Manchester United vs Real Madrid

I don't get why everyone's shocked Giggs is starting, it was obvious as feck once he wasn't involved on Saturday. SAF has a sense of occasion.

Rooney has just come back from a short layoff and played 90 minutes a few days ago. A storm in a teacup this. He'll come on in the second half. He'll be disappointed because he always wants to play, but he'll understand the managers reckoning. Nothing to see here.

Yeah but Rooney is important for us to have some control over the middle and spread the ball to our forwards. I hope we dont suffer in those areas

As journo just pointed out: Left out Becks in 2003, left out RVN in 2006 Carling Cup final, leaves out Rooney in 2013...

So? There are plenty of players he's left out in similar situations that have stayed. Not to mention the RVN one was a completely different situation.

why the feck wouldn't you start Rooney?
I'd even "get it" if it was to keep him fresh, but he's the last person on the entire pitch who you'd say didn't have enough energy to keep going for the entire game.

Even if this is fergie's plan I don't like it one bit at the moment.
Rooney's a game-maker not a game-changer.
Hernandez is the kind of player you put on when you need a goal, Rooney's the type of player you play all the time if available.

On the plus side:

Kagawa, Rooney, Hernandez

If you need some goals, not bad options off the bench are they.

LOL. At least Mourinho will be surprised, he sure as hell can't have expected this.

fecking hell. Cannot believe that selection.

Rooney not starting is Bizzare. I wonder what the plans are for Ronaldo and the right side with Nani and Rafael on that side.

Strange. Hopefully won't come back to bite us in the ass.

Kagawa, Rooney, Hernandez

Yep. Our bench is very attacking.

Giggs to give the ball away at every fecking opportunity? No Evans baffles me more tbh.

He's hardly been doing that recently has he? Consistently very good for at least three months.

Still would have had him behind Rooney or Kagawa in a game of this magnitude. That's what strange, how he has suddently leapt ahead of a bona fide star player and someone who scored a hat-trick on the weekend. Giggs is still a potential match winner but I wish he was on the bench against the best unless injuries dictate otherwise.

I've been angry at Ferguson's team selections before, but tonight I'm just bemused.

WHAT THE feck?!

Massive gamble.

Do people seriously believe that Rooney is going to leave just because Fergie didn't let him start a game?

It's the only logical scenario.

City will come back and win the league this season and buy Rooney off us for about 17 million.

If it can still go either way around the hour mark, having Rooney come on is a massive boost. I hope we don't have to sub him on to rescue us though...

Erm, what the feck?

Mind boggling that, Rooney has been in top form lately and not only are we missing his goal threat but also his work rate. Kagawa after scoring a hat-trick at weekend should have started aswell.

Class fecking lineup, what's wrong with some people here? Absolute nuts some of you.

World class striker, Giggs on his special occasion, Welbeck arguably the MOTM in the first leg, Nani with a chance to finally stamp his mark on the biggest occasion and the brilliant Vidic back alongside Rio. Rooney, Kagawa, Young, Hernandez all on the bench...imagine needing a goal with thirty minutes left and we've got that talent to change the game.

Have some fecking faith lads.

Real Madrid:

Diego López

Fábio Coentrão
Varane
Ramos
Arbeloa

Khedira
Xabi Alonso

Di María
Özil
Ronaldo

Higuaín

SUBS: Adán, Pepe, Albiol, Kaká, Modrić, José Callejón, Benzema.

A big, big shock - but sort of understandable given that Rooney is not at his best at the moment.

Big fan of Vidic, Nani and Cleverley playing especially. Still very excited, bring it on!

I wonder what Jose makes of it? Surely this gives Madrid a boost not seeing Rooney start?

One thing is for sure. Madrid are likely as gobsmacked as everyone else.

Not like their game plan will be in tatters, but they've definitely got something to play on their minds as the game develops.

I think this is going to prove a masterstroke by SAF. Probably should've left out RVP too. That would've kept Madrid guessing.

feck me, people are making it like no one's ever been fecking dropped before. I don't get it but Rooney's a team player, nothing to see here.

Ferguson has balls of steel. Still can't believe this.

There defense is little above average.

Bale in OT, sign him up

In almost every category I can think of, today's Rooney is better than today's Ryan Giggs. And that includes big game mentality, sense of occasion and all that.

I don't doubt Giggs will give his all, but there's no way he has the legs for this match. Shock early prediction, Giggs to expose the back 4 by mis-playing a penetrating pass and not getting back to cover.

I hope Giggsy has a good 1000th appearance but I fear a backlash at full time. He's been used in exactly the right way recently. All evidence points to this being the wrong way.

I expected some form of unpredictability but feck me this is insane. Let's just hope the big man is crystal clear about his ideas and tactics. Every time i question his decisions, hindsight makes me look like a real bitch. Hopefully we pull this through.

So we can play 4231 in Madrid but need a midfield 3 in Manchester?

Guess SAF is playing for the clean sheet. Still, Giggs is a real shocker.

If you want a clean sheet you play Rooney over Giggs. He's better in possession, works harder and is far more mobile.

I can't help but think its a bit of sentiment. Giggs 1000th game, just like he has done for over two decades he wants him to write another chapter in a great story.
