Manchester City 17/18 discussion | "If you're here for the Champions clap your hands" (#6505)

Poorish showing today and injuries are mounting up, we could well be heading to Anfield without KDB, David Silva, Mendy, Kompany and Jesus.

Thought Palace were worth their point even though we were the better side. They really bottled 2 great chances at the end.
That tackle on KDB was horrid and I can't believe the ref only gave a yellow for it but something like that has been coming, Kane, Alli, the one of Gundogan vs Newcastle and now this. Refs been allowing far too many leg breakers against us and letting players off and it's finally happened. Pep should be furious.

Sane swollowed Ian Dowie. It's frightening.

Oh dear, very sorry. Never mind

I think Aguero, Sane, and KdB all had off performances today. Aguero alone wasted chances to win two close games, or prevented them with his decision making in the build-up. The latter also goes for KdB today, especially thinking of that one counter near the end, where he ignored Sane's pointing for the pass until it was too late. Nevertheless, Sane probably wouldn't have made something from it today either.

See you can also say, refs been allowing us to continue with cheap, snide fouls and little trips and letting players off. Pep should be embarassed that his side's are known for their petulance. Aguero and Otamendi (the one who got krav maga'd by Lingard), should be up for an oscar/bafta.

Let's not call them Man City.

Better name for the club is Oil City or Abu-Dhabi United.

Where do you expect a club like this to be when they are funded by a corrupt Middle Eastern state with unlimited funds?

Money talks, if you have ever been to Qatar, Abu Dhabi, or any of these rich oil states you will know their solution to every desire is to throw money at it until it is a success.

Man City, PSG and other clubs purchased are a vehicle for these states to promote their ideology and values, Man City are (one of many) tools for them to survive once the oil runs out so they are diversifying their assets.

Problem is other clubs cannot compete with these lot because they do not have money at the same level.

Leicester were an anomaly, Chelsea, United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham are all doing great given the limited funds we have compared to these lot.

Just a shame Premier League or UEFA or FIFA have a foresight on what these state owned clubs are planning to do to football. And it will be too late before they do anything meaningful. Every sanction by the bodies will be bypassed by these lot because they have unlimited funds to find the best lawyers etc to find holes in the rules to keep their dominance.

Round and round we go.

It feels like the Arsenal invincible season in truth. Blatant decisions against them going in their favour, late goals scored due to defensive howlers and opposition teams missing sitters at the vital time.

In any normal situation even given their great performances they'd be 8 points worse off at this stage. Still comfortably leading the league but with one eye over their shoulder.

The only saving grace is that if this does last the entire season then probability would have them

I absolutely hate city. But it hasn't been all that easy for them. Did you not watch the game today and see the penalty they conceded after the 90th minute? Or some of the dirty tackles KDB and Sterling have received this year that have avoided reds? Or even Walker getting a red card for virtually nothing against Everton that cost them 3 points?

I'll give sh*t to city any chance I get but I won't be calling them favoured.

Careful , sound factual reasoning, can get you banned from the forum.

Ask didsbury Dan, padr81 and a host of other decent city posters recently, who when finally pushed into textually retaliating against a few seemingly protected posters, had the coup-de-grace applied... rather than the causer of the text retaliation being warned/dealt with.... but alas you can’t as they are now banned.

But it’s nice to hear a clearly ardent noncity fan, point out some real facts about City, on this thread.

In-depth analysis of Manchester City under Pep Guardiola this season :

''When Guardiola arrived in England in the summer of 2016, the usual and, quite frankly, unjustified doubts whether he could reproduce the success he had on mainland Europe were spread. There are still those who believe the Premier League is a unique fortress one cannot conquer as easily as La Liga, Serie A or Bundesliga. Guardiola, however, has remained unfazed by doubters and habitual nay-sayers who may accuse the admirers of the Catalan coach of being short-sighted tactic hipsters. In fact, anyone who questions the general quality of Guardiola is short of any substantial argument, unless they want to criticise him for investing a lot of money in a league where even those who battle relegation spend heavily.

While analysing the City team and how they work under the guidance of Guardiola, it became crystal clear how the 46-year-old adjusted to the players available and the tactical habits the team had before he arrived. He did not just turn everything upside down and create a new City side in a vacuum. Instead, Guardiola came up with a different concept than he had used at Barcelona and Bayern, without betraying his footballing principles.

