Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

He put in one great cross today apart from that did nothing of note.

He regularly cut right through the Spanish midfield with quality control, taking two or three players out in one movement and finding attacking players in good positions.

The end of the game the entire croatian team was knackersd, they were toe to toe with Spain for most of the match before about the 70th minute, when they basically ran out of gas and could do nothing but defend. They had quite a few openings in attack led by modric as well.

Not sure having 28% of the ball is really going toe to toe with them. But Spain were clearly happy to pass the ball around and do very little with it.

What he did tonight was help relieve the pressure on the croat team.

He managed to ride 2/3 challenges when he had the ball, and keep the ball moving forward.

Okay I may have exaggerated , but what I meant was they did exceptionally well to close down Spain, who barely had any chances. Croatia had the better chances before Spain's goal, and I don't think they were to content to do that because it would have left them in 2nd place.

I thought he looked superb, as usual for Croatia. I could envision him absolutely running the show here, but just can't see us splashing out on him. Would be the perfect signing though.

Great players can be quiet in a match and still come up with a match winning pass or goal. That should have happened today, because that cross to Rakitic was world class. There was one brilliant instance in the centre circle where he wriggled through 3 players before laying it off.

 it was indeed.

I'm beginning to think Modric is too 'safe' an option for Fergie. We all know he loves a gamble, and Modric just seems too sensible.

There's definitely a stubborn streak that runs deep in the boss these days. I can see him signing an unknown just to try and prove he doesn't need to pay top dollar for an established, so-painfully-perfect-it's-criminal type players.

Modric proves why even mourinhio wants him (rumours), just what we need amazing player could see him, kagawa, rooney and our wingers after winning the ball; having quick incisive counter attacks that absolutely rip the opposition team apart, if it was not for the shit finishing of croatia, they could have knocked the world champion out.

Considering he had little or no support throughout the game I thought he did very well to pick his moments, create a wonderful chance and show some neat touches throughout the match.

Put Xavi with so little support and with defensive work to do I doubt if he would have given one of his better performances, my point is that a midfielder of the ilk of Modric/Xavi need support to be completely effective and dominate like one sees deep lying midfielders do.

Context is necessary when gauging any performance.

I hope he feels Modric is too perfect to miss out on though ..

Modric for 25-30 mil would be a prefect midfield signing for us.

But I am not sure we should sign a Modric like player or M'Villa type player

So in summary, you're not sure we should make a perfect midfield signing ?

"For me", he would be the perfect signing as I like the Carrick -Scholes kind of partnership.

But in today's game I am not sure that is the way to play.

Incredible yesterday against the best midfield in world football.

Exactly - if he'd swapped places with Xavi, we'd all be hailing him as the best midfielder in the world, whilst Xavi would have resembled Jordan Henderson

Was great yesterday. How ever after that cross he seemed to disapear from the game. Last 15 minutes he was just walking everywhere, poor touches and some poor passes. One Croatian attack, he was just sat on the half way line a few yards infront of his center backs.

May of been injury or a stich as he was holding his side. Maybe just out of puff after the shift he put in.

I'd love to sign modric for a reasonable fee but if for some reason this summer we can only sign one midfielder then unless fletcher is guaranteed to be back then I don't think we can afford not to sign another defensively solid player there. No point having a modric if you only have one player, carrick, giving him a platform to work on, if carrick gets injured then our midfield is very exposed and modric isn't gonna plug the hole. Ideally we could sign two, but with the numbers we have I can't see that.

Bilic has apprently said he wants to play in Spain and is close to agreeing a move.

Is Modric a left footer? Dont know why but I always thought he was.

Yep, he's just like Valencia.

Odd that he hit the cross in the Croatia game with the outside of his right boot. A typically one footed manoeuvre... Maybe he was just being cheeky..

OK, I'm not sure what's going on here but he's clearly right footed.

I'm not sure if you're both wrong or if Sharky's post has broken my sarcasm detector.

He's clearly a perfect fit for the midfield and better than anything we have, but Sir Alex operates in his own little mystery world when it comes to that midfield so I doubt he'll even bother. He probably thinks Cleverley is better than him or something.

Yep, he's just like Valencia.

No he can use his left foot way better than Valencia.

That cross was brilliant because no one was expecting it. You'd naturally think he would cross with the left foot from that position, but hitting it with the outside like that gives the element of surprise.

Anyway, I don't think he was exceptional at the Euros, but that's because he doesn't have those around him to let him play his game to the level he can. If he comes to United he will be even better than at Spurs, which is pretty damn good it has to be said.

'I'm always right' made a rather comment which was lost on everyone.

He's left footed like Valencia; i.e. he's right footed.
Shouldn't have to be spelt out
:/

I appreciate your comment, righty.

Modric is the best midfielder to replace Scholes that we can buy now, or in this time period. (Next 2-3 years, previous 2-3 years).

However, we need another deep lying playmaker in the mould of carrick, who can be a good shield to the defence (NOT a DM like De Jong) as well as passing the ball with great efficiency, and being able to ping the long balls occasionally. Someone who'll have over 85~% passing (Carrick has 90%). Keep it simple lots of the time, but with great precision and ease, but able to play the long ball on occasion.

Modric would be the 'partner' for this defensively-sound deep lying playmaker; the Scholes to the Carrick, the man whose main duty is to sit deep and ping the balls with ease. And be able to dribble and get forward in our midfield 3 (Kagawa as the CAM with lesser defensive duty, and the season why the 'new' scholes wouldn't have to constantly sit deep; having 3 midfielders gives ALL of them a bit more license to move forward as the other 1-2 can cover for them when this happens).
