Manchester United vs. Bayern Munich

If Nani and Valencia play well and track back when needed then I think this is where we will win the game, if they're off form by any means then we can kiss it goodbye because we have feck all coming through the centre midfield at the moment.

Sir Alex Ferguson says he will not risk Wayne Rooney against Bayern Munich on Wednesday night, despite admitting that the striker would be at his most pursuasive for a place on the bench.

Rooney injured his ankle in last week's quarter-final first leg defeat at the Allianz Arena and sat out United's Barclays Premier League clash against Chelsea on the weekend. Media reports suggested he may make a quicker-than-expected recovery and run out against the Germans at Old Trafford, or at least be named on the bench, but Sir Alex quashed those rumours at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

Rooney has made "good progress" and the boss praised the medical staff's "fantastic" work, but he said he would not risk the 24-year-old so soon after suffering ligament damage. The soonest fans can expect to see Wayne in action again is likely to be against Blackburn Rovers on Sunday, perhaps as a substitute.

Asked if Rooney had a chance of being involved on Wednesday, he said: "No. We have made some good progress with the lad. The medical team have done some fantastic work, but I'm not prepared to take a risk on a player that's not 100 per cent fit. We're looking more at the Manchester City game, or maybe Blackburn as a sub. The boy is making good progress, but it's an ankle injury. It's no different to any other ankle injury. I can't take a risk."

However, having ruled it out altogether, Sir Alex seemingly left the door slightly ajar when asked if Rooney even possibly make the bench. "I don't think so, no," he said. "He'll maybe talk me into it. But, no, it's a difficult one." That remark may well be analysed in the press, but it seems that if progress to the semi-finals is to be achieved then the Reds will have to do it without the prolific no.10.

So, Rooney will probably talk SAF into putting him on the bench. There's no harm in that.
SAF says he will not risk him, which means that he already made up his mind on the team and has a plan. Good

We played Bayern in a 4-4-2 for the Audi Cup.
It was

Van der Sar
Fletcher Ferdinand Evans Evra
Nani Gibson Scholes Giggs
Berbatov Owen

4-4-2 is the way to go fellas. Macheda upfront. Everyone else is sort of a given

Isn't Owen out for the season?

If we dont win tomorrow, it could be the first time in what five years now that an English team wont make the semi finals of the UCL.

...and the first time since 2004 there hasn't been an English team in the final?

2009 us
2008 us and Chav$
2007 Dippers

Wow im nervous about this one. A win and our season comes back to life with one of two french sides in the way of a potentially great final v Barcelone/Inter. If we lose or draw that could be the death of our season, finishing off a terrible week for the team. ANd Munich, while a good side hugely underestimated by the media before last week, are still no match for us if we play well. I think thats what makes me so nervy, that we really do have it in us to go through so it will be such a shame if we dont. park, nani and carrick are massive tomorrow,if they turn up they are fantastic if not they are unbelievably shite. presuming they have the balls to show up for such a big game id go:

VDS

RAFAEL
VIDIC
FERDINAND
EVRA

VALENCIA
CARRICK/giggs if in shape
FLETCHER
PARK
NANI

BERBATOV

united 2-0!

Bayern are favourites to progress on Betfair. We were between 1.6 and 1.8 to qualify after the 2-1 loss but I think we've drifted since the Chelsea game. Still pretty close with Bayern 1.94 and United 2.04 to go through.

Not feeling good about this game at all. I can see us scoring one, maybe 2. But I can also see them getting a couple.

2-2 :nervous:

We just need to cut out the errors. Rafael should start at RB and our defence should be able to cope with what they throw at us. They created chances last week but couldn't take any until we gifted them two goals. We have enough in attack to score a few past them. First goal is key though.

We need a good defensive performance, that's all. If we can keep a clean sheet then I'm positive we'll be able to nick one. Trouble will begin if we concede.

That's why I'd still play Carrick in front of defence with Scholes and Fletcher in front of him, and count on all of them doing well. We definitely need Nani on one wing as he's currently our only offensive player capable of creating something, with Valencia on the other one probably. Berbatov up front is the only option really.

I think Ferguson is going to play Park though.

A lot rests on Berbatov and what tactics Fergie decides on that effect his positioning and play. Hopefully he'll get the support from the midfield he desperately needs (which could mean Giggs playing in the hole). I'd rather Berbs in the hole with Kiko as front man tho.

we are out

"It's been an eventful first half at Old Trafford, over to (...) who is reporting."

"Yep. End to end stuff here and the half time whistle has just gone. United took the lead, but the Germans got themselves back into it and then managed to bag the lead just before half time. Fergie looks fuming, but I'm sure he'll get a response from them in the second half..."

Have some faith son!

What's wrong with it?

It does look fine except I really don't think it is a smart move to play Giggs behind Berbatov. Giggs hasn't have had the best form of late and I rather stick both Macheda and the Tov up there are pray to god one of them can find the back of the net. Berbatov was good against Bolton as a sole striker but let's be honest with ourselves, he really isn't too much of a threat against bigger teams.

It is kind of risky playing a 4-4-2 in such conditions but I really can't see things working out for us should we play Giggs in the hole. We have to utilize both our wingers and maximize the pitch. We've been passing around the ball helplessly and the physical Germans just run the balls down.

Macheda has been out for a long time, he isn't fit to start considering his only matchtime has been in his last two sub-appearances vs. Bolton and the renties.

have been positive before mate. lets see if this works ;)

VDS
Rafael Rio Vidic Evra
Valencia Fletcher Carrick Nani
Macheda Berbatov

Rooney to come on in the 2nd half if necessary

Pretty positive we will see:

VDS
Rafael, Vidic, Rio, Evra
Fletcher Carrick
Valencia Giggs Nani
Berba

I would be really surprised if SAF starts Macheda alongside Berba. He will keep him as the impact sub and play him depending on the way the match is developing.
Strong defense and a creative midfield will win us this match.

This.

We're at home, we've looked utterly toothless in our last two matches, let's just fecking play our way and 'ave it.

Berbatov as a lone striker is a waste of time.

On Match of the Day last weekend they pointed out his unwillingness to drag defenders around out of position the way that Rooney does.

I also think that the last game against Chelsea drastically showed up the fact that time is very much catching up with Scholes and Giggs. :(

Maybe Berbatov watched it aswell and learned a trick or two ?

:smirk:

I'd never write Scholesy off and Giggsy improved in the second half. Worth remembering he's only just back after a lay off, he'll still have plenty to give once he hits form again.

this man knows what he is talking about, we will see this team... hopefully! the support for berbatov is key, as is possesion, which goes without saying. If carrick and fletcher have a good game, it will set the tone for the team and we will win.

very uneasy about this one, which is a bit unusual pour moi - these bastards just have a knack of toughing out a result

big performance from crowd and team req'd

Once Giggs position had changed for the third time, into a central midfielder in that game, I thought he looked class.
