answered it himself by adding: “It’s Croatia, don’t even doubt that!”

Vecernji’s website devoted an unusual amount of space to gloating over the fate of the losing team, with headlines such as “Football’s not coming home”, “The arrogance hit them back”, “The English are sore losers” and even published a photo gallery titled “Look how the English cry after losing to Croatia” with pictures of downbeat players and fans.

“France, who are better than England, can hardly stop them”, wrote Drazen Antolic. “That will be a true final, a top clash between the two sides who have shown the most at the tournament.”

To be honest I never saw that type of arrogance and gloating coming out of England. You'd think they didn't scrape past very average Denmark and Russia teams on penalties or the so-called overrated, terrible English team.

So surely the first game they play a good team in the KO stages is Sunday? Let's see what happens. All of this will come back to bite them as they will be crying on Sunday and making excuses no doubt. France will play them off the park and probably have Croatia with a negative goal difference in the KO stages.

Amazing stuff. I don't want to hear another word about bloody English journos again.

Gutted last night, as I felt I’ll maybe never see England win a major tourney in my lifetime. Today I felt better after a grueling day in the office. Fair play to everyone who wants to stick the boot in, but do mind that quite a few decent folks, and some absolute wankers, are suffering.
Congrats to @No Idea For Nickname And @Ban and the rest of our Croatian contingent.

I’ve been repeating the same argument ad nauseum. People on here are either English speakers (Brits, Irish, Americans) or non-English speakers whose main foreign language is English. They have no idea what the media is like in other countries. Try listening to Russian TV when Russia are playing - it makes Ian Wright sound like Ban Ki-Moon.

I preferred England to lose only because of the drama and fallout after would be more entertaining than Croatia losing. At the end of the day it's just a bunch of men who you don't know trying to kick a ball between a bunch of sticks with random rules against a bunch of other men who you don't know, there's no point getting negative feelings over it.

To be fair our anthem is sh*te, Rule Britannia or Jerusalem would be much better

Rule Britannia?

FFS. . . Gimme a break.

America rules the waves and you were slaves to the Romans.

“Football is not a matter of life and death. It’s much more serious than that”
Bill Shankly

You’re right and 24 hours later it seems a lot less serious but there’s nothing like football (particularly international football) for getting you emotional about people you’ve never met and about something you have no control
over. For an England fan, it’s been like meeting an old flame from whom you’d grown estranged.

Next up - to try and care about United again. I’m not sure Jose is the romantic type.

To be fair to Croatia, considering only the time since they have become an indipendent country, they have been more successful than England when it comes to footy.

So has Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Uruguay etc..Not exactly setting the bar high although Croatia does produce some great footballers for such a small country.

This is the problem with England. Not the players but the media and the pundits. It is not enough to go down fighting and everyone putting in a good shift. This is the real life and England had an opportunity to be the Final and they never had a better chance and probably would not for a very long time.
No one should be happy for losing no matter how glorious or how hard they fought. Everyone should be gutted that England failed to progress to the Final. Now all this adulation would make everyone accept that this is OK for England. Sorry to say but its a bit like Arsenal and Wenger now with like qualifying for the CL to be the criteria. Yes if the criteria is qualifying for the Euros or the WC then it was a good job.
England beat every team they were expected to beat.

Thanks mate. I know it's easy for me to say but chin up, your boys had a good tournament and can hold their head up.

It doesn't matter what Bill Shankly says, and football is not the only way to get people emotional about people you've never met and events you have no control over, not even close. Having negative feelings because a bunch of people aren't better at something than other people are is a horrible way of thinking.

Ok, but the same applies to United, no? Otherwise, why bother watching if you don’t care what happens? And it’s not negative feelings (England did their best and Croatia won fair and square), just not quite the high it would have been had England made it to a final at last.

It has nothing to do with not caring, it's about having perspective when things don't go the way you wanted. And there's been plenty of negative feelings after seeing the reactions online, although it doesn't apply to every England fan of course.

But if your team has just narrowly lost a first WC semi-final in 28 years and you face a load of green smiley, LOL, “you’re shit” posts, what exactly do you expect the response to be?

My opinion : You did good but Croatia is better side at the moment. Semifinal is more than you could hope for before WC.

Your youth is great, U19 and U17 are great (Sessignon should have been playing even now but that is not so importantl). Your main problem is that backbone of your team never won anything. All those players from Totenham are great but they have no experience in winning anything while other players play in teams where foreigners are main stars. I beleive that you will win one of 2 next world cups but you have to provide more space in PL to your players or hope that Totenham wins PL or Pochettino makes his guys even better.

