Manchester United vs. FC Basel

After the disappointment of last night, this cant come soon enough

-----------Linde
Val---Jones---Evans--Fabio
-------Carrick-Fletch
Park------------------Giggs
-----Welbeck-Berbatov

3 point is a must since we are at home, we really need one of evans/smalling to be fit....

Welbeck and Berbatov should have enough to beat Basel and Norwich.....

might be wise to not rush with Hernandez - dead leg is a couple of days

Tuesday: Basel have hit a fine vein of form with three straight wins and 10 goals without reply in their last two matches.
Thorsten Fink, who was in the Bayern Munich team in the 1999 final, is building a promising reputation since succeeding Christian Gross two years ago.
The veteran strike partnership of Alexander Frei and Marco Streller remains prolific, but it is in Xherdan Shaqiri, the hard-shooting 19-year-old winger, that United face their biggest threat.

Anyone who thinks this is going to be a walk in the park might be in for a shock, as someone said previously, its not the Carling Cup and it needs to be taken seriously...

--------------------De Gea-----------------
-----Fabio----Carrick----Jones---Evra-------
-----Park-----Fletcher----Giggs---Welbeck--
--------------Macheda-----Owen-----------

Subs: Amos, Ferdinand, Anderson, Young, Valencia, Diouf, Pogba

de Gea
Fábio Ferdinand Jones Evra
Nani Fletcher Anderson Young
Berbatov
Owen

Lindegaard; Valencia, Carrick, Giggs, Park; Diouf, Welbeck

Norwich after this then an international break. See no reason to rest too many, go for it with a strong side and win. After a draw I think we'll want to get straight back into the form we had before that and score a good few goals. Honestly thinking 3-0+ here and on the weekend. Especially if Rooney is back for Norwich.

At the start of the season our squad seemed huge with tremendous depth, now we seem to be running out of options in every position...

I guess that's what 8 or 9 injuries does to your squad.

Also intrigued to see Xherdan Shaqiri performs.

Strongest team possible, get a decent victory going into next weekend and mark our authority on the group.

Got a feeling Rooney won't make this. Berbatov and Welbeck upfront I reckon.

I know but I just doubt Rio will be risked.

we'll have to see. We're given so much misinformation these days. Sir Alex likes to play games with us poor supporters :)

I'm surprised at the weaker lineups people want us to field....Zekkie Fryers?!

We're playing the Swiss champions, not Leeds United.

I don't think people are being disrespectful or taking the game for granted. It's more to do with our options at the back. If there's no Smalling, Vidic or Evans then that only leaves Rio and Jones. I'd be surprised if Rio plays considering he's only just back from a calf problem.

The only way I can see that happening is if Fergie is confident 1 of the other central defenders will be back to face Norwich on Saturday.

---------------------------Lindegaard-----------------------

--Fabio----------------Rio--------Jones------------Evra---

----Park------------Fletcher--------Anderson------Giggs---

--------------------Berbatov----Wellbeck-----------------

Subs: De Gea, Smalling, Evans, Nani, Macheda, Young, Diouf
Prediction:3-1 Berbatov, Park, Anderson
Think our wingers need a break. Young looked jaded and tired against Stoke. Must be the England internationals. Time for Park to stake his claims for first team football.

Team should be...

GK: Lindegaard

RB: Valencia
CB: Ferdinand
CB: Jones
LB: Fabio

RM: Nani
CM: Fletcher
CM: Giggs
LM: Park

CF: Berbatov
CF: Welbeck

Subs: De Gea, Fryers, Anderson, Young, Diouf, Owen, Macheda

Fancy Welbeck to score in a utd win

Smalling, Evans and Vida didn't train today. Neither did Hernandez and Cleverley. However, Carrick did. It's safe to assume that Carrick will start at the back.

The following 19 players are training: De Gea, Lindegaard, Evra, Jones, Ferdinand, Fabio, Fletcher, Park, Nani, Anderson, Young, Valencia, Giggs, Carrick, Owen, Berbatov, Welbeck, Macheda and Diouf.

The injured players we knew about last week - Vidic, Cleverley, Rafael, Gibson and Smalling - were joined by weekend casualties Evans, Hernandez, Rooney in not participating in the session. Hopefully Sir Alex will give us an update on some or all of them when he holds his press conference at Old Trafford this afternoon at 14:00 BST.

They are managed by Mr Fink, part of Bayerns 99 team that we beat, and they're 01 team that beat us

Back 5 should be:

de Gea
Fabio Ferdinand Jones Evra

I think Evra needs a little break especially after getting a knock in the Stoke game and had to battle through it. Fabio at left back, Jones at right back and Carrick to partner Rio should see us fine

I have a feeling Rooney is going to be out for quite a while. He usually takes a long time to recover when he suffers a hamstring

I agree, it would be good to give Evra a rest tomorrow night, given he did get a knock at the weekend, and it means he'd be fresher for Norwich this weekend. But with the injuries in defence, I wouldn't be surprised if Evra plays.

If he does indeed get rested, then we could see:

Valencia, Rio, Jones, Fabio.

I dont think Welbeck will start I dont think hes fully match fit best to ease him in.

Play Berba at the back he's pretty good at slowing down attacks.
:p

(joke)

our defence have really been fecked also not good to see rooney and hernandez out too. :(

The good thing is that Shaqiri (the best player by far) and Huggel (important for their DM) will not be able to play.

Lindegaard, Fabio, Rio, Jones, Evra, Valencia, Giggs, Carrick, Park, Welbeck, Berbatov

Just read this on the manutd.com forum

"l'm a FC Basel fan and Man Utd will smash them into pieces at Old Trafford... my prediction is 5:0 (okay, without Rooney maybe 3:0, lol) Basel is playing without its entire middlefield. Stocker/Yapi are injured and Huggel/Shaqiri are suspended. And Basel is dependent on 19 year old Shaqiri, not so much because of his goals, but of his pace and creativity. Without him = no crossings/passings from the right side. Basel without Shaqiri is a lame duck"

Very good time to play Basel it seem.
