Can this be true?
MANCHESTER UNITED are again sweating on the fitness of Wayne Rooney just 24 hours before their first Premier League game of the season.
The Daily Star Sunday can reveal that Rooney, hit by foot and knee injuries at the end of last season, left Wembley last Wednesday night with a tight hamstring.
If United had started their season yesterday, the England striker (below) would have been doubtful to play.
But with United’s opening match against Newcastle delayed until tomorrow night, they are hopeful he will be available.
One player definitely out is Rio Ferdinand, who is still recovering from the knee injury which kept him out of the World Cup.
Ferdinand is unlikely to be fit until the middle of next month at the earliest.
That means the £30million central defender will again be missing when England launch their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign.
Fabio Capello’s men have matches against Bulgaria and Switzerland at the beginning of next month.
