Rajagopal: Tough for Malaysia to give their best again
By ERIC SAMUEL
PETALING JAYA: Having given their all in the 2-3 defeat by Manchester United in the first friendly on Saturday, national coach K. Rajagopal knows it won’t be easy for his boys to raise their game a second time at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil today.
In the first friendly, Malaysia nearly shocked the Red Devils in front of a sellout 85,000 crowd when they held the English Premier League champions 2-2 for 84 minutes before new signing Michael Owen scored the winner.
Malaysia’s Mohd Amri Yahyah, especially, can hold his head high after scoring a brace, including the spectacular volley which caught United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar by surprise in the first-half stoppage time.
But Rajagopal is not getting carried away with the result and he is aware that United will probably step up a gear in the return match today.
“It will be a different ball game tomorrow (today),” Rajagopal said before putting his charges through a light workout at the Wisma FAM ground in Kelana Jaya yesterday.
He said Malaysia would be hard-pressed to repeat the same performance as the players had given everything they had against United on Saturday.
“We did not expect the re-match but it is a bonus for the players to get a second shot at United. Naturally, after a hard game the players are bound to be suffering from knocks and bruises.
“I will have to look at the physiotherapist’s report on the players’ condition before deciding on the team and our game plan. Anyway, I don’t intend to make too many changes,” said Rajagopal, who was pleased to hear Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson praising Malaysia for their spirited performance.
Rajagopal, however, was disturbed to hear some quarters and fans demanding much more from his young team.
“I have had this team for barely 10 days compared to United, whose players have been together for years. How do they expect us to play like United. If our players make a stray pass, the fans start to jeer us.
“All I ask is for them to be patient. These boys need all the encouragement they can get. We are in the process of team rebuilding.”
He also called on the fans to support the national team, saying he was surprised to see the fans silenced when Amri equalised for Malaysia in the 51st minute.
“By right, the fans should be rooting for us,” said Rajagopal.
United, meanwhile, are expected to include Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher in today’s game, having sat out the first match.