Edit: I was talking about people who still have negative feelings even after 24 hours. I don't mind heat of the moment reactions as long as it's not fatal.

Apart from a penalty shoot out win, the only semi-decent team that England won was Sweden in this World Cup.

So England basically only won against terrible sides and yet the English media hyped them as potential world champions.

I must say it was refreshing watching an English team without any player acting like a spoilt diva though. Southgate's selection based on form and not reputation was perhaps the best thing that has happened for English football in years.

Come on do the England posters here really believe the rest of the world hates them because "it's coming home" or colonial past as if there aren't other countries in Europe who also have a colonial past?

Reality is the negative reactions come from the fact being English a universal language and the English media being so global everyone knows what their pundits say and sometimes they get a bit excited as soon England is progressing during the competition.

Is that so different from other nations or other pundits? Maybe not, its like for example in Portugal the media only respected Spain or Uruguay and didn't mentioned Morocco or Iran, even if the players or manager don't think the same way.

For example watching a game betwen Colombia and Senegal I heard Danny Murphy saying England doesn't have nothing to fear from those teams, you can take it both ways, I can think he is dismissing other teams because they aren't Germany or Brazil, on the other hand why do they have to be always political correct if it is what they think?

Then there is always the smaller countries syndroma, I cannot speak for Croatia, but when it is Portugal against bigger countries a lot of times the media likes to show dismissive comments coming from the other side to create a siege mentality, "They are all against us" "We are going to teach them a lesson", Mourinho was the first master with this at Porto, while Scolari mastered it with Portugal, does this really makes a difference?

Perhaps not, but I remember that famous game on 2006 in Nuremberg between Portugal and Netherlands where this siege mentality was visible during the match, did it mattered to win?

Don't know, but when you are on short tournaments representing your nation sometimes if you don't have all the same weapons as your so called bigger opponents you have to create other scenarios to win.

This just to say forget the notion everyone hates us, in other countries the media also have arrogant pundits dismissive of other countries, at the end of the day England also pays the price of their media having a global presence around the world.

By the way, the day when you win a major tournament who do you think will have a bigger meltdown? Will it be the rest of Europe, South America, or maybe Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland will be all very happy with the outcome?

Delighted England are out. Was quite happy to see them do well but "It's coming home" was just flat out ridiculous and tedious really done my nut in. Imagine had they actually beat a team that weren't whipping boys or actually won the tournament.

Hasn't this been posted ? England tried to score when Croatia celebrating their 2nd goal.

Embarrassing. Do they even know the rule ? No ref would allow it nor give signal to start the game while other team celebrating in a fricking World cup semi final.
Those two were Rashford and Lingard. Hope Jose give them a proper hairdryer treatment.

Yes, poor winners and I suspect they will likely be poor losers on Sunday.
So few headlines from some journos and every country have those kind, makes us poor winners?
Some English pundits did say they have nothing to fear from Croatia before the game.
And Owen said something like England should have been in the final.
So you're basically trying to portray us more arrogant which is downright silly. YOu've never seen that kind of arrogance from English media? Are you having a laugh?
There's no more or less arrogant, just silly journos and tabloids.

Prosinečki didn't say we murdered you and Jeličić is like that, he makes silly claims, tries to be funny.

Oh give over. It was only a bit of fun, the fanzones were loving it and people were out on the streets chanting. Brilliant 3 weeks.

Yep.

The reason England's arrogance is being called out is because it was the on display prior to the match.

There has been a strange rumour going around since the beginning of the tournament that unless a team has at least one player on the pitch during their goal celebrations, it's possible for the opposing team to take the kick off. This has lead to some peculiar incidents.

https://www.thesun.co.uk/world-cup-...-england-sneaky-equaliser-croatia-celebrated/

It is obviously not consistent with the laws of the game, but it seems a number of players at the World Cup genuinely believe it is (probably after watching the Portugal-Spain game).

Infamous might be more apt. Most disgraceful match from both sides I think I ever watched. That match is why I've rooted against Portugal and Holland ever since then. I can't even remember who won that match and probably will forget 10 seconds after you tell me. That's because I always believe neither team deserved to win. That match didn't have a winner, just two disgraceful losers.

Facebook pages like Ladbible and Sportsbible constantly posting 'It's coming home' memes have made the world hate the English haha. The sheer amount of it got daft to be fair.

Reason why you support Arsenal then, soft club, soft fans.
