Manchester United vs. FC Basel

Yes, keep them coming people. You're all doing fantastically well. Fecking lynch mob all itching to get a dig in and show the rest which side they're on with pointless posts. That too is pathetic if you ask me, but as Pogue will surely tell you all again, correctly I might add, nobody asked me.

I maintain that it's a fair point. I'm not worried about us not winning, it's a very strong team, I'm saying others could use game time more than some of the ones who are playing. If Berba and Owen really are pooped after finally playing some football again then perhaps they need to reconsider their training regime.

But hey, any criticism of SAF (in some cases, any criticism of anything regarding the club) is usually met with facepalms and other 'clever' posts on here.

How come Ferguson has no issues with slinging two up front against the likes of Chelsea, but shits himself when it comes to CL group stage games against the likes of Basle and Bursaspor, despite at the same time always resting our most in form players?

Another tedious momentum stopping 1-0 win/0-0 draw coming up then.

That team is brimming with pace, movement, and ability.

I won't be surprised if we rout them.

It's like he's deliberately trying to make the CL group games as shit as possible.

What is this obsession with playing two up front? We played 4-4-2 at Stoke - it was a great game, wasn't it? What an attacking performance.

Compare it to, I don't know, the home game against Schalke from last season.

Two strikers don't guarantee good, fluid attacking football - accurate passing and attacking mentality do that.

Man Utd v Basel line-ups
Man Utd: De Gea, Rafael Da Silva, Jones, Ferdinand, Evra, Anderson, Carrick, Giggs, Valencia, Welbeck, Young. Subs: Lindegaard, Owen, Berbatov, Park, Nani, Fletcher, Diouf.
Basel: Sommer, Steinhofer, Abraham, Dragovic, Park, Fabian Frei, Cabral, Zoua, Granit Xhaka, Alexander Frei, Streller. Subs: Colomba, Ajeti, Schurpf, Chipperfield, Taulant Xhaka, Kovac, Pak.
Referee: Paolo Tagliavento (Italy)

How many titles does Fergie need to win and how many CL finals does he have to reach for people to stop whining? How many times did his selection actually harm us in a big way?
This team is more than good enough to win a home game against Basel.

For those of you saying play 2 strikers, are you sure Berbatov + Welbeck would work better than Young-Giggs-Welbeck?

I don't think he has shat himself, I think he sees more movement in Young Welbeck and Giggs than if we play Berbatov and Owen up front (for instance) and I agree.

Anderson, Valencia, Fabio, Evra and Jones will all get forward.

I'm looking forward to this more now I've seen the team.

I remember people saying the same thing before the Rangers game.

We never "rout" anyone when we make major changes to the system and personel at the same time. We just play like shite and usually end up drawing or nicking a barely deserved win.

Basle are going to have to be hilariously crap for us to trounce them. In fact, last year, Bursaspor were hilariously crap, and it still ended up being a dodgy 1-0.

Deary me, someones overtired ......

Enjoy the game ;)

Like who?

Owen and Berbatov both played at the weekend as well as against Leeds. Welbeck is only just back from injury.

Anderson and Young for example.

I've no problem with Welbeck playing, I'm looking forward to seeing him.

4-0. Nowt wrong with that team. Welbeck and Young will interchange on the left nicely, Giggs will support up front with Carrick, protecting the back 4 and Ando bossing the middle. Valencia and Rafa will be deadly on the right.

Gonna walk it.

Valencia and Young are more conventional wingers than front 3 attackers.

Valencia's played that role a fair bit in the past when Rooney was lone striker.

But they players out mean it will be a fairly fluid team, with lots of movement and changing positions.

We could even see Giggs - Welbeck - Young.

It's definitely not a 4-5-1, however.

I never get people going nuts over team selections. This is what SAF does for a living... While you look at the last game and this one and maybe the next one, SAF is a grandmaster, thinking way further ahead. He also sees how people are doing in training, how's sharp and who's not, etc... I get being surprised when we field a team that's actually a bit odd, like the carling cup last week (strange because of positions and Fryers came out of nowhere), but this team is simply 11 internationals, all playing in their favoured position probably.

this be a big test for the likes of welbeck, jones and young, they never played on the european big stage at home.

Er, the game at Stoke was a great game, unless you look at it purely from the how well United played perspective, in which case it was still hardly disastrous...and I'll take 5 excellent performances and one ok one to the dross we serve up in the CL group games anyday.

Changing your personel and formation at the same time more or less guarantees disjointedness and very little fluidity.

When was the last time we played well in the CL group stages? We were good away at Valencia last season, but it was a soul destroyingly negative performance. Other than that I think you have to go back to about 2008

He does this with every single CL group game. Changes half the players, leaves one or two key men out, and switches to 4-3-3. It's not a one off...and we all end up having this same debate every single time too. As if it's never happened before and never will again.

I think it's mostly to get everyone some time in it (433) for the later stages. It's the only good explanation.

Could anyone be kind enough to point me in the direction of a decent stream/list of streams in the shape of a PM?

Why do people consider a 4-5-1 negative/defensive? it really is not. decent team. would have liked to see berba in there because welbeck isnt suited to playing the lone man up front imo. not with valencia instead of nani on the right. we'l still win this by a couple of goals though.
