Manchester United vs. Newcastle United

I imagine we'll line up as:

VDS
O'Shea Vidic Evans Fabio
Valencia Fletcher Scholes Nani
Berbatov Rooney

3-0. Rooney x 2, Hernandez.

A promoted team in the first game of the new season, the mother of all banana skins.

4-0

Why wouldn't Scholes start this one? I think Nani looks like his fitness level is not quite there yet. Therefore I say Giggs on the left instead of Nani, Scholes in the middle.
Also, how did Rooney look midweek? He hasn't had a full preseason. I would even consider Owen-Berba. Both rested and looked sharp. My only concern is how would Rooney take it

For some strange reason Fergie keeps Paul Scholes for away games, the games apparently where you need tacklers in midfield. I've nothing against Paul Scholes merely acknowledging this phenomenom.

You seem to be with me in almost everything else, but you only emphasis why Rooney needs more playing time even if it means he's not at the buisness end of things.

Playing Scholes in away games makes sense from the side that you need someone to dictate play and maintain possession. When away - teams are little better defensively and perhaps Scholes passing works to help open up the defenses as well.

Am still trying to find the article where Scholes spoke last year where he said boss like to keep him for away/home games - not sure which one it was. Thought it was away but, still wanted to make sure.

I know it's probably a good thing in terms of getting players fit but I resent having to wait until Monday for our season to begin.

Even if it helps Rafael, Hernandez and Park making the squad?

Hernandez to score 3 if he starts imo. He is going to be electric.

Given the performances in pre-season I think they should be coming in with a lot of optimism - we've generally underperformed and they've done very well, the result against Deportivo was excellent and the draw against PSV was very decent - but I think it'll be quite comfortable in all honesty.

The first team has players like Harper, Colocinni, Nolan, Guthrie, Barton, Gutierrez and Caroll who should be quite comfortable in this league throughout the season, but even then they're bottom 10 quality really. There's no real creativity or thrust from the impact players nor is there any real quality in defence, so it'll be a struggle if there are a few injuries for any length I think.

The fullbacks in particular look lacking in quality to me, and Valencia's excellent at isolating his fullback and terrorising him while Nani should have an easy time against Perch(inexperienced) or Simpson/Taylor(positionally indisciplined). Wouldn't be surprised to see our strikers get a couple of goals from crosses.

In the middle I think Smith and Guthrie will give Carrick/Scholes a much harder time in the middle than they had last weekend, I'm assuming it'll be Carrick-Fletcher, and Nolan will undoubtedly come back to help so I don't think we'll see total dominance. I think we'll see a lot of meaningful possession though, quick forward passes that matter.

Defensively I think we'll have a lot of mini-battles between Vidic-Caroll(which we won't find a walk in the park) and Evra-Routledge/Gutierrez(depending on the flow of the game with Spiderman doing a lot more work going backwards if switched there) which'll be of interest but really I think it'll be quite a dull game with lots of valiant fighting but us eventually winning by a couple of goals.

We defo got the hardest relegation team come up. They'll be full of confidence. Don't want to get too cocky because these games have kinda spanned out into 0-0s or 1-0s for us recently bar Fulham 5-1 but I hope we can bag a 3-0 win with Hernandez getting the last. Seems probable.

The last time I visited OT we got a draw against these bastards. They deserve a thumping because of that.

I know Monday kick off is good for the squad but its bloody annoying for me. I want to see United this weekend dammit. How much more am I suppose to wait.

With you on that one mate, sick of having to wait. Watching Chelsea on MOTD a bit ago bang in six was so annoying bearing this in mind.

Scholesy and most likely giggsy wont being playing home games, at least not as much as before. Their experience will be kept for away games. Cleverley was a star in the championship last year, and should know exactly what newcastle are about having faced them recently and probably keeping up with their results and what not. Would be a decent opportunity to play him i reckon.

Wayne rooney fitness in doubt by united

Can this be true? :(

MANCHESTER UNITED are again sweating on the fitness of Wayne Rooney just 24 hours before their first Premier League game of the season.

The Daily Star Sunday can reveal that Rooney, hit by foot and knee injuries at the end of last season, left Wembley last Wednesday night with a tight hamstring.

If United had started their season yesterday, the England striker (below) would have been doubtful to play.

But with United’s opening match against Newcastle delayed until tomorrow night, they are hopeful he will be available.

One player definitely out is Rio Ferdinand, who is still recovering from the knee injury which kept him out of the World Cup.

Ferdinand is unlikely to be fit until the middle of next month at the earliest.

That means the £30million central defender will again be missing when England launch their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign.

Fabio Capello’s men have matches against Bulgaria and Switzerland at the beginning of next month.

Yea just read this?! :(

I think we are well stocked in the striker department, such that we can do without Rooney for the odd game. Valencia is in fine form also, so opportunities to score should be plenty.

Given its at home, and first game, id rather we do not rush Rooney back if hes not 100% as I think Berbarito would be a good partnership to start off with and more than adequate enough to get goals in Rooneys absence. Something we possibly would have struggled with last year as was the case near the end of the season.

feck me, bring on a proper football match with a proper football team. Hate waiting until Monday night.

This is like waiting for Christmas as a kid, then being told you can't get your presents until Boxing Day.

Seconded, its torture having too wait till a monday night

Come on lads, we have Berbs/Owen/Hernandez/Macheda. Rooney can have his deserved rest.

Berbs-Owen and after 60 minutes if things don't work out let's unleash Chichagoal !!!!
I'd even have Chicharito before Owen in the pecking order, RTD#7. He could really bring out the best of Berbatov.

Evra should be starting tomorrow. Fabio is with the reserves in Ireland today.
