Van Gaal: The verdict

  • 1) Sack him now.

  • 2) Sack him at the end of the season.

  • 3) Let him see out his contract and part ways after that.

  • 4) Extend his contract.

  • Undecided (between 1 and 2).

  • Undecided (between 2 and 3).

  • Undecided (between 3 and 4, if things improve before his contract expires, extend).

Surely he has to realise by now that his philosophy doesn't work in England, for whatever reasons?

If we take as fact, then Giggs is also spineless for not challenging LVG on this. He'll never be a manager if he just sits there and does what he's told.

Some moan in the other thread about LVG not stalking the sidelines - Giggs doesn't do it either.

Which all just makes me stay with the opinion that Giggs isn't a 'leader' at all.
I know a year and a half is a long time but if you can cast your mind back that far and remember his caretaker spell he was regularly out on the touch line. The whole criticism of Giggs for not doing things he can't or for supposedly thinking things he's never said baffles me.

Your post is difficult to read.

Your last line though - what's stopping him doing that now? You think Van Gaal will be angry?

Bullshit that is. We lack the quality up front, the fact we are relying on a 19 year old lad to produce the magic emphasises that. You can't blame everything on tactics, we need at least two attacking players to come in.
It was Van Gaal who sold or loaned out all our attackers. We can argue all day long about whether they had the quality required but it's better than nothing or Fellaini thrown on up front.

What annoys me is that when he does leave and a superior manager does come in here and we start playing better football, they'll still be disciples telling us that the the philosophy has finally come into fruition like it did at Barca and Bayern.

He's struggling, and one who thinks rationally can see that. Its not just that we didnt beat Palace, but for the majority of his tenure here all we have seen is dour football.

Then your problems are greater than just memory.

It's not his job. He isn't the manager and he can't go around publicly undermining them by deciding he's going to manage them from the touch lines.

It annoys me that he seems to permanently have a look of utter confusion on his face during the game.

 FS, put away your handbag.

Your point makes no sense. He's not allowed to say anything to the players?! Pretty sure Ferguson's coaches did all the time.

We horrendous against lower sides absolutely horrendous. Why does he not emphasize moving the ball quicker. I'm angry.

Ok. You came along with the confrontational posting not me. Why would he have done it as the manager and not as assistant if it isn't how he wants to do things? Perhaps Alex Ferguson had a slightly more democratic approach.

"We have to finish our chances"

What fecking chances?
It's getting a bit too much this, hard to keep the patience at the minute.

Well that was terrible and another worrying aspect of our play is that, for a 'possession' team, we have huge trouble staying on the ball when a team really has a go at us and we need to calm things down. Saw this against Palace in the first ten minutes and in the second half, that first half against Arsenal and the latter parts of the match against Wolfsburg. We ein the possession stats when a team decides to let us have the ball...
Now even if we want to play attacking football we lack the flair, pace and power in the squad to do that effectively and that's before contending with Rooney.
We are on course for a top four finish but the reality is that we aren't winning the title. In this context I'd be very tempted to sack him now so that at least his successor can prepare for the January window and bring in the players we need. We aren't going anywhere with this guy and we shouldn't just write off the season this early.

If you can only see in LVG's head. You'd see the philosophy in full effect. You'd see the football how it's meant to be played. Too bad no one understands poor van Gaal. No one's intelligent enough for his football.

I wouldn't worry about that. They'll disappear after a while. At least it was that way in the Bayern boards. All his disciples predicted in 2011 that the club will regret kicking van Gaal out and that we won't ever be successful in Europe with Heynckes. They vanished soon enough.

There was a lot more talk about van Gaal's influence in Bayern's treble on the Caf the last 18 months than between Bayern fans over the last 4 years.

Don't buy that in it's entirety. If Giggs doesn't like what he sees and given his position (assistant manager) is quite high up - we should be hearing murmurs about disagreements between the two (behind the scenes).

If Giggs is just sitting there seething but not actually saying anything, well then he's not likely to be a good manager at all in my view.

Especially if he got an assistant, who then fancied the job himself.

What the hell has possession got to do with it. It chances created that matter.

We don't press high and pen other teams back in the way Bayern Munich and Barcelona do. We're awful to watch, and the results aren't good enough for the money that's been spent. I can't mention Wayne Rooney without feeling my blood pressure rise so I'll just say what I'd like to see happen once again: do a deal with Guardiola now and give him whatever he needs to bring in the players he needs in the summer. Van Gaal is clearly not the right man to bring us back to the top; he's not even the right one to make us play attractive football. We either act now or we fall behind City and Arsenal.

LVG is going nowhere.

done everything asked of him so far and his aim for this season is for utd to compete on all major fronts, you just have to take it.

I'm trying to stay positive. In terms of points we are doing relatively well.

Unfortunately, Liverpool are only 4 points behind us and have had arguably more difficult fixtures than us - they have already played nearly all quality teams away from home.

Our style of play isn't good enough. It doesn't correspond to our history. Identity matters.

We have weird fans here. Amazingly they are still Moyes apologists on this very site. But I live in hope and hope that the same will happen with us.

As for the CAF obsession with his influence on your treble, it only started after he was named manager here. Hardly anyone here credited him with that success before he became manager. I've been telling anyone that will listen that Jupp is the man that should be getting the overwhelming majority of the credit, and that United will only be successful in future post Van Gaal if we actually get a world class manager. Just like Barca had with Guardiola and you guys with Jupp. Not because the philosophy has finally come into fruition.

Shove your possession up your arse Louie. Look at how clueless we were in the final third instead.

Look at the lack of players getting into the box. Running beyond a man. Movement off the ball is none existent. Fullbacks that are complete shite in attack. No one can cross a football. Useless from set pieces. Pathetic and minimal counter attacks. A Lack of pace. A complete has been up front. All chronic issues.

I suspect posters have mentioned this already but I can't be bothered to check.
If Mourinho is sacked, would you like him to replace LvG?

His double standards in terms of dropping players really annoys me.

If a defender has one poor game they sometimes don't get a look in for 3 or 4 games.

Herrera and Mats have also suffered a lot from having one underpar performance and then not featuring.

But Rooney. That's three 0-0s on the trot. If you don't react after that it's negligent.

No. We already have a pragmatic, defensive minded manager in charge. We need an attacking minded manager.

Anyone else think he genuinely doesn't have a clue what's happening on the pitch?

Its like he has a set of rules/instructions and just follows them blindly ignoring anything happening out on the football pitch. Philosophy.

Biggest disappointment about him is how he was made to be a tough man with big balls in terms of making decisions.

You really want rid of Rooney, don't you? Me, too.:(
