Manchester United vs. FC Basel

Did not know we are going to be missing eight senior players for this game.

Who are the eight?

1) Rafael
2) Evans
3) Smalling
4) Vidic
5) Rooney
6)
7)
8)

Ah yeh forgot about Chico and Clev. Not sure if Gibbo even counts as a player never mind a senior 1 though!

So Berbatov to finally get a CL start.Hope he's shaken of some of that rust.

de Gea, Lindegaard, Amos
Fabio, Ferdinand, Jones, Evra, Fryers
Valencia, Carrick, Nani, Young, Giggs, Park, Fletcher, Anderson
Berbatov, Owen, Welbeck, Diouf, Macheda

Thinking they'll all go, bolded players will make the 18.

Carrick/Fletcher
Giggs/Anderson
Welbeck/Owen

They're the decisions I'm thinking are somewhat difficult to make.

Really hope Berbatov has a good game and scores.

I would go with this as well. Evra might need a rest so don't be surprised to see Fabio there instead, and Valencia (who definitely needs games) at right back.

Who the feck is Fryers?

Ezekiel Fryers - Official Manchester United Website

Fryers hasn't been registered for Europe unless he was registered in the last few days the only defender from the reserves registered is Sean mcginty

Well he says there's going to be some rotation ... that would probably mean Carrick, Giggs and Welbeck.

I think McGinty will make the bench, and possibly Macheda too, as a couple of senior players ... e.g. Nani are given a rest.

He counts, he helped United make the final last year and will probably get a runout in the winter fixture pileup, so watch your tongue!!! :nono:

He is, I was rather surprised to see it at the time.

The United squad on UEFA.com includes 10 names on 'Player list B' which is for younger squad members - others eligible for this list can be added up to 24 hours before a fixture.

Goalkeepers: David De Gea, Tomasz Kuszczak, Anders Lindegaard, Ben Amos*, Sam Johnstone*.

Defenders: Patrice Evra, Phil Jones, Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling, Nemanja Vidic, Fabio*, Rafael*, Sean McGinty*.

Midfielders: Anderson, Ryan Giggs, Ji-sung Park, Michael Carrick, Nani, Ashley Young, Tom Cleverley, Darren Fletcher, Antonio Valencia, Darron Gibson, Matty James*, Davide Petrucci*.

Forwards: Michael Owen, Dimitar Berbatov, Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez, Danny Welbeck*, Federico Macheda*, Mame Biram Diouf, Will Keane*.

I'd play:

...................De Gea.............
Fabio...Ferdinand...Jones...Evra
Nani....Carrick....Anderson...Park
..............Young...................
...................Welbeck.............

I'm not a fan of Young in the middle.

yip, ahead of Pogba.

How does it work with kids in Europe? I was always lead to believe if they were under a certain age they didn't need registering.

Do the likes of Pogba even need to be registered?

Just read Fergie talking about Fryers again, and talked about him being a LB.
How good are the Basel wingers? :nervous:

Ferguson in an interview

"The Champions League is the best competition in the world right now, better than the World Cup, better than the European Championships, it is a fantastic tournament," he said.

"But it's not a golden period for us because we have lost two finals, so I don't think it can be called a golden period.

"We have been consistent in the Champions League, our form away from home has been outstanding and we hope we can do better this year and win it, that's the aim for this club all the time."

Bit surprising, I think the consensus on the forum is that we've done very well in Europe in the past 3 years.

Pogba wasn't even B-listed, he's ineligible.

He's only 18 so can be added anytime, no?

Don't think he was officially registered with united until october 2009 because of the argument with le havre and to be registered on the b list you have to have been with the club for a minimum of 2 years as far as I know

Bench: Lindegaard, Fletcher, Anderson, Valencia, Nani, Owen, Macheda

Prediction: 2-0 (Berbatov, Welbeck)

Just read this on the manutd.com forum

"l'm a FC Basel fan and Man Utd will smash them into pieces at Old Trafford... my prediction is 5:0 (okay, without Rooney maybe 3:0, lol) Basel is playing without its entire middlefield. Stocker/Yapi are injured and Huggel/Shaqiri are suspended. And Basel is dependent on 19 year old Shaqiri, not so much because of his goals, but of his pace and creativity. Without him = no crossings/passings from the right side. Basel without Shaqiri is a lame duck"

Very good time to play Basel it seem.
Good news for us, espcially no Shaqiri for Basle is really a massive blow for them.

Post 93

If Lindegaard doesn't start (and is fully fit) I'll eat my hat and post the video on RedCafe.

Were at home. We have injuries in defence midfield and attack but Basel don't have their entire first choice midfield.

We will win and Berba is way overdue a goal. I think it will be a boring game both idea being disjointed.

Ando: We need three points

Anderson admits United need to win against Basel this evening.

The Reds welcome Champions League football back to Old Trafford and the Swiss side top Group C following their 2-1 win against Otelul Galati.

Sir Alex's side know three points are expected and the Brazilian feels an early goal would help make things more comfortable for United.

"We have to win against Basel on Tuesday," he told ManUtd.com. "It’s important we pick up our first three points and get to the top of the group because you never know what can happen in the Champions League. Tonight is our first home game in front of the fans and we need to win it.

"I don’t know a lot about Basel but if a team is in the Champions League that means they have quality. No matter who you play, you always have to do your job and everyone has to play well.

"It would be nice to score early. That always helps. We must do our best and make sure we win the game."

I don't think I could watch a game on TV3. They have the sort of coverage you'd stereotypically associate with a third world country.

It worse than that. Third world countrys don’t have to listen to Tony Cascarino's analysis
