This time last season (October-ish):
1. We had a new manager in his first season, introducing an alien type of football to our players (we were comfortable with hoofball)
2. We spent big on Borini and Allen, and still had the likes of Cole, Carroll and Downing lingering
3. Downing never, ever got injured
4. Henderson didn’t have a clue what role he had under Rodgers, neither did Rodgers
5. Reina, Skrtel and Agger had dropped us plenty of premier league points by this stage (Utd, City, etc) – see 1. above
6. Suarez was our ONLY saviour – and he’d just returned from the Olympics with almost no pre-season
7. Lucas was on the form of his life to get a season long injury at this stage
8. Gerrard was still playing Hollywood balls, despite our new way of playing (old habits, etc)
9. We hadn’t hit double figures in premiership points
Now:
1. Utd, City and Chelsea are in the same position we were last season (new manager, new playing style)
2. Players are more comfortable in Rodger’s tactics (either 4411, 352 or 4231)
3. Borini, Carroll and Downing sold, replacements are somewhat better (Moses on loan for a start)
4. Henderson is a driving force, covering for both Lucas and Gerrard
5. Mignolet, Toure and even Skrtel have saved us numerous possible dropped points
6. Sturridge has been our ONLY saviour this season…but we still have Suarez…and Coutinho
7. Gerrard and Lucas still a concern, not cost us yet…see 4. above
8. Almost double number of points this season compared to last, however tough run of fixtures now to come
9. We have scraped close wins but not peaked. Johnson, Coutinho and SAS yet to play together
This isn’t a cry to winning the premier league or even finishing top four confidently. It’s an assessment of why we had a shitty run last year and the quiet good job done by the board, the ex-Man City scouts and Rodgers (Brenton to you lot) thus far. Had we actually signed Mkhitarian or Diego Costa God knows what would have happened.
