A few things to take into consideration..

Smalling and Ferdinand fitness. Smalling came on against Benfica and looked fine, so might well start. Ferdinand has played four in a row I believe? I still reckon he should play alongside Vidic though as Newcastle have been great this season - he can miss the Palace game obviously. Fletcher and Carrick played against Benfica, Carrick was awesome and Fletcher was decent enough. I'd be happy with both playing again, but I wouldn't be surprised if Giggs replaces one of them. I'm again unsure if Young and Nani will be asked to start again after their injury and internationals respectively, but again their rest should come by missing the mid-week cup-tie. Then as for strikers, Berbatov had a good game but if Rooney is fit I think he'll have to make do with the bench again. If Welbeck is fit he may well make the squad as well, but I'd prefer him to be drafted back in against Palace too (along with the likes of Lindegaard, Rafael, Evans if fit, Fábio, and Gibson. With Valencia, Berbatov, and Park starting as well).

Man City have a tough game away to Liverpool. City have been somewhat lacklustre in away games after their Champions League games (2-2 with Fulham, 2-3 against QPR) so this maybe a game where they slip up. If we win and they don't, it'll bring back a lot of confidence to everyone (players and fans).

After the better performance midweek I am actually more hopeful of more than one goal this time. Team on the assumption Rooney is still unfit:-

We will need to play fast tempo football against the Geordies to break them down as they are well organised and well set up. But we are more than capable of this and I think a 2-0 win.
 
We haven't won at Old Trafford since 1972. A draw would be a massive bonus. I never really expect anything from games against you but then Norwich, Basel etc have given you decent games recently so you never know.

I don't see why this would mean the wheels are coming off as such, we're just having the two most difficult games of the season back to back. Every team in the league expects to lose these two fixtures.

Wheels come off is a bit steep... but having an unbeaten run behind you is bound to give you some additional motivation/belief then without it. A collegue of mine at work said he'd be happy just with a single point from the games against City, United and Chelsea... and it's hard to argue with that really.

I fancy another 1-0 in our favour... it won't be overly exciting stuff...

It could easily see the wheels come off. Whilst you're going unbeaten you feel unbeatable. You build up momentum and everyone is buzzing. All it takes is a few defeats for everything to go tits up. I've read enough football auto bios to know it and they all say the same thing.

Should we beat you lot then it will be a good test of Pardew's man management skills to get them back on track.

I see where you're coming from but not sure I agree. Nobody expected us to be top 7 so if we do lose a few games and drop down to mid-table then nobody would be too shocked. I actually don't think it's possible for the 'wheels to come off' as such, we could go slightly better than relegation form for the rest of the season and still finish around where we did last year. The wheels could come off our title challenge I guess ;)

Not having a go at you in particular mate but reading stuff in the press it's as if we've done something wrong by racking up so many points early.

Eh? Surely losing a few games on the spin would be the "wheels coming off". It has nothing to do with your projected league finish, it's about your form.

EDIT: Or at least that's how I interpret that particular phrase.

Anyone know of any decent streaming sites? Reason being is myp2p is dead and our shitty work machines won't allow us to install Sopcast :(

I'm wondering whether we shouldn't be more inclined to put Smalling in with Vidic instead.

I love Rio but has he still got it like he used to or is a case of once he gets in the grove with Vidic again it will all click back into place defensively?
 
Ferdinand is still a very good defender IMO and should be played with Vidic. Their experience is vital.
 
I'd go with the same defence as Plan M.

Would be better to start Smalling on the bench as he's been out for a month now and better give him more training before starting. Palace on wednesday is a good chance to give him 90 mins.
Jones has played a lot of football recently, but he will get a weeks rest from matches after tomorrow.

Anyway, difficult choices in defende now with Rafael back as well, which is great to have that kind of competition for places.