Outside of Guardiola’s accomplishments, several City players have shown how they are world-class in regards to their technical and tactical abilities. De Bruyne and Silva may be those who shine the most, but who would have thought that Delph, Walker or Sané could fill out the roles Guardiola gave them. Just like he transformed David Alaba and Rafinha into versatile defenders who now can easily play in the middle of the back line, he has managed to use their skills and repackage them. It would not be possible without coach Guardiola as it would not be possible without the right players willing to learn and evolve. No one ever questioned they did not have the talent. But talent alone does not make you superior in today’s football.''

What a load of absolute waffle.

Who could have know that Sane, the precocious attacking talent signed for nearly £50m in a pre-Neymar market, a player who had already lit up the German league, could go on to play in his natural position?

Or that attacking fullback Kyle Walker, with 7+ years of Premier League experience under his belt, who had just come on leaps and bounds under Pochettino last season and earned a £50m transfer fee could go on to play really well in an attacking fullback role.

Only Pep Guardiola could have foreseen and managed these cosmic events.

Delph is the only one of those three who can earn any additional kudos beyond “manager gets beat out of players” but it’s not a new phenomenon getting a midfielder to do a job at fullback. Valencia, Young and Milner have shown in the last few seasons that it’s not a completely alien role. It’s made a damn sight easier when the other ten players on the field completely dominate the opponent.

The amount of sycophantic shite that gets written about Guardiola is nauseating.

This is what £50 million gets you in the football world these days, a heavy touch, no control and unable to play the simplest of pass backs.

No value in the market indeed.

Still the best RB in the league and one of the best in Europe. That's 50m well spent :D

Well why aren’t we getting a similar tune from Martial or Rashford?. Who many here including myself rate as a equal prospects to Sane. The player has to have adequate ability but there’s no doubt guardiola is a big reason for giving Sane the perfect platform on which to perform. I do agree that people are going way over the top in there praise. But Guardiola being praised for the players performing at this higher than normal level is justified.

Ive heard bout this so called "inflation" in the football world, but 50 million seems steep for a ball boy, does he track back?

He seems to have trouble tracking the direction of a football when it's moving in a straight line, based on that knowledge I feel it's safe to assume that tracking back is a step beyond his capabilities.

Calling him a ballboy is a little harsh, though. Kyle Walker is a moderately competent right-back. He just hates children.

Aguero looks finished. Nowhere near good enough to lead the line in a game of that magnitude today. Jesus was a big miss for City today with his energy and intelligent pressing. You can see why Sanchez appeals to Guardiola so much.

Not only the pressing. When he went out wide there was a moment that City had an overload and he could have played a quick one two and been one vs one with the full back iirc. HE is just too brain dead. City press with 9 and half players when he plays and his off the ball movement is terrible for the team. That's why he is benched in ALL City's big games. He is okay agianst the scrubs. If Jesus doesn't come back for the DL City aren't even gonna reach the cl sf.

Pep will be straight to Alexis's agent after this.

The greatest collapse in the history of the game is well and truly on the cards.

Are the resident City fans feeling a little anxious right now?

God, glad this talk of invincible and greatest team of the whole universe is over. one of the arguments was they are invincible. eben if it's at the hands of liverpool.

Great result, but not many can say they didn't see this coming. City aren't actually as good as people think, and I'd confident in saying had Mane not been sent off in the reverse fixture that they might have already been beaten. Late goals flattered them, I wonder if they're gonna collapse now? Would take a monumental effort to throw such a lead away but it's been done before. If United get Sanchez then things are gonna get interesting and it looks like you guys are nailed on for it now.

Bizarre thing is how many people were tipping them to go undefeated and acting like it was more likely than not. Incredble run, but in football you need as much fortune as skill to go a 38 game season without defeat. In football, being the better team on paper counts for far less than other sports, e.g. rugby union, because games are low scoring and a goal can occur due to fortune and circumstance as much as skill.

Not even a little bit. In fact probably more confident. Last season we'd have buckled and lost 5 or 6-1. this time we showed a bit of courage despite playing poorly.

Stones form since return is a concern, as was Ederson today but thats it.

If we finish January with 2 wins over Newcastle and West Brom (both at home) this will be forgotten about. Honestly not worried about a collapse at all. Losing finally may either be the kick up the arse to get us back to earlier season levels or the monkey off our backs that saw us play at a lower standard as the run went on and on.

All in all only 7 points dropped this season from 69. We're still currently on course for over 100 points.
